As I keep warning: The last good reason to print & distribute newspapers is the inserts. They are going away....

@davew I’m surprised that you find Mastodon so quiet. My experience is pretty vibrant. It’s not the same as Twitter, but there’s a large migration of academics who I know, and a lot of new people, arts, & orgs I’m discovering. My Twitter feed in contrast has reduced volume of interesting stuff and more anger/noise about Twitter’s demise & other concerns. My Mastodon feed doesn’t lack for important current issues but they are more deeply addressed & no $8 randos shitting in the conversation.

@davew I think I read the whole thing. You mentioned the lack of discussion about Succession and other points of interest to you. I get it. Different people are attracted to different water coolers. I meant it honestly that I was surprised you’ve found it so boring here, and thought it might be interesting to contrast experiences. Twitter has failed me, not you. It was not intended as a judgement, and I apologize if I seemed like an asshole.

@davew You wrote that we join networks for companionship, and that the new services (Mastodon being the quietest) have a steep hill to climb. It seemed as if you wearied from lack of interest, that is to say you were bored. I guess we're engaging one another now, but I don't feel very positive about this conversation either.

So what are some engaging aspects of Mastodon? Or Blue "Ski" FWIW? (I'm not inclined to bother with it, but maybe you've seen something) Thoughts on how to people them?

Oh, King, eh, very nice. And how do you get that, eh? By exploiting the workers! By hanging on to outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society.

I wake up to the damned coronation. I find it offensive.

@jeffjarvis How’d he become king anyway? I didn’t vote for him.

Gordon Lightfoot died today, which is also Great Lakes Awareness Day 2023. Fitting, since his music in no small part probably helped many people know the Great Lakes, to understand their importance and natural power.

Shakespeare also has a lot of drag. Numerous plays have characters that dress in ways now ostensibly illegal in some states. Also the parts of women were all played by men in Shakespeare's time, which was considered the morally upstanding way to show a play in those misogynist (in ways different from today) days.

I was yesterday years old when I learned that a recently hatched echidna is called a puggle. Puggles!

A puggle growing small spines seated on a fluffy towel
A puggle resting in human hands like a lounge chair
