BREAKING (the climate):
Based on daily values, the April average of atmospheric CO₂ at Mauna Loa was 426.5-426.6 ppm. That's a big jump of ~3.2 ppm from last year's 423.35 ppm!

It's also the highest CO₂ concentration the world has experienced in 14 million years.

April was the 9th warmest on record, here in the Netherlands. Hardly noticed, because the first half was the warmest ever, but the second half was much cooler.

April 2024: average 10.8°C
April average 1991-2020: 9.9°C
April average 20th century: 8.2°C

An investigation found 36 Facebook groups posing as separate grassroots movements opposing the expansion of London's ultra-low emission zone schemes to reduce air pollution. They were set up by the Conservatives as part of a coordinated political campaign.

Long-durational thermal storage is coming.

The world's largest thermal storage project is underway in Finland with a capacity of 90 GWh, enough to meet the heating demands of a medium-sized city for up to a year.

Sustainable2050,
@Sustainable2050@mastodon.energy avatar

@janrosenow It's great, but define "medium-sized city". 90 GWh would be the annual heating demand of 9,000 homes = 20,000 people?

• 1.68°C warmer than an estimate of the pre-industrial average for 1850-1900

Overheard in Dutch train, in loud phone discussion on various friends having their wedding parties abroad: "X organized his 21 party at his parents' home in Monaco. They arranged and paid for flights of all of us. I never drank so much beer on a short flight."

Spectacular climate news: EU-ETS emissions decreased by 15.5% in 2023, compared to 2022 levels!
Electricity emissions -24% (more renewables, less fossil)
Industry emissions -7% (less output + efficiency gains)
Aviation emissions +10%

"With this development, ETS emissions are now around 47% below 2005 levels and well on track to achieve the 2030 target of -62%."
ETS emissions (mainly industry, electricity, intra-EU aviation) cover over half of total EU emissions. Buildings and road transport are not in the ETS (= Emissions Trading System)

Another big jump in atmospheric CO₂ at Mauna Loa!
Based on daily values, the March average was 425.3-425.4 ppm, that's 4.3-4.4 ppm higher than last year. Very unusual. Could still be partly due to El Niño.

This was the warmest March on record here in the Netherlands:
Average temperature 8.9°C.
That's 2.4°C warmer than the (already warmed) 1991-2020 average, and 3.7⁰C warmer than the (already warmed) 20th century average.

It was 0.7°C warmer than the 20th century April average!

War a real threat and Europe not ready, warns Poland's PM Tusk
He revealed that Spain's PM, Pedro Sánchez, had asked fellow EU leaders to stop using the word "war" in summit statements, because people did not want to feel threatened. Mr Tusk said he had replied that in his part of Europe, war was no longer an abstract idea.
