Not to sound like a conservative but I am a little confused by the goal behind the carbon tax. If it's to discourage the use of carbon fuel by making it more expensive, it's going to do a bad job because people don't have alternatives even if they want to save money

jake2,
@jake2@kolektiva.social avatar

@quietmarc yeah it's kind of the ultimate "look like you're doing something, while avoiding any actual effective action because you think that'll piss someone off." And of course it doesn't even work at not pissing people off, more so if anything! You'd probably have less protests if you raised corporate taxes and used that to build some electric trains, and more effective too, but then we don't want to mess with the corporate money.

jake2,
@jake2@kolektiva.social avatar

@quietmarc for sure, especially for the climate. It really came into focus for me in the early pandemic: Govt constantly taking half measures for public health so that the economy can run just a little bit longer, when proper full measures could have ended the pandemic handily. Then when the half measures obviously fail to have full results, the pandemic becomes "just a part of life" and eradicating it is considered impossible. We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas!

The other day I watched Leave the World Behind and while the general concept of the film was fine I guess and the cast was generally talented there were all these weird Boomer Lib moments in the construction of the characters that made it really alienating to anyone who's not, you know, a boomer lib

Then I go on to Wikipedia and I see that Obama personally gave feedback to the screenwriter, telling them how to make the characters more sympathetic

One of the greatest own goals in the history of cinema

@sidereal @julieofthespirits @inquiline @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs @kiwi i respect you as a mutual but i don't know if the world can ever truly forgive California for launching Ronald Reagan's political career. That's like Original Sin

jake2,
@jake2@kolektiva.social avatar

@sidereal @julieofthespirits @inquiline @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs @kiwi a fair point, but consider: that doesn't make it sound less dystopian

I don't think I could disagree more with this! IMO the biggest failure of the USSR was forcing a nationalist Russification over its borders, rather than acting as a true Union of multiple Republics

jake2,
@jake2@kolektiva.social avatar

Great-Russian chauvinism replacing korenizatsiia under Stalin was probably the biggest mistake the Soviets made in the long run

Calling the Cheka a "terrorist police force" is an interesting choice of words. I'm obviously no fan of the Cheka but what is it about them that's singularly "terrorist"? Usually that kind of wording is reserved for non-state actors

Torn between being pleasantly surprised that he's recognizing the Armenian genocide at all, and suspecting that he's only doing it to further his trend of demonizing the Ottoman Empire for Islamophobia purposes

jake2,
@jake2@kolektiva.social avatar

Like yeah 100% a horrific tragedy but do you have to keep saying "Islamist" with such emphasis when you talk about it

jake2,
@jake2@kolektiva.social avatar

Low bar but glad that he's accurately saying that the British and French dividing up the former Ottoman Empire arbitrarily is a primary source of a lot of the present-day violence in the Middle East. I was honestly a little worried he would blame most of it on Islam

When you buy a Mexican coke in the USA you’re buying syrup (made with ingredients shipped from Latin America to the USA) shipped to Latin America from the USA where it is bottled & then shipped back from Latin America to the USA.

jake2,
@jake2@kolektiva.social avatar

@sidereal the mexican syrup isn't produced in mexico? I thought that was why it had different ingredients

jake2,
@jake2@kolektiva.social avatar

@sidereal oh i see I thought the sweeteners would be part of the syrup. That is a weird system

jake2,
@jake2@kolektiva.social avatar

@sidereal i can only imagine it's some weird thing about trying to keep the syrup recipie private by making it in-house

    @log @rooster unironically a lot of my dnd games, since we tend to operate under the assumption that unless stated otherwise you want to fight fantastically evil villains and not real evil bigotry

    @rooster @log sometimes it's fun to imagine a world where you have the power to defeat your real-world struggles! It's just not fun to assume that all players want to do so. Opt-in rather than opt-out.

    IDK who needs to read this but investments in contemporary art have had higher returns than the S&P 500 for decades. Art > the stock market from a moneymaking POV.

    Being a studio/wedding musician has secretly always been a more reliable career than sports… or science.

    I accurately predicted many of the major problems in my adult life due to studying liberal arts when I was a teenager.

    So. It is increasingly hilarious to me hearing all of these STEMlords hate on the arts 🤣

    So the covid vax works by encoding some proteins from the covid virus into an RNA sequence, which the body translates into proteins* and triggers an immune response, right?

    What's stopping us from putting a protein from hair follicles into the RNA, so that you get an immune response to hair? Aka, induced alopecia universalis?
