im a developer, hacker, game modder, VR enthusiast, & i make silly programs for old tech. level 5 ghidra mage. least annoying macos user

big fan of the powerpc architecture and tinkering with platforms that run it (wii, xbox 360, old macs). i am very silly but i post about the nerd stuff i get up to as well. im not perfect, but trying to be better.

i play fortnite and rock band and other video games too, and i post cringe about them. i also love music.

don't be weird around me or my friends, thank you

There is an ongoing spam attack on the fediverse for the last couple of days. It's more widespread than before, as attackers are targeting smaller servers to create accounts. Before, usually only mastodon.social was targeted and our team could take care of it. For server administrators out there: If you don't need open registrations, switch over to approval mode. If you do, blocking disposable e-mail providers is a massive stopgap to the problem. Mastodon also supports hCaptcha.

@ipg@wetdry.world avatar

@Gargron will there be at least discussions on improving the moderation capabilities in Mastodon so server admins (both victims and passer-bys) can more easily manage these attacks?

so misskey.io announced they're introducing a temporary measure against the spambots by ignoring all posts, boosts, replies and whatnot from other instances, UNLESS a user from a different instance is followed by someone on misskey.io

if you wanna maintain communication with misskey.io's users you should make an account from there and follow your main that is on another instance (the announcement itself recommends this method)

boost to let as many people know or something

ipg,
@ipg@wetdry.world avatar

@driftini this isn't even the worst solution i've seen to the problem, in fact it's one of the better ideas i've seen
especially considering mkio is the target of the spammers and a temporary "lockdown mode" would basically stomp out all spam at little cost

i'm followed by people who actually work at companies whos products i reverse engineer, i'd like to think it's like being on watch and theyve got a phone on speed dial for like "She knows too much." and having hounds sent to my house

some of you sponsorblock mfs need to realise that maybe marking a content warning disclosure isnt the brightest idea

ipg,
@ipg@wetdry.world avatar

@vozercozer @mae i don't think it's that stupid - it's a single slide that acts as disclosure everything you need to know, it's not a sponsor spot selling you the product at that time

(also yes children in their teenage years are in fact able to comprehend topics of mental health)

y'know i'm convinced the microsoft surface's red "secure boot off" banner is just there to annoy people using operating systems other than windows. by the time you see the banner it's already too late to turn the computer off before it starts executing the 👻 non microsoft-signed code!!! oooo! 👻 (unless your battery is so degraded or just gone making unplugging it shut down)

ipg,
@ipg@wetdry.world avatar

@thememesniper i think its there the same reason bootloader unlock screens are there: to warn you that Things Might Not Be Right in the case of an evil maid attack

(also several linux distros are allowed secure boot so any conspiracy about "just to annoy non-windows users" is out the window)

it should go without saying but please don't buy games on key reseller websites, just pirate the games if you can't or don't want to buy it on Steam/Itch/GOG/whatever.
indie developers would prefer you do that than support people making money by frauding them (from "im a reviewer, give me code!" to worse things like refund scamming or credit card fraud, that leaves the dev worse off)

constantly capturing all the network traffic happening on my Windows 11 PC with a bunch of game launchers and anticheats installed is so boring. from the way you people talk it sounds like i have every single website i visit logged on 80 company datacenters but nah its just. @DenJohn very aware of this fact, i'm not really defending that part of kernel level anticheat (though i will stand by "if a well-designed well-behaved anti-cheat needs kernel anti cheat, i won't be mad", just most aren't)

look at how many times BEDaisy (BattlEye) and MHYProt (genshin's anticheat) have been blacklisted in Windows because of security flaws, it's definitely a problem to let anyone run around in the kernel... but that's a wider problem with Windows rather than solely anti-cheat
