You fit a 3070 in a 5-bay NAS?? That's impressive! I haven't done much with ML, but it is a very interesting field of work. I've seen people do some pretty crazy things with it!

Ansible is nice, but have you heard of Terraform? Or, if you prefer programming/scripting as opposed to HCL/YAML, there is also Pulumi with lets you use terraform via a few different programming languages. (Ansible is nice though, I used to use it all the time in my lab, and it just works)

Noice, I've been meaning to setup something like paperless! Calckey looks like a good solution/alternative to Mastodon with an interesting user interface.

I haven't heard of the other two, but I'll definately check out kitchenowl, could use some more meal planning!

Lots of Proxmox users here! That's good to see. I'm also running Proxmox after using ESXI in my lab for a few years. Too expensive.

Around 40TB of storage space, of which I’m using roughly 1%. I’m not even a datahoarder, I’m just a storage space hoarder.

Save some for the rest of us, eh?

Sounds like a pretty solid setup!

@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Awesome, that's a good chunk of storage!

Speaking of mass SSD storage, if you play a lot of Steam games, have you looked at setting up an iSCSI target on the SSD to hold your games? I did that for a while, but when I re-aranged my rack a while ago I lost 10gb to my desktop (needed the card elsewhere). Was a pretty performant setup though, all things considered.

Awesome! Yeah, my instances are currently running on DO, but it's pretty expensive hosting in the cloud when you have a lab at home. My internet here isn't very good though, that's the main thing stopping me from moving them on-prem.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Yeah, that's true, they do have pretty good prices. I like DO though because it's where I started and they have a DC not too far from me, so latency is very low.

I have an older R710 running TrueNAS right now with 1tb of (usable) flash storage and 10Gb connection the to the rest of my lab.

I have another TrueNAS instance running as a Proxmox VM with a Lenovo SA120 DAS attached to it, which has 2x 10Tb drives in mirror mode for mass storage. It's also technically connected via 10Gb to the rest of my lab.

Ah, yeah each service seems to implement certain things in different ways which is interesting, and maybe something to work out in the future. I kind of like to though, it draws you to a particular interface depending on the context and features you want for that type of content.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Awe :/ yeah that’s not nearly as integrated as I first thought it would be :(

I wonder if it would be possible to build like, a bridge that converts different types of actions to other actions that make sense on another platform?

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Totally agree, maybe that can be built out, but I think it would require a change in how things are handled currently?

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Oh, that is pretty cool! Custom post types does seem like an interesting solution to some problems I've seen with i.e. Mastodon

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Yeah, I thought the ActivityPub standard was a lot more standard than it actually seems to be. That's probably both a good and bad thing. It would be nice to see some more cohesion though.

I would just call it the fediverse to be honest. Technically they all federate content, and I could respond to this post from Mastodon or Lemmy and it just works.

I think people referring to Mastodon as the fediverse is kind of similar to someone saying "the reddit for " instead of "'s sub-reddit", if that makes sense?

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

I’d probably call this niche of fediverse apps “fediverse link aggregators”. Their UI really only makes them useful for that at the moment (IMO - haven’t tried kbin), and you can technically follow a Lemmy community from Mastodon if you want (it’s not a great UX), but you don’t get the aggregation doing that. At least not without sorting down to just that view.

As a “replacement” for Reddit (I think that moniker is selling it short, it can be so much more), it makes sense. Reddit and sites like it, depending on the specific community are really just a place to share content from outside sources and discuss that content with a like-minded community.

The other type of subreddit I’ve see are tech support style where someone is asking a question of a group of people who are likely to have a good understanding of the subject matter. I think link-aggregation-style sites are the best interface for these at the moment as well.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

I would agree with you... except that Reddit has always been referred to a link aggregator (and forum) since I've used it. It's a bit of both.

The problem is that there isn't really an over-arching name that you can call these services because they are all pretty distinct in their feature sets. Lemmy and kbin get grouped together often, but kbin also has microblogging capabilities which sets it apart from both Lemmy and Reddit.

I've opened some pull requests on the main app repo and the docs repo with changes that should fix the docker install issues people have been having.

Specifically: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/2908 / https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-docs/pull/186

jax,

Yeah, that sounds like a web sockets issue. I think one part of the nginx.conf file from my docs has proper web sockets handling that you can copy into your config.

Posts to multiple instances?

I am wondering at the moment how to handle the different communities on the various instances that are covering the same topic: For example there is a technology community on nearly every instance. If I now want to create a post, do I just post this to one instance to avoid spam (I think most users are subscribed to multiple...

I’ve been work from home since March ‘20 (with about a month in office near the start of ‘23), and I absolutely love it.

At the start I was doing a lot of end-user tech support and kitted out my workstation with a nice desk and chair, and I’ve never been more comfortable working at a desk. I think ergonomics are one of the biggest perks of work-from-home, plus the whole saving on commute thing.
