Hi :)
I'm a new member of this amazing community and I would like to have my first post on the amazing breakthrough of Jeff Hawkins.
Before giving my opinion, I would like everyone to tell me whether they know the theory of have they read the book or the original papers and If so what's their insight on them?
I think the material in this research is pretty much fascinating and would like to engage and talk about it more.
Good morning. Today #UAW4811 wakes up to an amended request for injunctive relief where UC has described how an action by SJP, an entirely unaffiliated group, and picketers forcing trucks to "weave through" us have resulted in significant disruptions.
@moirearty i sort of know, having lived through the last 5 years, but i wonder how on earth we evolved into a species who actively resists our perhaps singularly miraculous ability to respond to acute viral evolution of our own creation through similar miraculous ability to manipulate our environment to the point of dooming our species multiple times in the span of 5 years.
Dear computer friends - as information workers on strike at #UAW4811, im trying to think of some digital picketing strategies. Ways of incurring additional costs and disruptions to operation that are within the bounds of the law. One of the biggest levers we have is grading, and UCLA uses a fork (?) of Canvas (bruinlearn). Does anyone have any bright ideas for how to run up a cloud bill? Something along the lines of uploading enormous files to course pages, asking students to download a directory with millions of files as a .zip, that kinda thing. Something thats an arms length shy of CFAA but something that could let our students and remote colleagues help with the strike. Any ideas? Boosts welcome. (I do not speak for or represent UAW 4811 in any way as a rank and file member)
Edit: dm me for my signal if you are curious about such a topic and are not necessarily volunteering any information in the affirmative or negative
@cykonot
Aha gotcha. Yes extremely effective action would of course never be considered by the fine upstanding members of the UAW and I appreciate the recommendation to steer clear
Today #UAW4811#UCLA rank and file are picketing loading docks again, and have been doing the work to coordinate with sibling unions to respect the picket line - sheetmetal workers local 105 is walking off, and roofer union working on Powell expected to follow shortly. Rank and file is doing the heavy lifting and coming with the strategy.
R&F is doing participatory and egalitarian organizing, allowing people to lead independently, making people feel like theyre a part of something. We're not really sure what admin caucus is doing, but I think the difference is summarized neatly by one group coordinating in an extremely active all-to-all groupchat and the other in a very sleepy announcement channel. Rank and file organizing works because people are smart and capable and brave and want to help, not be told what to do by a distant chain of command. A beautiful sight seeing this bottom up energy flourish and take over
We are getting pretty dang good at holding the soft picket line, where even lots of nonunion trucks are being turned away or being made to unload from the street and pull in extra labor bc of the perception that they wont be able to pass, even if they were persistent we would let em through bc thats the law after all
"The strikers are demanding amnesty for grad students and other academic workers who were arrested or face discipline for their involvement in the protests, which union leaders say were peaceful except when counter-demonstrators and other instigators were allowed to provoke unrest"
