talking about homelessness with my conservative family

my dad gets it now, after seeing an explanation. The more he hears about the self-reinforcing cycles, the more he starts nodding in agreement about the need for housing to break the cycle

my brother is not getting it. He seems to have dug into a position and won’t change his mind

aside: my brother is MAGA, my dad is more of a never trumper

two things can be true:

  1. machine learning and/or neural networks are far more capable than the people who use “just” to describe them would like you to believe

  2. we’re not getting AGI until after we understand what intelligence is, and we’re not throwing billions of dollars into that

What a great reminder that simply being “data driven” isn’t enough. If the model is wrong, your results are going to be bad. In other words, there’s no substitute for critical thinking, not even data

does anyone know how to disable "dynamic protection" on HP printers?

our printer has "cartridge protection" turned off, and DP is supposed to be part of that. DP was turned on via an over-the-air update, and it prevents us from using non-HP ink, which means that ink that we were already using no longer works

the HP docs say the only way to disable it is to disable firmware updates and never enable them again, which seems...bad?

WizardLM2 8x22B exceeds performance of GPT4 in some benchmarks

  • Apache2 👍
  • progressive learning instead of all-at-once means less power-hungry and more data efficient during training
  • Co-Teaching and Self-Teaching are intriguing, I want to hear more
  • from Microsoft , I imagine GPT5 must be nigh, if they’re releasing competition for GPT4

think about how much political capital was spent on repairing roads, bridges, etc. That’s not sustainable. We’re far too overextended in terms of infrastructure, we don’t have the political will to maintain it

imagine a construction company that put out a statement, “we’re going to stop using power tools because there’s a lot of workplace injuries”. That would be crazy. Sure, i get that with a circular saw, it LOOKS like you just have to pull a trigger, but there’s actually a bit more to using it safely. You train your workers

oh cool! you can measure the cost of your code easily with Code Carbon

it tracks what hardware you’re using (CPU, GPU, etc.) and matches that up against the carbon intensity of your local power grid. They have shortcuts for popular cloud providers

You can’t optimize for what you can’t measure, so now hopefully we can start optimizing for impact on the

this morning on the run i got to the top of the hill and was resting, bc i'm out of shape, and off in the distance i see a bird trotting my way

as it gets closer i realize it's a turkey. it had a big red gobbler and its neck was iridescent. It was actually really pretty, so i just watched as it approached

I would love to see a non-profit that's basically, "Apache for contributors". Apache is great for companies who want to de-risk open source software. What about an org that goes, "i see that your project is important to the community, what can i do for you today?" Maybe fund, maybe find contributors, maybe acquire build infra, always listen and support
