For any in doubt about the paramount importance of secure communications,
here is an example of how MI5 was used to glean encapsulated financial records of UK unions,
which had significant effects during a pivital phase in UK politics:

Its worth pointing out that during this period of time Thatcher was buying masses of coal from Soviet states to undermine the local strikers.
Politics, eh?

What was the most distressing thing about today?

Trying to sign up for newsletter, to then realize that this necessitated the use of Google's captcha service.

:(

thenexusofprivacy,

@indieterminacy yeah, the state government's voter information portal uses Google's captcha service. Distressing indeed.

@indieterminacy you know when it was late 2020 I had a feeling it might be 2023, or even 2025 before the pandemic would pass.

I did wonder if I was being pessimistic. Now I kinda feel I was being optimistic.

There's a lot of folks on here will totally feel like the person in the cartoon.

We're sheltering in place, and at times feeling utterly abandoned. Sunaks policy was utter greed.

@indieterminacy But if folks are curious as to how you could ensure your fellow folks with might not feel so abandoned, perhaps take some time to read the Open letter here :

Thanks to @antiaall3s and @MediaActivist and other folks for writing the open letter.

@janneke You may appreciate a breakdown of Ken Thompson's in/famous compiler backdoor, which he alluded to in his famous lecture, Reflections On Trusting Trust:
https://research.swtch.com/nih

c/o https://irreal.org/blog/?p=11754

Like others, Im surprised that nobody has asked him sooner to look at the backdoor (99 LOC and 20 LOC script).

@indieterminacy Yes, that was an interesting read.
Also, quite encouraging that is finally gaining some influence, and similarly discouraging that and the full-source Bootstrap isn't widely known about.

I guess calling Michael Gove a wanker for liberal reasons makes me an extremist:

> Government officials have drawn up deeply controversial proposals to broaden the definition of extremism to include anyone who “undermines” the country’s institutions and its values,
> ...
> The documents state: “Extremism is the promotion or advancement of any ideology which aims to overturn or undermine the UK’s system of parliamentary democracy, its institutions and values.”

> Nearly half (44 per cent) of the 845 workers interviewed as part of the inspections raised welfare issues including racism, wage theft and threats of being sent back home.
> On most of the inspected farms, there were allegations of mistreatment or discrimination and more than 80 per cent of workers interviewed on the three most complained about farms raised an issue of some sort.
