One of the features I miss most on this platform is the ability to simply format text. Something like a stripped down version of Markdown: I don't expect links (nor do I think they'd be valuable, maybe too dangerous), but code blocks with non-proportional font would really be something I'd use.

@mpts there are Fediverse implementations which have it. https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/user_guide/posts/

jpmens,
@jpmens@mastodon.social avatar

@tdp_org @mpts I don't see any formatting in your post. ;)

mdBook is a command line tool to create books with Markdown. It is ideal for creating product or API documentation, tutorials, course materials or anything that requires a clean, easily navigable and customizable presentation.

So lisp and postgres and zero documentation and not even a word about the db schema.

Enjoy.

EDIT: ignore this, and thanks to Maxime for putting me right:

cat /dev/zero | :

completes immediately.

(Yschaef also said this, but I didn't get it.)

===============

Holy moly: TIL from @abimelechbeutelbilch that piping to colon ( |: ) in the shell is much faster than writing to the bit bucket ( > /dev/null ). Just tested.

This is in German, but you'll see the commands and times clearly: https://mastodon.social/@abimelechbeutelbilch@fulda.social/112435707590643241

@max @abimelechbeutelbilch

I don't see so.

jpmens,

@max @abimelechbeutelbilch

so sarcasm used or intended. The important bit is from the man page:

: [arguments] No effect; the command does nothing beyond expanding arguments and performing any specified redirections. The return status is zero.

IOW we can also pipe to

| : bla

@max @mpts @abimelechbeutelbilch

oops. You are quite right.

I failed in properly testing!

If I ever have my own company (no worries, won't ever happen!), I will establish the following rules:

  • It's forbidden to use TLAs to abbreviate team, tool or product names.
  • It's forbidden to use company-name abbreviations to prefix those team/tool/product abbreviates to avoid the TLA rule by making it a 4LA, 5LA or WTFLA.
jpmens,
@jpmens@mastodon.social avatar

@zhenech regarding those forbidden abbreviations ... I suppose I could google all those acronyms, but I'll skit it.

Forcing me to sign up to your corporate invoicing thing weeks ago was such a wonderful experience, thank you for that. And I particularly love that you ask me to send you my invoice days after I submitted it electronically to the portal.
