#NixOS 24.05 branch-off happened. Snuck in a small reformat of the python packages at the last minute.

https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/313628

Currently, evaluations are running, nixos-24.05-small has already completed eval and is building.

https://hydra.nixos.org/jobset/nixos/release-24.05-small

It will be mostly cached from nixos-unstable-small anyway, so its channel should be available within the next two hours.

@sandro The churn of individual commits doing reformatting of single packages frankly pisses me off. It consumes too much bandwidth and I wanted that to end.

There is never a good time to do it, but this was the best time to do it.

I have no regret for making this choice.

The uplifting feeling when you improve the performance of your program and realize that the only reason stuff had been working until now were inefficiencies which prevented race conditions …

Happy new year, everyone!

Same as last year, let me point out the particulate matter () that we see in the city center of due to the use of pyrotechnics.

Thanks, but no, thanks. I don't need any of that.

PM10 levels from 20:00 until 2:00 over New Years. Normal levels barely register, due to the spikes around 0:00, that peak above 700 µg/m³.

Anyone?

22.11 ("Raccon") has reached it's end of life with the beginning of July 2023. That means there will be no further support for it.

If you haven't already, consider upgrading to NixOS 23.05 ("Stoat") at your earliest convenience.

NixOS has one config file, can roll back changes, and keeps package dependencies separated for each app

This is quite an interesting Linux distro that has been around longer than Ubuntu, but does require some learning of their package management system in the command line interface i.e. not really for beginners.

The single config file gives you the ability t ...continues

@danie10 Nix indeed has started before Ubuntu, but Debian on which Ubuntu is based again is much older than Nix.

And the distro was formed around nixpkgs. NixOS had its first release in 2013, see https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/blob/master/nixos/doc/manual/release-notes/rl-1310.section.md.

Yep IPv6 only would be such a great idea, because I totally want to cycle through my home network wifi because it randomly decides to drop IPv6 if it didn't happen to see the route advertisement in time.

Android has such great IPv6 support, we should all be happy that such great opinionated visionaries have control over its network stack!

@flameeyes

Android stops responding to MLD queries while asleep and as such drops out of the NDP group, which in turn breaks IPv6 connectivity.

Reported in 2019, I even submitted a report from my Pixel 3a at the time, but it went nowhere.

#NixOS 23.05 is around the corner.

But first we start a three week bugsquashing effort called "Zero" Hydra Failures.

Check https://zh.fail/ for failed builds and submit PRs to fix things or mark them broken, if they are unfixable. Then tag them with "ZHF #230712" so we can prioritize reviews and merges.

Super useful CLI idea:

I want bash scripts, but with conveniences and lightweight dependencies that can be inlined.

Imagine a "direnv-like" standard library of functions, alongside the ability to fetch-if-not-installed certain binaries, and maybe even a super simple module system.

Then, you bake the script, and it becomes a single file bash script.

To be clear, I want to write it in bash, and have it turn into "bash that I can curl".
