My friend just got a Mac Studio but doesn’t want to pay a small fortune for the Studio Display. He’s got an LG connected and mounted higher on the wall. That’s for recording/monitoring stuff. He’s looking for a good desktop monitor that’s close to “Apple fidelity”. I’m coming up blank. But I don’t follow PC monitor news much anymore. Anyone got a suggestion?
I wasn’t jesting at all. Don’t get me started on the DoJ and DMA. I’m brutally angry.
I want Apple to be more restrictive, not less.
I want the wall of the garden to be higher and stronger.
Apples not perfect, but they care more (which is to say, at all) about the user experience than anyone else, because that’s the business model they’ve chosen.
There are examples everywhere even with their success Apple still can’t persuade companies to do the right things for UX…
@mathowie
South Carolina is rough and borderline dirty.
Geno was right. They don’t play basketball.
They’re fouling everywhere and everything and the refs don’t have the guts to call it. Just like on the men’s side with rough teams like Houston and Tennessee.
I think the danger in pulling out of the EU market is that a lot of (I guess) highly skilled EU people would work hard to produce a reasonable replacement. Which might actually become a EU success story if you think about it.
If Apple stopped selling iPhones, and taking apps from, the EU; what would prevent them from continuing to offer the App Store and other Apple services to customers who either travel, or purchase iPhones from other countries (eg switzerland)?
Is the EU going to build their own great firewall?
How important is the App Store with its 3rd party apps for iOS devices? I think one way of looking at it is by asking the following question:
Would you prefer an iPhone with only 1st part apps - i.e. no App Store at all - or an Android phone with the Play Store and all its 3rd party apps?
To me there's no doubt 3rd party apps add so much value that this tilts the balance towards Android. 3rd party devs add a lot of value to iOS (and the other) platforms.
Progress pics of removing a matte film from a cheap monitor using some damp paper towels. The colors are much nicer now and the reflections aren't bad at all in my well-lit office, especially when on. Certifiably a terrible idea, but trying to build the courage to try it on a more expensive monitor now 😛
I appreciate the point of view. But I’m getting an awful lot of the same vibes I had when old school Mac people were exposed to OSX. Is it worse in terms of what they would have considered a Mac experience then or an iPhone experience now? Almost certainly. But change happens as whizz bang products become commodities and if your company can’t adapt to that then a big enough market is going to demand some changes.
Reading threads on Reddit of people simply asking, “where did all the 4K 24 inch monitors go” only to see hundreds of comments arguing that it’s pointless to have 4K at such a small size and that’s why they don’t exist anymore.
The most frustrating thing is that it’s obvious the vast majority of the loud voices proclaiming the stupidity of even wanting such a monitor have never seen one in person running in highdpi mode. They seem to think all that matters is screen real estate.

The ultra wide 5k2k is surprisingly good for side-by-side reference/working combo.
I use it very effectively for AutoCad or photoshop on one side—with lots of preference panes—and still enough room for a pdf reference or browser window on the other side. It completely replaces the old style of using two smaller displays.
I wish wish wish it was retina quality, but then it would have cost $3000 instead of $1300…
@masukomi@bigzaphod
Throw me a link if you know of one, but I’ve yet to see — from any company, at any price — a 30”+ ultra wide at whatever the retina equivalent would be… 7k3k? 8k3k?
Or any 30”+ 6k or 8k…
…except for the XDR from Apple and the aforementioned (discontinued) Dell 32”
All of which is how I ended up with two studio displays (my office situation changed, so I got a nano texture to swap in for the standard glass), and the LG ultra wide 5k2k.
Related — lovingly used tilt + height standard glass studio display available for sale… 🤣
Anyone out there drive an Ioniq 5? I’m looking at it for my next car and need to gather opinions both good and bad. If you have thoughts you wanna share please let me know. Thx!
