I'd like to be snarky about this, but it's sad to watch 's slow death. That stupid, beautiful site has been vital to me in my development as a poet. And as someone who can probably be described as Very Online, I used to find the site good in a bunch of other ways as well. But at some point, you have to go. He's deleting old tweets to save a bit of money on storage space. And meanwhile, all the tweets on the Arab Spring, the Mumbai attacks, etc, are gone. They're just...gone.

Looking to get off Twitter. The one thing really keeping me there is the larger community of poets, who are inventive and fascinating but also incredibly resistant to change. So if you're on Mastodon, and a poet, and I don't follow you, hit me up so I can change that.

Unofficially: 2:25, 10 minutes slower than last year. But my running was super spotty all summer, mostly just 30 minute runs with the dogs, one of which is gonna be 13 next year and can't go super fast. My longest run was maybe 6 miles, and I ran twice that today.

I don't like it, but I don't hate it.

Yeah, don't think I can speedrun 10 units by EOM, but once I'm done the course, I'm done with #Duo and cancelling my subscription. Zero reason why this answer shouldn't be accepted. #Gaeilge

First ripe tomatoes of the year. We're going to have a lot. And given how much of the garden is filled with potato blossoms, it should be a good year for that, too.

Okay, December project accountability post.

Lase December I started and completed quinze, a curses-based 15 puzzle.

This December I'm going to finally write down one of the pieces of music floating through my head and put the score on my GitHub. It's a guitar etude in memory of a friend of mine who died in 2020.

This afternoon: finish a poem, finish notes for a review and/or start writing it. Roast beef in the oven at 3:30. Viola (Mozart) and guitar (cross tuning, Skip James). Some of the poems recently have been hovering around a theme, a little surreal, unusual for me.

After a dozen years and several toner cartridges, I finally need to replace the drum on my Brother laser printer. This thing's been a workhorse. Drum comes Wednesday, so I'm not going to be able to have the latest +doc printed and assembled today, as I'd hoped. Oh well.

I've had my second running injury in under a month. Last time I was pulling the dogs away from a fence, not watching where I was going, and hit a fire hydrant, hard; this time, I just stepped wrong, and wiped out on the pavement. Feeling a bit despondent, and unlucky. I've run for twenty years now, with barely a tweak. And then twice in three weeks?!

Wow, that's torrential - so dark I can barely see across the yard, rain coming down in sheets. I watered the yard this morning and I think that I may have wasted a few minutes doing so.

The last two nights, with our neighbours coming and going and partying all night, have been a real bad time to be dogsitting the world's most neurotic corgi, who has a hairtrigger, piercing bark, and hears everything. My sleep is so messed up. Absolutely wrecked.

As everything else collapses into a sort of algorithmic sameness, I find that I don't love Mastodon, I don't love Cohost, but they're absolutely good enough. I find I use Mastodon more than Twitter these days, and I keep up with Cohost to occasionally get really interesting long-form stuff I can't get here.

Googling potato maturation time (seeing the leaves on my potatoes turning yellow at the bottom [normal] and red at the tips [normal?]) and stumbled across a very wholesome reddit thread where people are learning that you can just slam a potato into the ground and get a lot more potatoes.

Once again outing myself as the most boring person in the Fediverse, but when I used to work at a place that had a dress code (yeah, yeah) I found myself needing to iron shirts a lot. One of our friends, who works in sales and has to wear a dress shirt every day, suggested getting a good iron. And man, do I ever hate how right he was. I've got a few shirts I need to iron for an upcoming trip and a good iron will do them in literally half the time of a cheap Black & Decker.

I'm re-reading the Chronicles of Prydain for the first time since I was a kid, and while I get that it's YA-ish, there's something funny about the whole series fitting within one Sanderson novel with hundreds of pages to spare.

Bonus: no spren.

So I picked up Montsarrat's "The Cruel Sea" on a whim - I'd watched the movie with my dad decades ago. And I've been very pleasantly surprised at how good it is. 500 pages and my plan is to turn in early tonight and try to finish it.

Just finished Soul of a New Machine. It was fascinating and engaging, but also really difficult to read: the push and push and push to get Eagle out the door, with the pride but also the immediate change. People leaving, the team broken up. The sense that they'd worked so much overtime (and of course it was unpaid overtime), and for what? Everyone's heard of IBM, and most tech people are familiar with the name DEC at least somewhat, but what about Data General?

When it became clear that Bitbucket had jumped the shark - dropped support, went only, developed a smarmy, corporate feel - I sighed, switched SotW to git, moved everything to . And now GitHub's front page advertises itself as "the world's leading AI-powered developer platform", and I feel it starting again. I'm tired. Life is short. I want to write code and make things, myself.
