I cannot praise @mystmarkdown enough as a productivity tool. It is not only useful, it adds a new dimension in how you can productively use a Jupyter Notebook/Jupyter Lab. I have tried using plugin for Jupyter Lab and that works wonderfully, but I personally think using Jupyter Lab separately from a markdown document that is myst enabled, makes a world of difference. You can write in markdown, import tables and figures on demand and insert them in the document, then process it later. Keeps everything tidy and fast moving.

The only feature that matters for any social media experience is the people who are on it. I'm amazed at how many technology leaders forget this and get distracted by the underlying tech, protocols, features, etc.

Elon is a great example. He thinks he bought a platform. But what he really bought was a community. And of the two, the community has degraded far more than the platform.

This is the isue with driven instances. The software is robust, but many sys admins are illiterate about the "social" constructs of what makes a networking stick, being geeks. Second, a lot of people who started with Mastodon in the first place claim they came here because they were 'mistreated' by others in twitter and Facebook for various reasons, they came up with peculiar provisions of no quote tweet, blocking people at the drop of a hat, rude words (like 'content warnings', why warning?). Besides, I avoid using Mastodon instances if I can because of most posters are very rude and hostile. On the other hand, most non-Mastodon instances have a relatively relaxed environment, and instances driven by for example, are designed to be fun to hang out with. No wonder ended up being a nice, friendly place to post ideas.

Then under Musk is another level of purgatory!

This take is annoying.

But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".

How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?

No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.

For an English language audience, the 500-character limit is a good option, but not for other international languages where a concept needs more "characters" to be displayed. For example, and . The point to note here is that twitter does not have to be inclusive of everyone, but being a software or Calckey.social can choose to be inclusive. That is a big difference. clearly does not get the 'social' part of social networking, from onboarding to features to how they are worded to a host of other things.

Here's the problem.

Recent growth on mastodon.social is greater than the growth rate of November 2022.

But growth on other servers, like mstdn.social, has flatlined.

This has been confirmed to me by numerous Mastodon server admins.

Well, that’s exactly happened. So server admins started installing mastodon, and the network grew. Perhaps at the expense of others (oh well)

I can't see an obvious way to post into that group. Have struggled to find documentation.

I assume it's to allow a closed group of people to chat, but can't see how.

But nothing compares to what's happening with https://calckey.social (and ) right now.

Right now, the growth is entirely word of mouth.

No advertising, press releases, Silicon Valley-style hype.

But last November, I told @kainoa that this could be a project that changes their life.
