So, an update on things. #Calckey

  1. I'm very sorry for all of the degraded performance lately on calckey.social. As you may or may not know, we've been testing changes with our codebase, database deployment, ims deployment, and a whole lot more. After a lot of testing and changes, I thought that we were good enough to start opening signups again. Turns out... we're not. As I continue to work on things and start team up with some very smart people who've worked in deployment and scaling systems, we're going to do our absolute best to make sure that we can handle things on all ends, and hopefully get extra hands on deck for day-to-day operations, so it's not all on my shoulders. I was sadly unable to attend to a lot of things yesterday due to being out of town for the holiday, and being in a no-service area for the majority of the day, so I didn't know that there were issues until it was too late. Thank you for your patience as we go through growing pains. A full write-up on what went wrong, the steps we took, and how it's fixed (once it's fixed!) will be made after all this is done. For real.

  2. I did NOT expect this amount of support, interest, and coverage! Hitting 13k from 11k in a little over 2 days across all servers is still boggling my mind. And it's not just calckey.social -- so many other servers are getting new users, and even ~30 new servers cropped up! Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. I'll make sure that I do my hardest to make sure you all have a great experience.

  3. As promised, you all deserve a peak into what we've been working on in secret for months. More details to come tonight/tomorrow. Stay tuned. 😉

Sincerely,
Kainoa

joesbrat67,

@kainoa @april - Shouldn't the owners and mods for those servers be doing their own promos?

joesbrat67,

@kainoa @april - Oh, I don't dispute that, but if people aren't going to those other serves...

Seems like some out-of-the-box ideas may be needed to get others to check them out. I'll be honest. It could be the small populations on each. It might make potentials think there's a reason for that.

joesbrat67,

@kainoa @april - and how were the counts compared to other servers?

joesbrat67,

@april @kainoa - How does one define when a server in the #Fediverse is TOO big? No one has yet been able to explain that claim.

Looks like calckey.social is working as expected again, but that was a VERY long outage period. Hoping to get some answers as to what happened...

Punko, to random

Jeez, calckey.social, are we there, yet?

#Calckey

joesbrat67,

@Punko @punko @punko - This downtime is extremely worrying. Has anyone been able to confirm only this server was affected and no others?

joesbrat67, to random

Someone should tell gurl here to stop trying to make fetch happen!

joesbrat67,

@MariaTheMartian - That was so worth a case of the giggles! 😆

joesbrat67, to fediverse

Hi to all my new and current friends in the #Fediverse!

Since 2007, I have been participating in #HarborToTheBay. #H2B is an annual charity bike ride to raise funds for those living with HIV/AIDS. The ride takes place every September, with the ride route going from Copley Square in Boston to the Harbor Hotel in Provincetown - for a total of 126 miles in ONE DAY.

Yes - you read that correctly. 126 miles. One day!

The ride started in 2003 as the brainchild of Michael Tye, a Boston businessman who had participated in the NY to Boston AIDS rides and wanted to do a more local version that would ensure 100% of all funds raised would go to four designated beneficiaries. However, Michael passed due to illness just a few short months before the 2003 ride kicked off.

Fast forward 20 years later - and over $6 Million dollars raised - Ride 21 is coming this September. The ride date is Saturday, September 23rd.

And with that, it will be a very bittersweet ride, as this will be the final ride for #HarborToTheBay. It was a decision that wasn't made lightly, and given various changes over the years, the ride board made the decision to bring the event to a close.

I'm in training now and will be prepared to ride this one last time. I'm looking forward to the ride and will cherish the knowledge of this last ride being one that I will hold close to my heart. This does not mean the fight to end HIV/AIDS is over. Not by a long shot. The goal to end HIV/AIDS in my lifetime (hopefully) will take on a whole new path.

I hope you will assist me in this last ride. I'm looking to raise $3000 for my beneficiary, Access Health Massachusetts. They work tirelessly in the research and development of new treatment methodologies. In addition, they help to offset costs for medications that might be too costly for some.

Please check out my #H2B online donation page for more about the ride, and to make a generous donation. Should you have additional questions, please feel free to message me.

Thanks in advance!

Since it's been approx. 14 hours since this post was created, any chance we can get an update on the current total users?

RE: https://calckey.social/notes/9gps2ggxbdz43u8c

joesbrat67,

@kainoa - NICE! What do you think the odds are of making it to 13K in the remaining 34 hours?

joesbrat67, to fediverse

Word has it the Instagram #Fediverse-based Twitter killer app was leaked out to the Google Play store yesterday.

Looking at the screenshots provided, it's a bit unclear still as to what customizations/integrations it will allow, like GIFs, custom emojis, polls, etc.

I'm thinking that it's time to migrate this account over to . I really prefer the interface. The only question is to spin up my own server or move to my blahaj.zone account that has so far gone unutilized.

joesbrat67,

@affekt - My suggestion would be to start small. Migrate first, then after time, spin up an instance if it still makes sense to do so.

joesbrat67, to mastodon

If you've been on a #Mastodon instance and have been hearing a lot of buzz about #Calckey, NOW is the best time to check it out. The experience will be like night and day, with features not yet considered in the Masto space.

Hi all -

This one is directed to those who have migrated from to .

I'm curious to see if the decision to migrate has worked out well for you, or are you having buyer's remorse?

So far, so good here...outside of the ongoing site maintenance over the last few days. Beyond that, I feel like it's definitely a step up.

How 'bout you?

joesbrat67,

@Melpomene - I agree. Even functionally, it feels quite a bit different. And that's a good thing!

joesbrat67,

@darth_akeda - rebrand?

joesbrat67,

@darth_akeda - I was not aware of this. Why would they rebrand now, given the short window since the initial launch?

joesbrat67,

@Punko - Great minds think alike, as I did pretty much the same thing! The interface and customization options are just too much to not take advantage of. Hopefully, Mastodon code will catch up, but that make take a while.

joesbrat67,

@Punko - Yeah, I don't think I would go back. The design was too behind the times and often I would complain about how much the multi-column "special" view was too much like TweetDeck (RIP).

All-in-all, I think Calckey came along at the right time.

joesbrat67, to mastodon

I’m seeing a LOT of posts about another major wave of new #Mastodon accounts, but I have to wonder. Is anyone tracking any influx to #Calckey? And should we prepare for more migrations from #Masto to here?

#JustCurious

@kainoa - you'll be happy to know I've made an ongoing financial investment into calckey.social!

THE FEDI IS BIGGER THAN MASTODON

With so much Mastodon chatter I am here to remind you that there is a lot more to the Fediverse than just boring old Mastodon.

In my opinion Mastodon is grayscale and the Calckey instances are bright, vivid Technicolor.

See for yourself. Join the fun. Play with markdown.

joesbrat67,

@MariaTheMartian - The one caveat to this is to know the differences in the custom emoji libraries between Masto servers and Calckey servers.

For me, access to the best custom emojis is what really sets the #Fediverse apart from the rest of the standard social media sites.

So, if you're thinking of migrating, but want to know what is available for custom emojis on the #Calckey server you want to move to, here's what to do:

First - go to https://emojos.in/. This is where you can see what custom emojis are on which server in the #Fediverse

Second - type in the name of the server. Example: if you want to know what's available on calckey.social, you simply type in the name of the server. There are also check boxes that allow you to see unlisted and animated emojis on that server.

Third - when the list appears, you will see the emoji and the code needed to add to the server. Clicking on the name will copy the code to your clipboard. You can do this for the server you wish to migrate from and the server you want to migrate to

Fourth - send a message to the server admin that you want to move to see if they will accommodate adding the emoji code. They may want you to create a profile on the server first, so consider that before asking. Also, there are no guarantees the admin can/will accommodate for one reason or another, but I'll be honest. I've been very lucky here on calckey.social. The admin has been more than accommodating. Plus there's always someone creating new ones, so there's always a chance to make the custom library grow and give users more opportunity to get creative with their posts.

Have fun with custom emojis!
