My friend just got a Mac Studio but doesn’t want to pay a small fortune for the Studio Display. He’s got an LG connected and mounted higher on the wall. That’s for recording/monitoring stuff. He’s looking for a good desktop monitor that’s close to “Apple fidelity”. I’m coming up blank. But I don’t follow PC monitor news much anymore. Anyone got a suggestion?

kraigschmidt,

@Gte

Tell him to bite the bullet and get a studio display.

You get what you pay for.

Apple really should pull out of the EU on principle.

This whole march of events is just plain embarrassing for both sides.

Why doesn’t Apple ban electron apps?!

Or at least provide users a way to systemically disable it?!

I wasn’t jesting at all. Don’t get me started on the DoJ and DMA. I’m brutally angry.

I want Apple to be more restrictive, not less.

I want the wall of the garden to be higher and stronger.

Apples not perfect, but they care more (which is to say, at all) about the user experience than anyone else, because that’s the business model they’ve chosen.

There are examples everywhere even with their success Apple still can’t persuade companies to do the right things for UX…

South Carolina is rough and borderline dirty.

Geno was right. They don’t play basketball.

They’re fouling everywhere and everything and the refs don’t have the guts to call it. Just like on the men’s side with rough teams like Houston and Tennessee.

The more we hear from Breton and Vesteger, the more clear it becomes that they want to knee-cap Apples entire business model.

They’re too arrogant to imagine Apple could pull the iPhone.

I think the danger in pulling out of the EU market is that a lot of (I guess) highly skilled EU people would work hard to produce a reasonable replacement. Which might actually become a EU success story if you think about it.

kraigschmidt,
@kraigschmidt@mastodon.social avatar

@helge @Gte

If Apple stopped selling iPhones, and taking apps from, the EU; what would prevent them from continuing to offer the App Store and other Apple services to customers who either travel, or purchase iPhones from other countries (eg switzerland)?

Is the EU going to build their own great firewall?

kraigschmidt,

@Migueldeicaza @helge @Gte

kraigschmidt,
@kraigschmidt@mastodon.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza @Gte @helge

I’m sitting across the Atlantic but it surely feels like the commission (Vesteger, Breton, et al) want Apple to leave the eu.

If that is the goal, they’re well on their way.

If not, then they may be flirting with an unintended outcome in a way they don’t realize.

Maybe they can’t imagine a big company leaving, but if there is one who could, it is definitely Apple.

Yes. Finally.

I’ve been wondering when people would start mainstreaming the idea that (maybe) Apple should pull out of the idiotic EU. It’s not worth 7%.

Stupid (and also, politically motivated & excessively punitive) regulation should have consequences.

How important is the App Store with its 3rd party apps for iOS devices? I think one way of looking at it is by asking the following question:

Would you prefer an iPhone with only 1st part apps - i.e. no App Store at all - or an Android phone with the Play Store and all its 3rd party apps?

To me there's no doubt 3rd party apps add so much value that this tilts the balance towards Android. 3rd party devs add a lot of value to iOS (and the other) platforms.

Progress pics of removing a matte film from a cheap monitor using some damp paper towels. The colors are much nicer now and the reflections aren't bad at all in my well-lit office, especially when on. Certifiably a terrible idea, but trying to build the courage to try it on a more expensive monitor now 😛

Added wet paper towels to the top of the monitor to loosen the film
Monitor with film removed with screen turned off, reflections not bad
Monitor with matte film removed and screen turned on, colors look great and reflections very minimal

With regards to this kind of piece: https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/03/12/sinofsky-building-under-regulation

I appreciate the point of view. But I’m getting an awful lot of the same vibes I had when old school Mac people were exposed to OSX. Is it worse in terms of what they would have considered a Mac experience then or an iPhone experience now? Almost certainly. But change happens as whizz bang products become commodities and if your company can’t adapt to that then a big enough market is going to demand some changes.

Reading threads on Reddit of people simply asking, “where did all the 4K 24 inch monitors go” only to see hundreds of comments arguing that it’s pointless to have 4K at such a small size and that’s why they don’t exist anymore.

The most frustrating thing is that it’s obvious the vast majority of the loud voices proclaiming the stupidity of even wanting such a monitor have never seen one in person running in highdpi mode. They seem to think all that matters is screen real estate.

kraigschmidt,
@kraigschmidt@mastodon.social avatar

@bigzaphod
Isn’t this just the long-standing divide between Mac and pc users?

Isn’t what you want the 24” LG ultra fine? (Notwithstanding the shit enclosure.) https://www.lg.com/us/business/computer-monitors/lg-24md4klb-b

I don’t know if it is available anymore.

I shopped for a long time to see what else was available, and I ended up buying the 27” studio display (twice! Long story.) for my personal Mac Studio, and a 34” LG 5k2k for my work pc (which is 20% more expensive now than it was 4 years ago!). https://www.lg.com/us/business/commercial-display/products/desktop-monitors/lg-34BK95U-W

kraigschmidt,
@kraigschmidt@mastodon.social avatar

@masukomi @bigzaphod
The ultra wide 5k2k is surprisingly good for side-by-side reference/working combo.

I use it very effectively for AutoCad or photoshop on one side—with lots of preference panes—and still enough room for a pdf reference or browser window on the other side. It completely replaces the old style of using two smaller displays.

I wish wish wish it was retina quality, but then it would have cost $3000 instead of $1300…

kraigschmidt,
@kraigschmidt@mastodon.social avatar

@masukomi @bigzaphod
Throw me a link if you know of one, but I’ve yet to see — from any company, at any price — a 30”+ ultra wide at whatever the retina equivalent would be… 7k3k? 8k3k?

Or any 30”+ 6k or 8k…

…except for the XDR from Apple and the aforementioned (discontinued) Dell 32”

kraigschmidt,
@kraigschmidt@mastodon.social avatar

@masukomi @bigzaphod

All of which is how I ended up with two studio displays (my office situation changed, so I got a nano texture to swap in for the standard glass), and the LG ultra wide 5k2k.

Related — lovingly used tilt + height standard glass studio display available for sale… 🤣

Agreed.

But, apparently it’s Tesla-like in its almost total lack of physical controls. 👎
