Happy birthday, @kimsal! Today is a day for listening to the white album. Enjoy!

kimsal,

@ramsey belated thanks for the wishes!

TIL that Mezzio configurations are merged (meaning that keys that appear in one array but not in another are merged with other keys that appear in an array).

This makes testing challenging.

kimsal,

@sarah Can you expand on the specifics you mean here?

Crell, to python
@Crell@phpc.social avatar

I'm trying to setup a app in a container.

It requires gcc...

gcc is giving compile errors on C code when I try to pip install my dependencies.

This is why is still the most widely used server-side language by a wide margin. 😕

kimsal,

@Crell I see in 'pecl install' sometimes, but... it's pretty rare I need to do that.

Yeah - we don't see C compiling errors in composer install, which is where we're at often.

I hit C/gcc compiling issues more with node/js dependencies than anything else.

I love the “There I Ruined It” YouTube channel! 🤣🤣🤣

This new song is amazing!

I wouldn’t say it’s their best work, but it feels like the last song of an album, and so, it’s fitting to be considered the “last” Beatles song. It’s an appropriate coda.

kimsal,

@ramsey Why didn’t we talk about this Friday?! Technically, it’s pretty accomplished. Was a bit disappointed that some of the original demo was cut, but not replaced with anything else. Overall, not unpleased with it, but don’t want anything else like this attempted.

What did you think of the video?

kimsal,

@ramsey Video - no spoilers - mostly fun/enjoyable - mostly upbeat/fun. Some annoyances on a technical level which are puzzling - quality seems sketchy, almost like it was rushed.

But... watch when you can. I should have brought it up to you.

Any thoughts on the new Stones album? ;)

kimsal,

@ramsey Also, the notion of 'singles' may be ... useless in 2023. But the single is 'Now and Then' b/w 'Love Me Do' - it's literally the 'now' (2023) and 'then' (1962). Fitting.

Any dinners going on tonight at @longhorn ?

Are you going to Longhorn PHP in a couple of weeks? I hope to see you all there

#PHP #conference #WebDev #Software #SoftwareDevelopment

kimsal,

@awoodsnet I'll be there!

kimsal, to php

Any PHP folks going to be at the upcoming All Things Open in Raleigh next week? .

kimsal,

@ramsey ack!

if you can make it over, i can get you a pass :). Yes, I know it's very last minute, but thought I'd extend that all the same.

kimsal,

@ramsey Figured as much. Pencil October in for next year. :)

Will I see you at longhornphp by any chance this year?

kimsal, to random

Are there any speed benefits to using 'readonly' properties in PHP8.1/2? Introducing these in to a codebase being upgraded, and visually it's a bit nicer, but wondering if there's any perf benefit (either in regular mode or maybe JIT mode).

kimsal,

@derickr Thanks for the confirmation. While I always hope for little bumps here and there, given that it's been out for a while and I hadn't seen any notes about it, I kinda thought there may not be any.

Thanks again :)

I can now announce, I'll be speaking at @longhorn PHP in November this year, about living life on a legacy project! Tickets are still at blind bird price until tomorrow; hope to see you there! 🤘 https://www.longhornphp.com/

kimsal,

@asgrim @longhorn Congrats!

Just looked at the pricing for the new m7i instances and...oh hey look a price increase. If you want to keep the same pricing as m6i, you get a new type of CPU throttling, distinct from the burst credit system of t-series instances.

Looks like you can use 100% CPU 95% of the time (over a 24 hour period) though, so...this is likely fine for most use cases, as you won't notice the throttling, will notice the perf increase, and basically won't have a price change vs. m6i.

/cc @Quinnypig

kimsal,

@ian Wait... that can't be. I've been told forever that AWS never increases prices! /s

kimsal,

@Crell Would be nice. I fought many times with teams/colleagues over fixing many small things now, in the moment. Putting 20 bugs in a backlog, then waiting for a PO to decide to 'groom' them then determine the "sprint points" to "fix" them is inefficient and costly on just about any scale you measure with. That was "industry standard" I was told. I spot a bug, know the fix.... let me do it now. Waiting weeks or more will have big ramifications on fixing it later, and adds to cognitive load.

Live long and PHProsper

kimsal,

@Skoop Sorry for delay. Mike Pavlak from Zend gifted it to me. No idea where you'd get another one!

kimsal,

@ramsey @Skoop Thanks! Didn't know about that site!

I've seen infrastructure-as-code.

I think I've recently seen 'code-as-infrastructure'. Not good.

kimsal,

@ian re: code-as-infrastructure - came across a company that builds business rules in to a load balancer (and... some other 'infra' piece that escapes me now). Not temporary 'strangler-pattern'-type stuff, just "oh, I can do stuff in the load balancer - now I don't have to think about code".

kimsal,

@ian They already had working stuff but it was done by someone who'd fallen out of favor, done on boring old Linux/PHP. All this new stuff is done in google cloud, meaning... it's far less simple to test anything locally. And you're charged more for it. Yay!
