Generations of solar panels: installation upgrade, nominal 63W to 375W. The old panel that served for around 30 years was still working, but a bit low-powered. De facto output seems to be around 6 times higher as well for the new one. The Victron system is also good at teasing out power despite some clouds.

The most annoying part was when I messed up the ”no tools needed” MC4 connectors and had to drive to get a new pair.

Interesting site.
It is already a fairly known viral fact, that mammals like humans are more closely related to bony fishes (like the perch) than bony fishes are to sharks. I was however surprised to find, that lampreys are even more distant from sharks than bony fish!

Miele appreciation post:
I thought our over 15 year old washing machine had broken down, as it would get stuck on the final emptying phase. Cleaning the pump didn’t help. Was going to call the first repair ever for the machine, but had not gotten around to it.

Well, now I cleaned the drain a few months later and turns out it was blocked with gunk, which triggered some safety threshold in the pump. So instead of being broken, it was working as designed!

So, Danish illustrator and graphic designer Preben Dahlstrøm, a true master of the illustrated field guide in the 1970s: I’m trying to find some biographical information on him – but I have nothing more than that he might have been born in Odense in 1917 and died in the 1990s.

Anyone with access to older Danish newspapers? Maybe there was an obituary?

Does your language use the terms staccato and crescendo outside of strictly musical contexts? According to today’s breakfast table discussion they might be much rarer in metaphorical use in Finnish compared to English or Swedish. Esp. in English it is fairly common to describe something happening in a staccato rhythm. #language

I generally like @MonaApp, but the alt text input is in obvious need of a redesign (on iOS). It hides the image, the window is unnecessarily small. Also text recognition from images would be super helpful, this was something Metatext did well. #MonaApp #A11y

The Gates belt drive is a fantastic invention, but I sure wish someone would make at least a partial enclosure for it.

Literally the only thing that breaks these is gravel, so would make a lot of sense to at least have the option of, like, just maybe… stopping gravel getting in the drive?

The current covid discourse in the US vs. e.g. Europe is a curious thing. Concerning the updated CDC isolation rules, I checked, and several countries are less strict about isolation recommendations. E.g. Denmark, Finland, Italy. Yet I don’t see much debate around that. Arguably these countries have better support for calling in sick. New Zealand (unsurprisingly) remains strict. Also, it doesn’t seem that just-in-case self-testing is done much or expected at least in Finland.

Just finished the Dune trilogy. I read somewhere that ”Children of Dune” is considered a slog, but I found it quite entertaining, after an arguably slow start. The books hold up surprisingly well, considering how problematic a character Herbert was!

Also interesting to note how much Hayao Miyazaki paraphrased Dune in the Nausicaä manga.
