Can we please talk about RFK Jr.’s neurocysticercosis without demeaning people suffering from brain trauma?

tdverstynen,
@tdverstynen@neuromatch.social avatar

@jonny

My problem is that this condition is probably an epidemic in poorer countries (something one of my professors in grad school always pointed out). So this whole news cycle feels trivializing towards something that does cause real (and preventable) harm to probably millions of people unlucky enough to be born in areas with poor sanitation (these are food borne pathogens).

This is a garbage headline that is fractally wrong and also why biden has lost 20% margin in youth vote in a year. The only violence at the #UCLA encampment was committed AGAINST them by the police and the fascist mobs the police gave carte blanche to. The encampment was NOT chaotic - it was highly orderly, well disciplined, and a place of education and solidarity. The encampment is a protest AGAINST violence sanctioned by the Biden administration.

Circulating word is that plans to disperse Palestinian solidarity encampment at 6. A number of groups including faculty and campus unions are planning on rallying in defense. Meanwhile an administrator has entered the camp to negotiate

    Also we should stop calling college students “kids”. They are legal adults and should be treated as such.

    Sorry, I wasn’t referring to how you were using it necessarily. My apologies for that confusion. I was more referring to how people use “kids” when talking in general about college students

    So we are clear, according to the Roberts’ court:

    Federal student loan forgiveness: TYRANNICAL OVERREACH!

    Federal protections of reproductive rights: TYRANNICAL OVERREACH!

    Any sort of regulations on guns: TYRANNICAL OVERREACH!

    Environmental protections: TYRANNICAL OVERREACH!

    Application of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment: TYRANNICAL OVERREACH!

    The idea of blanket immunity for Presidents, even for acts that involve assassinating rivals or overturning election results: Well that’s an interesting and nuanced question that we must seriously consider by ignoring all historical & constitutional precedents.

    Between Columbia’s decision to have law enforcement quell what was otherwise a fairly typical, peaceful college protest because it was pro-Palestinian and USC’s decision to cancel the speech of a valedictorian simply because she is Muslim, I think we can safely dispel the notion that universities are unapologetic bastions of liberal progressivism.

    As a victim of childhood gun violence, it took me decades to really come to terms with the trauma. Now we’re raising an entire generation of similar gun violence survivors because we can’t stand up to the small, loud, and well financed minority of Americans who love their guns above all else.

    We can do better.

    In a recent Dan Ariely paper:

    "An experiment was conducted. It was preregistered. The results section was written up in a way that reads as if the experiment worked as planned. But if you go back and forth between the results section and the preregistration plan, you realize that the purportedly successful results did not follow the preregistration plan.

    They’re just the usual story of fishing and forking paths and p-hacking."

    It's time for a major change.

    I am considering doing less of what they expect of me (writing fewer grants, publishing fewer papers, running a smaller lab) and more of what matters (long form writing, outreach, and mentoring at all levels). I am in a position of privilege now, with tenure and full professorship, which means I should be working to make the system better for those fighting up the ranks behind me.

    Today I discovered that there are certain "high profile" professors who are regularly courted for (and strategically accept) coauthorship on papers, with minimal effort or work, solely to increase the likelihood that the paper will be accepted at a top tier journal.

    This is basically the Trump business model applied to science.
