Dumb Sunday thought:
Odd how birds seem fairly standard size? Cannot recall seeing, say, a crow twice the normal size, or a pigeon that is a third smaller than its peers.

Or maybe you just don’t notice the range of variation because birds are mostly fluff?

There could be insanely buff sparrows that weigh 3 × the species median and we just don’t notice!

Unable to can with these guys.

Hospital symbols exhibited in the excellent ”Concrete dreams” exhibition, showing until the 15th of October in the Helsinki Museum of Architecture

“The new generation. International symbols for the hospitals”. A grid of 1970s modernist hospital symbols, some of which look quite amusing. Kidneys or two swollen pac-man characters chatting?

Stylesheets would be pretty high on my wish list.
Like fonts, colors, etc. that you can modify in one place and have them auto-update everywhere if you change them.

Maybe there is some sort of workaround with variables?

Oddly, there doesn't seem to be any news in Finland about Hurricane Otis that hit Acapulco, Mexico on Tuesday.
It is the first category five hurricane to ever make landfall on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean in NOAA's statistics.

Communication down, casualty numbers still unknown.

According to experts, the storm exceeded forecasts due to sudden intensification from warm sea water.

It again makes me want to ask the climate change sceptics: what if you are wrong?

Visualizing knowledge tomorrow the 16th! Looking forward to a full day of talks.

If someone is interested in the prehistory of the event, we have an archive of past speaker presentations preserved over at http://tietonakyvaksi.fi

Saw a guy yesterday who had Obelix as his nametag. Had to check with the first name database search and there literally is a handful of Finns named that.

Unpopular opinion warning?
Was hanging out with Finnish-speaking friends and their kids.
When I talked to my daughter their girl went ”what did you talk about, I didn’t get a word”.

It struck me how it is a bit silly that a most Finnish kids will learn no Swedish whatsoever until 7th grade. English and (in this case) Spanish instead.

To be sure, I’m not advocating for losing those languages. But fitting in early basic Swedish? We’re at 5.16% by a fair amount the largest language minority.

Excuse me, but I just learned about SELF SUPPORTING WITNESS CONES
and while I understand their use now, everything about them including this illustrative diagram just sends me.

Did a little rabbit hole excursion around ”subliminal” messaging. I think there’s reasons to be sceptical of the effect, but it is interesting that there are studies of people measurably reacting to single flashed words without consiously being aware of having seen them. And yeah, highly unlikely that it could be used to effectively influence decisions.

Curious how your computer creates and preserves this digital microhistory of past visited wifis. Like these here, a bunch of networks used on a trip to Iceland back in 2016. This was even with a different computer.

Disappointed in Quora for not having an answer to the question whether you can travel by sea inside an appropriately furnished freight container. I'm sure attempting it is against multiple regulations, but nevertheless.

Junnila, Finland’s new Minister of Economic Affairs, is fond of using nazi jokes and dogwhistles. This is certainly a good look in international contexts? Here a ”gassing” ad borrowed from German neo-nazis (link to twitter). The party is unsurprisingly the Finns.

Typographical detail time:
The book ”Elolliset” (eng. ~ ”living beings”) by Iida Turpeinen features geographical coordinates with minutes and seconds of arc. Instead of the correct prime symbols, quotation marks have been used. This is a common mistake and can happen e.g. if straight quotation marks are used and then replaced. Also, surprisingly many fonts miss these symbols, but as they are simple in form they can usually be borrowed.

A friend shared this … diagram with me. I think this is a very good example of forcing a poorly chosen metaphor onto your data until maximum confusion ensues. The featured chart types and chosen examples also feel pretty random.

Is this character familiar?
The helmeted, shouting big-handed ”no entry for unauthorized persons” figure, a regular at workplace fences in Finland.

Variations seem to exist at least in Europe, but where did it originate?

Kid had a friend coming over and and they specifically called me after school to ask if I could come and pick them up with the cargo bike, because said friend wanted to ride in it. Was working from home so couldn’t be bothered. They are soon 10 years and still haven’t grown out of finding it fun apparently :D

Love this (checked some of the names, they are indeed real).
Interestingly, the woodlouse is ”gråsugga” in Swedish, literally ”grey sow”. That is not on the map, but e.g. grammasow is quite close.

File under electricity is eldritch magick:

Fridge (a 12V thing, connected to our cottage solar system) causes strong disturbances in the FM radio when running. Radio receiver is 4 meters from fridge. Channel, antenna angle and exact position of radio reduces or increases disturbances. Also holding the antenna may decrease disturbances.

HowEver, it seems that the disturbances went down when I adjusted the fridge so that it stands level. So… what?

Are the boundaries of Europe floating around in a GIS format anywhere, or will I just have to redraw them from this map? To clarify: Not the country boundaries, but the Eastern border of Europe that follows the Ural mountains and crosses Caucasus.

Very odd InDesign/PDF bug:

Font rendering incorrectly in an interactive PDF, but only in Chrome.

Previous PDFs exported from the same file render correctly. Only obvious difference is that the faulty file is PDF version 1.7. and the other 1.5.

You can’t choose the PDF version in Interactive PDF export. However, this was fixed simply by re-saving the PDF in Acrobat (no need to change version). So something tiny is broken in InDesign’s 1.7 pipeline and not in Acrobat’s.

Observation on visual culture, sparked by re-reading Lem’s Solaris:
The novel is full of vivid and disturbing imagery relating to the ocean (which both films alas mostly sideline), yet there seems to be very little visual art online inspired by it, apart from the movie posters and book covers.

I’m arguing that most of what could be termed ”fan art” is heavily reliant on some pre-existing iconic imagery. This also directly feeds into AI art. No Solaris storyboard by H.R. Giger, no fan art.
