Your sibling wants to start coding. What programming language would you recommend?
0. C

  1. JavaScript
  2. Java
  3. Python
  4. Something else
ithron,

@nixCraft I think the lang that fits the application best. If they want to do eg. game programming with unity C# would probably the best. For embedded probably some kind of C. Maybe lua and get into some modding? Definitely depends on the motivation. I think learning any lang works best if you have a direct application in mind.
Probably also depends on the background. If they like math, functional langs maybe great.

The Programmers' Credo, via the ineffable pinboard, Maciej Ceglowsi. Yes I had this bronzed myself. Twice, one for me, one for him. And we deserve every bit of it! 😉

ithron,

@codinghorror Hell, yeah!
Just like the method that I came up with in my PhD thesis. After my first paper I thought "yeah, easy, this can be implemented in 3 months at the most"... 3 years later it's finally working... somewhat…

According to iPhone users, once you switch to the iPhone, there's no going back to Android.

Is it true? 🤔

ithron,

@nixCraft tried Android two times. However, both were crappy devices. A 80€ tablet, actually unusable slow despite its 12 core CPU, unable to install anything despite external SD card.
The other was some low priced refurbed smart phone. Also not usable.
But I don’t blame Android for it, but for me as a iPhone user it’s hard to know I’m advance which Android devices are legit and which are crap.

Alright and nerds, what shell do you (primarily) use ?

ithron,

@nixCraft primary zsh for years now. Before tcsh, probably because it was the default shell…

Poll: Favourite C compiler for and :

ithron,

@nixCraft I actually use clang on all platforms — Linux, Unix, macOS and even Windows. At least in FreeBSD and macOS/Darwin it’s the default compiler. VisualStudio also ships with a clang onboard. But using clang on Linux can sometimes be a bit frustrating…

Hello Mastodon, could you suggest a computer game suitable for kids aged 10 to 14 that can run on older hardware? Thank you.
