@simondh Morning!

Yeah, I'd call this a problem somewhere. #nofiles open files of the mastodon user, which just runs mastodon.

So it seems it's possibly a bug, but the odd thing is that it doesn't hit everyone.

Interesting. I do use B2 S3, and indeed, the issue only started after migrating to that.

I'm wondering why I'm having a lot of open/pending connections to Elasticsearch, though, if it's related to B2?

Applied the patch, let's see what happens.

jan,

@paul @mick @derek @michael @haploc recompile was not needed.

After some back and forth with Claire on the bug
An alternate fix is available now (you can find it at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/30450), which looks like it might get merged 😎

Lamppost EV chargers are the answer to how you charge your vehicle in cities.

This is possible because when energy intensive street lamps were replaced by LEDs, there’s excess power for charging EVs.

All cities should do this. ⚡️

@davidho I fear the cables which are run to light poles might not be able to cope with the amount of amperage that goes through when charging an . Causing possible fires, etc.

For slow charging, sure.

jan,
@jan@kcore.org avatar

@benroyce @davidho the plugs commonly used in Europe (type 2) lock when in use. No idea about the tesla standard.

jan,
@jan@kcore.org avatar

@benroyce @davidho the pole locks the cable and the car locks the cable when you have a charge session.

Ofcourse you can disable it car side to not lock, but that's just stupid imho.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

@maddad not quite. Microsoft is way worse. They record it and then allow anyone with access to your user / machine to get your full history. Malware included.

    Can anyone recommend a good town builder game without too much competitive stuff? Just something to build a nice town in.

    I love RTS games but sometimes just the build without the bash would be nice.

    Here’s an idea: let’s call people “people” on the fediverse instead of “users” whenever we can.

    Compare:

    “There are 42 users on this instance.”

    vs

    “There are 42 people on this instance.”

    Which acknowledges our humanity more?

    Language matters. We don’t need to perpetuate mainstream technology’s othering/colonial framing of “us” – designers/developers/other “clever folks” – and “them” – the users (usually one step removed from “dumb user” and usually the ones who get used).

    #peopleNotUsers

    jan,
    @jan@kcore.org avatar

    @aral that would lump in a lot of bots with people.

    Bots are not people. Users, perhaps.

    Got talking to a biker guy, last night. He told me he has been on the carnivore diet for the last two years. When he started this diet he weighed 178kg (~28 stone). He now weighs 88kg (~14 stone). He is only half the man he was!

    His before and after photos were even more impressive.

    @fitheach and how is he medically speaking?
