Yeah, I use GH/CF pages already for most things (except the images blog(?), that's on Medium of all places).

I guess it makes sense to keep the blog it's own thing and just link to it when I write something.

@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ah, so it seems like once you've setup an instance at a domain, you've kinda burned that domain unless you use like a subdomain. That's a bit annoying, but I guess it makes sense.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

That would have been good to know before setting this up lol. Oh well.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

WTF is that? Why wouldn’t you store your signing key on something like a Yubikey that’s specifically designed for something like this? Admittedly you’d have to use a specific key type, but still.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ah okay, so the 2 people and one bot that follow me would be seeing my posts. That seems pretty underwhelming, but makes sense lol

Yeah, I’m going to see if some of my IRL friends are interested, but I’m not sure how many of them use Twitter/Reddit/etc currently.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Yeah, I’ll have to do that.

Thanks for the info, that helps clarify things.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Oh! I did set up a few relays, I didn’t realize they worked both ways! So posts I make on my instance go out to the relay and people subscribed to the relay will see my posts.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Oh awesome, that’s a cool service that relays provide.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ah yeah I’ll have to fill out my profile and do an introduction post!

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Does it make sense to host your own Pixelfed instance (like I’m doing with Mastodon and Lemmy currently)? I occasionally do some photography and having a place to post my images to replace my current site would be nice.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ah, so similar to the issues with finding content on a single user Mastodon instance :(

I think the biggest leap forward for the Fediverse would be making content more discoverable. Just not sure how that would be done.

The other problem for a single user instance would be that anything you post is basically shouting into the void unless people follow you. At least with Lemmy you can post to other instances/communities.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ah, right. I’d set up some relays already, but I didn’t realize that it also shared your public posts with other instances subscribed to the relay.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

That makes a lot of sense! Awesome, I think that negates a lot of the concerns I had at the start of this thread. Turns out people have already thought about these issues lol

True, I'm in the Lemmy Matrix chat and lemmy.ml keeps coming up cuz it seems super slow at times.

I am kinda surprised by how little resources Lemmy/Mastodon use up on a single user instance though. Significantly less than when I was trying to run a Matrix node.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Yeah, I haven't had too many major issues with Lemmy or Mastodon now that you mention it. Lemmy's install docs are... messy, but once running it's been without issue. Hats off to the devs for that.

I’m wondering if search indexers like DDG won’t try to index various parts of the fediverse. I’m not entirely sure how that would work (probably not very well).

For Lemmy specifically, there is a site (I don’t have the link right now), that holds a list of all of the communities on the published instance list. But instances have to manually be added to that list.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

That’s a good point! Most of the subreddits I use aren’t too fractured, but that being the case for larger ones, it’s not too different from Lemmy.

Yeah, I haven't been able to justify their laptops lately. I had/have a 2016 MBP 15" that I gave to my dad last year since it was a bit slow for what I was doing, and since working from home I wasn't using it much. Would be nice to get either a desktop or laptop (or for them to release more desktop apps for iPadOS).

Those are good points. I think we’ll see others start to succeed more once the hardware price comes down. Apple has a habit of driving component prices down due to the shear scale of manufacturing they require.

I love my AirPods… I hope you’re right. They do have a way of taking something like that and making it easy and mainstream.

jax,
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

We’ll see I guess, I hope it doesn’t turn out like the TouchBar on older MBP models or the Apple Watch (mostly just for notifications and fitness)

anders, to lemmy

Lemmy is booming

I have never before received so many reactions and comments on my Lemmy posts before, so it's obvious to see, that there are many new members here.
Welcome to all the new! And I'm looking forward to see more of you here.
Cheers!

That’s actually kinda a really nice feature of federation. Each instance kinda becomes its own image/video host (assuming your software supports it). Just have to actually use that data in the frontend…

My understanding is that a lot of VPS hosts have rules against hosting NSFW content, and they have to be strictly moderated (hopefully for obvious reasons…).
