I have been volunteered to run the “Practical and Complex Examples of ARIA Live” unconference session at #AccessU2024. So come by 116 at noon with your lunch and… unconference.

@aardrian I would have gone to that if I hadn't been leading my own session.

Dash Pass is free in Canada if you have Amazon Prime. I was vaguely tossing around the idea of canceling both, but I guess I'll keep one subscription and let it pay for both services. Since my yearly pass renewed in February, I also got an unexpected $72 refund when I signed up. I guess this has been a thing for a while; I remember people talking about it last year but I couldn't figure out how to sign up then. It was very easy. And yes, unfortunately this is only available in Canada--or at least I can't find reference to US Amazon or any other marketplace being eligible. (Edited with a link that actually has a redeem button on the page.) https://www.amazon.ca/prime/offer/doordash/prime-deal

@simon You get GrubHub's equivalent service in the US.

It just now hit me that tomorrow is my last actual day of high school. I've got some other things I need to do, namely on Friday and Tuesday, but what... what the fuck?

jyarbrough,
@jyarbrough@dragonscave.space avatar

@TheQuinbox @jscholes The head of security at my previous employer has started to really get involved in efforts to make cybersecurity more accessible since he started working there. They did a talk about it during Axe-Con back in February.

With apologies for any misspelling, does anyone know what ever happened to Ali Al-Hajamy? A blind person I followed on Twitter and a couple of other places, seemed to adore reading and literature above all else.

jyarbrough,
@jyarbrough@dragonscave.space avatar

@jscholes @simon I've occasionally wondered what happened to a gal I'd followed on Twitter that was a developer/designer and great advocate for accessibility. She basically fell off the face of the earth three years ago and I've always wondered what happened" Though, knowing she also had mental health struggles and was pretty open about it, I'm terrified what I might find out if I ever looked into it.

I didn't see this advertised very many places, but it's saved my ass so many times. One of my friends wrote a C program for Windows that works like a pipe, and puts any output from a command line application into a multiline text field that you can search through and read. For example, astyle -h|show. https://github.com/samtupy/pipe2textbox

It seems like this is the month of appliances. Last week I got a new, more powerful microwave with a Braille overlay included in the box, which replaced my 12-year-old 700W microwave. This week I ordered my first ice maker. I had a very fun call with Brenton from @AiraVI, who was seemingly just as excited as I was when we finally found one with actual good reviews and tactile buttons. Knowing how quickly these things make ice, I'm kind of annoyed it took me so long to think of this. My understanding is that these machines only make one piece of ice at a time, which means there's just one section of the machine that gets all the concentrated cold. This claims to be able to make 9 cubes in 6 minutes, which is pretty standard.

jyarbrough,
@jyarbrough@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon @AiraVI That sounds pretty similar to the countertop ice maker we used to have. It had great tactile buttons, but you did have to babysit the thing just a little bit.

jyarbrough,
@jyarbrough@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon @AiraVI If it's like the one I had, not long at all. I'd left it running and kinda forgot about it once and all the ice it made melted.

jyarbrough,
@jyarbrough@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon @AiraVI Oh, for sure. When I had it, I'd make a pretty big batch over a few hours about once a week. Also, just a heads up, you may see the cubes freeze together in the freezer, but they generally break up pretty easy. The one I had worked by dipping a set of super-cold probes (for lack of a better word) into a water reservoir and letting the ice form on those, so they'd come out kind of wet.

jyarbrough,
@jyarbrough@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon @AiraVI It's probably the same kind of thing as mine was. The best way I can think to describe them is cylinder-shaped with one end of the cylinder havving sort of a round, dome-shaped end. Also, the middle of the cylinder is empty since that's where the probe thingy was.

jyarbrough,
@jyarbrough@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon Yeah, that sounds just like the one I had.

Should designers code? Apparently we are back on this, I share @brad_frost ’s opinion in here: “Designers need to understand and work with the grain of the medium for which they’re designing.” Doesn’t mean they need to know how to implement designs in code?. Yup.

@stephaniewalter @brad_frost I'd agree you don't need to know it all, but at least having a grasp of the basics is a plus. Especially semantics, at least from an accessibility perspective.

Sometimes I'll open a website and it is simply unusable on iOS. This one, for example. It works fine on desktop browsers, but on safari, all I can see are the menu button, a lot of pipe characters and not much else. I had to use screen recognition to get the customer service phone number. Thoroughly underwhelmed by how little transparency I can get into the underlying code on an iPhone. This is why I carry around a phone-sized computer. https://www.americanexpress.com/ca/en/customer-service/contact-us.html

jyarbrough,
@jyarbrough@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon @yatil That reminds me of something I found on an assessment at my last job. It had a menu that was treated as a dialog and, when activating a link, kept that open with focus trapped but opened the new page behind it. Gotta love SPA weirdness, he said sarcastically.

I wonder when invitations got disabled on this instance. Does that mean we're actually closed to new people? I guess I should decide on a good open instance that doesn't have a specific topical theme where I can send new Mastodonians.

I ... think I just bought VMware Workstation and Fusion at a student discount with my old university email forwarder. It's only a 40% discount, but still a whole lot better than buying them at the normal cost. One step closer to having no pirated software on this machine ... although if I find a crack for Supertone Clear, i'm going to run it with zero apologies or regrets.

jyarbrough,
@jyarbrough@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon I wouldn't say nobody, but I'd agree that it's something that should only be used sparingly and with great caution.

Somewhat local maple shack / pancake house, Cartwright’s Maple Tree Inn, also gets national press:

For the 2017 eclipse, I remember there was a website where you could put in your zip code and it'd very accessibly tell you when the eclipse would start, when it would reach as close to totality, and what percentage of totality you would experience. Is there anything like that for this eclipse? Please boost for reach. Thanks.

jyarbrough,
@jyarbrough@dragonscave.space avatar

@jaybird110127 @blindbat84 Honestly, I just typed something like "eclipse time" and my city in Google. Might need to go more granular in larger cities, but my Austin suburb is only one zip code I think. I know here time blacked out varies wildly based on what part of the metro area you're in, but my area's getting about 3 1/2 minutes.

I'm getting to a point where I'm getting really really jaded towards new technology. Oh, cool, you've released the brand new samsung AI Galaxy S20AI pro plus with it's touch screen and it's so needlessly complex to navigate UI that you can't get anything practical done? Cool. Snore. You've released your new AIPhone 16 pro max plus extra with it's solid state volume and power buttons, AI powered face AI ID, AI home screen that thinks it knows AI what you want? Cool. Snore. Oh, you've released Windows AI 12 AI, where the entire shell is AI replaced with AI Copilot pro plus maximum? shoots self

And today, in WTF school technology. The laptops they gave seniors at the beginning of this semester are running Windows 11, have 4 GB of RAM, a 64 GB SSD, and a 4-core seventh gen Intel I5 from 2017 or so running at 1.00 GHZ. But it gets worse! One of the restrictions they put on the new Windows images is... you can't view your battery! It's just, completely fucking gone from the system tray. And, you don't even get notified if it's running low! Suffice it to say this has pissed me off so greatly that I'm now figuring out how the Windows battery API works.

jyarbrough,

@TheQuinbox I think I had a work laptop at an old job with that problem. Or maybe it was just it wouldn't do time remaining, I can't remember.

Longshot request: Can anyone identify the exact version of this song of which this is a sample? I know the song is Mambo No. 5 by Perez Prado, at least that's how Shazam identifies it. I've found various versions in multiple places, but never this exact version. Very short sample attached. Explanation in next post.

Sometimes I just sit here and wonder how different my life would've been if I hadn't lost my vision as a kid. Obviously I'd have a totally different friend group, but I wonder about so many other things too. How would I have been in school? More social than I am now? Would I have ever made many of the bad choices I made in middle school if I hadn't been bullied for being blind? Would I still be a hacker? If so, would my skills be far better due to being able to use more tools/systems? (I think this one is incredibly likely). Fun way to play with your mind for an afternoon.

@jyarbrough@dragonscave.space avatar

@TheQuinbox I didn't lose mine until my late 20's but often wonder the same thing. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be doing the work I do now.
