Hello Mastodon, could you suggest a computer game suitable for kids aged 10 to 14 that can run on older hardware? Thank you.

@nixCraft Minetest is the one I used with my kids, runs very well and entertainment is unlimited. You can also host a small server for kids to play with friends.

I did this and still host a server. The code is here if useful: github.com/ronoaldo/mercurio

siedlerchr,

@nixCraft for the younger kids check out Roblox - it's web-based and has a variety of games built on the platform, and allows your kids to design their own games.

You also may want to check out games that run on Valve's Source Engine - they were built for older hardware and will run on a pre-2010 laptop. This includes kid friendly titles like the Portal series, Team Fortress 2, and more mature titles like CSGO, Half Life 2 and Left for Dead 2. Gary's Mod, which is a developers tool used to make games in Source, was a huge hit for my son when he was in middle school.

jgj,

@nixCraft nethack.

resera,

@nixCraft if those specs are ok then outer wilds:
Processor: Intel Core i5-2300 | AMD FX-4350
Memory: 6 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 660, 2 GB | AMD Radeon HD 7870, 2 GB
Storage: 8 GB available space

bushOfBerries,

@nixCraft it depends how old but portal 2 is probably a decade old and a great family friendly puzzle game.

Portal 1 is a bit more indie but will run on even older machines.

andrewgeo,

@nixCraft I don't know if updates have changed that, but Half-Life is pretty well optimized. If violence is not something the children want, then probably Portal.
Pcsx2, dolphin and ppsspp, can let you run games from other platforms quite easily. I'd probably suggest any Zelda, Medievil and Finaly Fantasy game, but if again, graphic content is not desired, then look for games like ICO.
I can't really suggest anything else, since I mostly play horror and/or games with vioent elements. Sorry.

unhook2048,

@nixCraft Minecraft java edition. There's also educational versions of Linux like qimo and sugar

Gremky,

@nixCraft terraria

cpy,
@cpy@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft Celeste, Hollow Knight, Age of Empires 2, Civ 5, Into the Breach, Crypt of the Necrodancer

jjcelery,

@nixCraft define "older"? But Machinarium and Botanicula should run on most systems, and easily obtainable on GOG
