Ik gaf een lezing voor een zaal vol ingenieurs van Capgemini en kreeg als bedankje o.a. een heuptasje.

Dat is het verrassendste sprekersbedankje in tijden. (De brandblusser bij een congres van brandschade-experts staat ook zeker in mijn top 3)

Last week I joked that I would wear my glitter jumpsuit to today’s class on statistics. Students told me I should.

Today the students snuck into the lecture room early to decorate it with glittery garlands, showed up wearing glitter outfits and brought baked goods. And then we discussed p-values. ✨

Best day of teaching. Ever.

Hebben jullie nog tips voor leuke Duitstalige podcasts? Liever niet over nieuws of wetenschap. Mijn lievelings is 1000 erste dates, maar een Duitse versie van Sara's Mysteries of Reply All zou heel fijn zijn. (Ik zet deze oproep hieronder ook in het Duits, ter boosting naar Duitse netwerken.)

This interesting piece, "How less-gendered language is faring across Europe," introduced a term from German I haven't heard before: the gender star.

It goes after the stem and before the suffix. For example, a male citizen is a Bürger, a female citizen a Bürgerin, and the gender-neutral form is "Bürger*innen."

It's not at all a settled form yet, and there's also the "gender gap" form that uses an underscore, "Bürger_innen," and some people just write "BürgerInnen."
