Well, at least if you buy a Tesla, you're not supporting big oil companies like Exxon — oh wait...

"Oil major Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) is in talks with Tesla (TSLA.O), Ford Motor (F.N), Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and other automakers to supply lithium, Bloomberg Law reported on Monday citing people familiar with the matter."

At $8K to $80K per parking space, with 1 billion parking spaces in the USA, that is between $8T and $80T worth of parking spaces.

The USA national debt is only $32T.

@Ooops @Dubious_Fart CitySkylines has 'pocket cars'. Pedestrians store cars in their pockets for use when they want it.

🤔 Do bicycles create empathy? Or do people that care about other people, tend to care about bikes?

Why is there such a big overlap between "bike infrastructure radicalized people," and "people that care about people that are different than themselves?"

Why is there such a low overlap between "people with trash hateful takes" and "people that want more bike infrastructure?"

jessta,
@jessta@aus.social avatar

@mekkaokereke @ryansingel @cait cyclists don't want to be on narrow footpaths. It's slow, awkward, and driveways make it quite dangerous. Separate bicycle paths/lanes are preferred for thoroughfares.
But you can see in cities with a high number of trips by bicycle that the risk to pedestrians from bicycles in a properly designed shared space is minimal.

Pedestrian deaths related to cyclists are very rare, require the cyclists to be very reckless with their own life and confounding factors like people falling especially awkwardly. The person on the bicycle is much more likely to come off worse in any collision.

EVs have the potential to be worryingly cheap to run. The environmental cost of over-subsidising electric cars is large at a critical time.

It should be more expensive to run an ICE car but it shouldn't be cheaper to run an EV in the future than an ICE car costs now.

We don't want to replace every ICE car with an EV, that would be an environmental disaster.

I wouldn't worry about hybrids, they're not selling well in Australia anymore and EV sales are only limited by supply.

Just found the listing of my 1 bedroom apartment on a real estate website… I had been paying $390/week, then they raised it to $682/week. They want the next tenant to pay $725/week. 🙄

The housing situation in Australia is so fucked up.

Also: no potential tenants showed up at today's inspection. My heart goes out to the landlord, struggling to find another renter to screw over. 😏

@pat that seems like an unsustainable increase. Hopefully it's the first sign of property investment failing as interest rates increase.

While I'm bitching about batteries, large or small. We need laws which require manufacturers to make mobile phone, tablet and laptop batteries replaceable and trade-in-able (<- not a word, I know), with additional legislation requiring manufacturers to be responsible for the recycling. Replacing a whole device because the battery is at 25% of spec is a major part of the problem. And the cobalt in the battery casings can be recycled instead of mined by slaves in the DRC. Most metallic elements are as close to 100% recyclable as to make disposal and mining new a crime against humanity, even without slavery being involved.

The device I'm writing this on was bought with a trade-in of my old device to the manufacturer of these devices. This was only voluntary, though. These trade-ins need to be compulsory and batteries need to be exchangeable. I turn my old desktops into Debian boxes when they become too old to run their native OS after security patches and updates.

@crunchysteve batteries have been the first thing to go in devices for a while(3yrs), but newer battery technology is making longer lasting batteries that should outlast the rest of the device.

I wonder if it's worth requiring batteries to be replacable in that world?

Falling and hitting your head isn't exclusive to bicycles or even more likely on bicycles than other activities. You're most likely to get a head injury by falling in the shower, tripping while walking, or being a passenger in a car crash.

Helmets dehumanise cyclists increasing risk of aggression from drivers.
