i’ve been trying to boost traffic to https://www.fossil-social.com/ lately and i’ve noticed that both LinkedIn and Twitter might generate “activity”, but rarely any clicks. OTOH mastodon generates a ton more of both.

frankly, i don’t understand the algorithms behind those platforms, and most people i talk to about it don’t either. which, again, is kinda the reason for fossil to begin with

Thought provoking research — that are trained predominantly on English will also “think” in English. When translating German to Japanese, it’ll first get converted to something closer to English in between.

Let’s be honest, if you’re a software engineer, you know where all this compute and power consumption is going. While it’s popular to blame , y’all know how much is wasted on , microservices, overscaled , spark/databricks and other unnecessary big data tech. It’s long past time we’re honest with the public about how much our practices are hurting the climate, and stop looking for scapegoats https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/the-staggering-ecological-impacts-of-computation-and-the-cloud/

I noticed that a lot of people were getting hung up on the open source version because they didn't have time to set it up. I'm hoping that this helps.

do you get self conscious about liking, boosting or replying to the same person repeatedly?

i do. it doesn’t seem rational, imo, but i do

so what's the advantage of 3rd party utility classes over inline styles? less documentation?

listening to the republican response

“can you really say you’re better today than you were 3 years ago?”

me, thinking back to the covid years: “fuck yeah, dodged a bullet there”

when you say you’re a “senior engineer”, does that mean you’re old, or you just feel old?

google is a pretty good fuzzy DNS, but beyond that i pretty much only use perplexity these days. it’s a big UX improvement for finding answers to vague questions

peeps — are there clustering algorithm implementations (especially k-means) over a pre-built index? like maybe over an HNSW vector index

the naive O(n^k) is killing me…

why would you want a machine to be conscious? setting aside the debate of if it is, what would that let it do that an unconscious machine couldn't?

i always do web browsing in "private" mode in safari when on iOS, so i always "accept all" cookies bc i trash tabs often so the cookies are pretty much only good for that single site

is that good reasoning? for maintaining privacy

aren’t AGI, and probably aren’t even much of a step toward it

but the proof isn’t, “because it’s just linear algebra”, “just logits”, or “just” anything. that’s like saying the brain can’t be intelligent because it’s just electrical modulation. or vortices are just swirling fluid.

all complex systems are simple if you break them down far enough

in 2012 most tech people were worried about a bubble. Also in 2013-15, and 2016-20, and 2021-now. i thought for sure the crypto crash was going to trigger a larger bubble pop. yet somehow, it still hasn't happened.

not saying it won't happen, but there's a whole lot of history behind naysayers being wrong
