"The Kent State shootings were the killing of four and wounding of nine unarmed college students by the Ohio National Guard on the Kent State University campus. The shootings took place on May 4, 1970, during a rally opposing the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War into Cambodia by United States military forces as well as protesting the National Guard presence on campus and the draft."
@larsmb .. which reminds me that I want to figure out if, and which variant of 3M 6000 series "Half Facepiece Respirators" I might want to try. I'm considering exploring those for longer transit times.
If you have experience with those, I'd love to hear any input and thoughts (also from anyone else, of course)!
Loved watching Christiane Amanpour growing up. But she got this all wrong. Brutal erasure to say that there are no independent journos in Gaza (because ๐ต๐ธ journalists apparently can't be independent).
The Middle East Eye (this clip is their's btw) & Al Jazeera have award winning teams in Gaza composed of locals closer to the story than any westerner could be. But go ahead & waltz into Gaza, claim to be the eyes/ears of the world while totally lost without the Palestinian fixers flanking you.
I love how Google Maps's search just ignores your search criteria for places (such as, say, restaurant rankings) when it decides you really should be shown more matches, instead of just the 1-2 matches that actually fit your search.
How can a company whose entire fucking business model was built on fucking search fuck up so bad
Apparently the humanitarian workers of World Central Kitchen who were killed in Gaza this past night were not hit by just one strike, but rather a series of three drone strikes over the course of multiple minutes.
World Central Kitchen is devastated to confirm seven members of our team have been killed in an IDF strike in Gaza.

Despite coordinating movements with the IDF, the convoy was hit

This is not only an attack against WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organizations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war. This is unforgivable

The seven killed are from Australia, Poland, UK, US, Canada, and Palestine.
How many more blatant atrocities will the US shrug off, while we continue to ship weapons to the perpetrators?
(And yes, I know the atrocities being committed against the Palestinian people are orders of magnitude greater than one strike against a humanitarian aid convoy, but itโs blindingly obvious the US govโt doesnโt give half a shit about Palestinian lives.) https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral/112200175765614232
@mivox Speaking of shrugging, I was amazed this morning to see how eager the German press is to frame Iran's complaints about attacks on their embassy in Syria as unreasonable (and kind-of hostile).
Apparently this news medium didn't find it worth pointing out that attacking embassies is a bit irregular.
My #Dad, aged 27, at #RefugeeCamp in #Indonesia - 1979. Photo was taken by humanitarian aid workers to help #VietnamWar#refugees get sponsored to go to Europe, Canada, USA & Australia, under asylum.
My Dad passed away June 9, 2023.
He went through hell & back, several times. He beat almost all odds. Until #covid infection in hospital in 2022. #LongCovid killed him last year.
@msquebanh I'm shocked to learn that your dad's passing was caused by Covid.
I've been in angry disbelief for the last almost 4 years, about the almost uniformly destructive global handling of the pandemic (I remain in relatively serious social distancing mode, myself).
I am sorry for your loss, either way. But it feels extra unfair that Covid was a big factor :(
I'm looking at these 1979 photos of both of you. They are very evocative. Thank you for sharing.
@larsmb fair. i don't share that tradeoff, but there are certainly different reasonable tradeoffs to be made.
(fwiw: while i believe we're on the same page that blockchain stuff is a net detriment to the world, i don't consider boycotting anyone who interacts with it a top priority.
there are many vile things in the world, and boycotting blockchain-association is not at the top of my list.
no ethical consumption under capitalism.)
