@emilymbender I think it’s a strategic error to make this a struggle against automation. AI is not like a weaving machine, a combine harvester, a shipping container: all that stuff works - and brought great benefits (albeit at a cost to some groups). But AI produces garbage designed to fool humans into thinking it’s real. It brings no benefits, and the costs don’t just fall on to specific groups, it falls on to the consumers of it.

@emilymbender A future where programming is done by AI, given a cursory scan by humans, is one where people will suffer: from malfunctioning medical machines to cars that crash, from corrupted medical records to rejection of applications for jobs, loans, bail. It’s an appalling future for everyone.

It’s trying to set this up as a labour vs. capital contest - an argument that’s guaranteed to be lost because it always has. The narrative should be an argument about fraud, not about automation.

You know how there's a bunch of critical infrastructure powering the internet (and presumably a lot more than the internet) is badly maintained and underfunded (often by just a few people)?

We know about several examples in the open source world, but I'm sure we all also know about several examples in each of our personal lives, in each of our places of business.

A while back @mintynet had his car stolen in a keyless theft.
