I'm thinking about installing , the "usable" rolling release version of Sid again. Last time I did was back in 2014 or so.

At the time I knew only Ubuntu, and I wanted to experiment with something newer, to get a feel for a rolling release or so. Then I tried Arch, Alpine, and now wonder how would a debian-base feel like again (especially if I can get a minimal install to build upon)

Anybody used it recently?

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

Cool, has an option to install a "No X" image which I presume comes only with the core of the system installed. Nice for us, who seek to do a minimal and custom install to try out rolling with it.

Should make it lean and mean for me to start testing :)

Off to update to 3.18! Featuring Kernel 6.1 :D

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@everonline go for it! I daily drive it since 2021, and it has never once broke on me. I like it so much that I even replaced my flash drive installs of Puppy etc with a customized frugal installation of Alpine that has everything I want and is super lightweight. But get ready to do a lot of customization work (I wrote a script to automate all the tasks you need to do until having a nice GUI setup).

I still use other OSes (mainly FreeBSD and Debian) but Alpine has a special place in my heart!

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

... and it broke. How classy!

Probably something with /boot not knowing how to figure out the partition of my encrypted disk or something I guess. But it's a quarter to midnight and I have no idea on how to start looking into it.

Suggestions?

So it turns out that yesterday I somehow managed to fix on , which had been broken (not loading the GUI) since I experimented with updates to 13.2 and back.

This time I truly used the hacker spirit, though, because I probably could've done something in the source code to fix (it's plaintext Python, after all), but instead chose the quick path of a hack that turned to work quite great! Maybe I should write it up in my blog.

@evilham linked the machine-id dbus file to where the program was looking for. I think the hardcoded locations are Linux specific, so maybe that's where there was trouble

HELLLLL NAAWWWWW this is some bullshit.... I caught my throttling the connection to the FRICKING PKG SERVER!

For real, speeds were like 8.3kbps in a fiber connection. And then I confirmed the BS by adding a VPN on top and running pkg upgrade again. Boom, back to 1~2Mbps again. Caught 'em Red. fucking. handed.

Why even do this shit? For real. It's just fucking HTTP!

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@FiLiS yes, I am sure. I used the same mirror without (8kbps max) and then with (2Mbps avg) a VPN. Nothing else changed. And even without VPN I tested by opening YouTube for a minute and the loading speeds seemed normal (that is, no significant latency). They unapologetically decided to throttle the connection.

@valpackett situation seems to have worked out a little better now, but still traceroute shows some slowing down at a node that seems to be owned by my ISP (45ms ping instead of 2-5ms on other hops). Huh. Not sure if I can alter such thing from my end?

that you can use mousekeys a-la Win9X built-in by setting setxkbmap -option keypad:pointerkeys and activating it with L_Alt+L_Shift+Num Lock.

Not quite sure when would this be useful, given that in Linux you usually either work 100% text mode in a terminal or graphical with a mouse. But hey, it's a possibility.

This does reminds me of my first computer with a PS2 mouse that often failed as Win98 was starting, and usually rendered the whole thing useless.

We need tools to get to the point where they can replace Adobe tools. Open alternatives are great, but they are sadly not there yet to replace Adobe tools for professionals.

And won't be unless projects like @inkscape get enough funding to develop to a point of being viable alternatives.

Yes, it is in no small part about the money.

@rysiek Adobe gets to rank worse than Microsoft in my book in software freedom abuse.

I mean, they rank worse than Microsoft. That's how shit they are.

Easily mounting shares in a distro-agnostic way.

With this solution, I now can add a line to mount the share in my .xinitrc so as to have it done automatically when I log in!

Good thing I had my bootstrap script with me, as now fresh installs take only 10min or so to complete, with just some minor adjustments left to be done on the GUI :D
