Russia declines UN request for aid access to areas flooded by Ukraine dam breach, leaving tens of thousands of people without access to piped water (web.archive.org)

A senior United Nations relief official said that Russia has so far declined requests to help residents of Russian-controlled areas of southern Ukraine impacted by the breach of the Kakhkova dam.

The problem isn't the Russian government; this brutality and callousness has been going on for hundreds of years. The problem is Russian culture that keeps producing these governments

Yeah they generally seemed very chill, but I wouldn't want to be on the business end of a walrus with a chip on its shoulder

Heh yeah I think it's superior to Space Karen

I still think your linework is really great 😅 Using a calligraphy brush is probably a big part of that since I'd figure it gives you more control over line thickness

This might be more at home over on https://beehaw.org/c/creative. Gorgeous picture in any case, I especially like the colors.

Unfortunately renewables won't quite get us there, because many of them have seasonal outputs and we don't have any good ways of storing energy on a large scale. Wind, solar etc. can't produce energy 24/7, and when there's overproduction we can't store it anywhere. There's some interesting solutions like this Finnish company working on a sand battery but nothing that's good to go right now.

Right now nuclear energy is the only good solution. I'd bet on small-scale modular reactors, at least if we can collectively get over the irrational fears many have about anything nuclear.

Yeah the amount of light you get around NY / Montreal feels pretty ideal. I love long summer nights but this is just ridiculous. My poor brain needs some darkness too

The Lemmy User Experience is Better When Centralized into Fewer Instances

Most people access the Fediverse through one of the large instances: lemmy.world, kbin, or beehaw. New or small instances of Lemmy have no content by default, and can most easily get content by linking to larger Lemmy instances. This is done manually one "Community" at a time (I spent 15 minutes doing this yesterday). Meanwhile,...

I've understood that the problem with Lemmy's moderation tooling right now is that if an instance has a lot of problematic users, the only way to handle that is to totally defederate.

Eg. the possibility of blanket blocking all users from instance X from commenting on instance Y without taking away instance Y users' ability to interact with communities on X would be useful. I've understood that Mastodon has something like this nowadays.

Ooo I didn't know there's a new Wes Anderson movie out there. May have to (gasp) go to an actual cinema for that

I think that Cloudflare problem was fixed recently, since now I can see kbin.social stuff on Beehaw's front page when browsing All, eg. https://beehaw.org/c/fediverse@kbin.social

Couldn't have happened to a nicer species.

My only saving grace is that I'm middle aged and don't have all that much life left in front of me due to rapidly failing health. And if things do get bad enough during my lifetime, I'll simply kill myself – my tolerance for extra bullshit at this point is essentially zero, and having to endure climate disaster bullshit caused by the pig-headed idiocy of other people is out of the question.

I really wouldn’t tell anyone to rely on ChatGPT for technical support. It’s fine if you already sort of know what you’re doing, but it has a tendency to “lie” very convincingly and come up with either broken or even potentially harmful solutions

What game is improved the most by mods?

I know most of the Bethesda RPGs have massive mod support, and there's games like Minecraft that have more mods than anyone can imagine. I would consider those games pretty playable in their vanilla states. Would you say there are any games that were "saved" by modding? Or that are still kept alive by thriving modding...

Ah I haven't seen it, I never really got into Twitter
