"The Kent State shootings were the killing of four and wounding of nine unarmed college students by the Ohio National Guard on the Kent State University campus. The shootings took place on May 4, 1970, during a rally opposing the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War into Cambodia by United States military forces as well as protesting the National Guard presence on campus and the draft."
Apparently the humanitarian workers of World Central Kitchen who were killed in Gaza this past night were not hit by just one strike, but rather a series of three drone strikes over the course of multiple minutes.
Christopher Lockyear, Secretary General of Doctors without Borders addressed the UN Security Council yesterday. Among his points:
"Children who survive this war will not only bear the visible wounds of traumatic injuries but the invisible ones too—those of repeated displacement, constant fear, and witnessing family members literally dismembered before their eyes. These psychological injuries have led children as young as five to tell us they would prefer to die."
The conservative death toll count for Gaza stands at over 28.000 (of Gaza's total population of ~2.3 mio) in the past 4 months.
A majority of the population of Gaza has fled their homes, is suffering shortages of food, water and medical services. Many have lived in temporary shelters for months. Of those, 1.5 mio are said to currently shelter in the Rafah area.
Imagining larger scale military operations in that area is disturbing, to say the least.
@hko I think you’re missing my point, which was that quoting numbers released by Hamas, regardless of how accurate they ultimately are or aren’t, without mentioning at all that it includes a large percentage of militants, makes it appear like they are civilian deaths (which is what Hamas ultimately wants since it itself is not reporting militant deaths).
> "[..] The report noted, 'This is the highest share of people facing high levels of acute food insecurity' ever recorded 'for any given area or country.' [..]"
> "Gaza needs more food coming in. On a good day, aid groups are bringing in maybe twenty-five to thirty per cent of what they need. [..]"
@hko Being subject to state violence is almost a necessary component of the definition of a marginalized group, and high on the list of what the dominant group(s) wants to happen.
Only the means and whether people dare cheer out loud differ.
