From the threads on this over there the comment is that this has already been going on for a bit. They're definitely preparing for the IPO in the usual ways, the site is being strip-mined and everything good about it is going to end.
I am a bit worried about Lemmy, Reddit has millions of users while Lemmy currently only has less than a a few thousand across all servers (edited, looks like I was severely off) . I hope even a fraction of the fleeing users decide to set up servers, because if most of them are just normal users the network won't be able to handle that traffic.
I am also worried about Internet search, up to now the trick to getting decent search results with minimum SEO garbage was to add "reddit" to the query to find threads about what you're looking for, if Reddit falls there won't be a good substitute and at this point i dunno if there's enough incentives for anyone to build a decent replacement.
You're technically correct, but go to any of the various "This is the Fediverse", "Join Fediverse" and the like, and many, many times you won't even see them acknowledge the existence of Lemmy, happened to me when i decided to jump in last month. Compare amounts of people, Mastodon instances can number in the thousands while the best you get here is dozens, maybe low hundreds. Lemmy is tiny, and it's focus on communities isolates it further from the rest of the Fediverse, the federation doesn't help in the slightest, open Lemmy and all you see is the same dozen posts for days, you don't see on Lemmy posts from the rest of Fediverse because they just don't apply. This is fine, lemme emphasize, but it's early stages and it's undeniable.
This is it for me for mobile Reddit. I also cancelled my Gold subscription, and likely will step down as mod for a tiny sub i mod, not gonna give them any more free work. And if (when!) they remove Old Reddit i'll leave the site for good. Too bad Lemmy is still in very early stages (very similar to Reddit in it's first years in fact), or it'd be THE alternative. Hopefully many people will join in.
They shit the bed, which prompted a massive exodus, most of it to Reddit, it propped up A LOT of it's growth and helped solidify it as one of THE sites. Some info here, ironically in a Reddit thread
Why isn't anyone talking about this? It looks like Meta wants to compete with Twitter with a new Instagram microblogging app which will probably be compatible with Mastodon...
Embrace: Development of software substantially compatible with a competing product, or implementing a public standard.
Extend: Addition and promotion of features not supported by the competing product or part of the standard, creating interoperability problems for customers who try to use the "simple" standard.
Extinguish: When extensions become a de facto standard because of their dominant market share, they marginalize competitors that do not or cannot support the new extensions.
This has been done for open protocols by other companies before, many, MANY times. They're likely going to "joyfully embrace" the Fediverse, add some "improvements" that will be proprietary and only run on their software, then when people become addicted to "Meta Fediverse", close things down dramatically so that people only run their stuff. We must prevent that bullshit.
I must confess to getting a little sick of seeing the endless stream of articles about this (along with the season finale of Succession and the debt ceiling), but what do you folks think? Is this something we should all be worrying about, or is it overblown?...
This video by supermarket-brand Thor should give you a much more grounded perspective. No, the chances of any of the LLMs turning into Skynet are astronomically low, probably zero. The AIs are not gonna lead us into a robot apocalypse. So, what are the REAL dangers here?
As it's already happening, greedy CEOs are salivating at the idea of replacing human workers with chatbots. For many this might actually stick, and leave them unemployable.
LLMs by their very nature will "hallucinate" when asked for stuff, because they only have a model of language, not of the world. As a result, as an expert said, "What the large language models are good at is saying what an answer . And this is a fundamental limitation of all these models, it's not something that can be patched out of them. So, bots will spew extremely convincing bullshit and cause lots of damage as a result.
NVidia recently reported the earnings they've gotten thanks to all this AI training (as it's heavily dependent on strong GPUs), a trillion dollars or something like that. This has created a huge gold rush. In USA in particular is anticipated that it will kill any sort of regulation that might slow down the money. The EU might not go that route, and Japan recently went all in on AI declaring that training AIs doesn't break copyright. So, we're gonna see an arms race that will move billions of coin.
Both the art and text AIs will get to the point where they can replace low level people. They're not any danger towards proper experts and artists, but students and learners will be affected. This will kill entry position jobs. How will the upcoming generations get the experience to actually become trained? "Not my problem" will say the AI companies and their customers. I hope this ends up being the catalyst towards a serious move towards UBI but who knows.
So no, we're not gonna see Endos crushing skulls, but if measures aren't taken we're gonna see inequality go way, WAAAY worse very quickly all around the world.
In a surprising move, Japan’s government recently reaffirmed that it will not enforce copyrights on data used in AI training. The policy allows AI to use any data “regardless of whether it is for non-profit or commercial purposes, whether it is an act other than reproduction, or whether it is content obtained from illegal...
Considering how much Japan has banked on it's culture and art, this is a surprising Fuck You to artists, and i bet all the AI models from now on will be trained there
