I just opened an old Rock Band guitar I found to see 3 rotted AA batteries, unfortunately. Once again, folks, please: just use wires. I have PS2 controllers that still function, 20+ years on, which MIGHT need a little cleaning but aren’t anywhere close to death. You know why?? Say it with me: wires.

So my lovely, hot swappable keyboard has some issue where the M key is just not working. It’s not the switch! I’ve tried 7 different ones. There’s no visible damage I can see, so I have to assume either something is wrong with the PCB or the hot swap connector.

Which means I’ve had to pick up a new, second, inferior keyboard to use until I can find the time to resolve the issue. I could buy what is effectively the same keyboard… but for more than I originally paid for this one. So, no.

Well, I figured this out. In looking at pics of the hot swap PCB sockets I was thinking were the issue, I realized the sockets have little fins which are what contacts the switches pins. Knowing that I was finding chatter when I pressed hard or even wiggled, I took a guess at these things just being bent too wide.

Took it apart and… yep. It was clear just from looking at it and comparing to one next to it. Took some tweezers, bent them back in place and voila. Clicky-boi is back in action.

I… have complaints about the Starfield main quest ending but I could put those aside as artistic differences. The thing I can’t put aside is the part where choosing to be Starborn means all the tutorial prompts get reset?? As if I haven’t been playing this game for 35hrs now?

In terms of reasons to complain about Starfield: I’d probably complain about what they did to persuading people. This is a joke of a system. Make the damn thing tactical or chance based. It’s a noob mistake to try and mix those two things together.

I’m ready to strip persuasion out of my repertoire entirely at 10hrs into the game and that sucks because it’s a core strategy for me in Bethesda games.

If dice.camp goes the full block route on Threads, then I’ll be changing instances. Which is a bummer, because dice.camp has been a pleasant little home to chill on.

My read of responses to Sage’s poll is a mix of:

  • limiting seems fine unless we see bad behavior hurting us
  • Facebook/Meta is evil and we are taking a hard stance against anything owned by them

I’m fine with full open, but I’ll defer to the limited/close it if things go sideways.

I love how UIs, including the Mastodon client I am using right now, often use paper airplanes as an icon to indicating sending something…while real paper airplanes are defined by their lack of accuracy or reliability.

I’ve gone ahead and set up Bookstack on my home server in order to act as my personal knowledge base and documentation. I’ve got a workflow down for configuring new apps, so setup went pretty quick.

I’m now thinking about all the different things I have been wanting to write down, but never felt like I could reliably keep it somewhere in the long term.

First step: grandma’s cookie recipe.

I’ve been looking at a bunch of open source, self-host supporting, wiki projects to decide on one to use at home for our family and personal documentation. I’m leaning towards trying out Bookstack (https://www.bookstackapp.com) so far.

The benefits I can see:

  • Docker install supported
  • My preferred auth mechanism is supported
  • It’s not built on Node.js
  • It’s not built on React

Having spent the last couple years using a gas stove and now being forced back into electric stove use… I fully understand why people prefer gas cooking. I can’t say I am ok with all the effects of it, but… anyone who invents something as effective as gas that runs off electricity will have my money pretty damn quickly.
