Many years ago - when I was very young and you were even younger - it was standard for an ISP to provide all their users with a small amount of webspace. Both Pipex and Demon offered webspace back in 1996. If my hazy memory is correct, they offered a few megabytes - more than […]
So I have a bunch of #selfhosted services running at home. Now, my home #ISP is your typical large Canadian telco (aka assholes) and they are actively sabotaging my host-at home stuff. (i.e. I set it up, it works a few days, then it stops being reachable from outside, at work, rebooting doesn't fix etc.)
Can any recommend a reliable "just works" remoting solution (where the host is linux) where I can always remote in if the host has power and an outbound connection?? (paid is ok)
My #ISP has been cranking up the #network speed recently. Over the past few weeks, my decrepit old #router couldn’t handle it any longer and kept dropping the connection and then resetting. It was very frustrating. Happily, they’ve sent a new one and things are back up and the connection is looking solid again, with the added bonus that the speed is nearly three times as much I had been getting previously.
😞 #Mail#Mailprovider#Cloud#EMail#Postfach#ISP#Mailbox
🆕 blog! “Virgin Media preparing to offer symmetrical upload speeds?”
Virgin Media - a UK-based fibre-optic ISP - recently sent me a survey about their potential product offerings. It was desperate to know if I wanted bundled streaming video (no), or Sky Sports (LOL no), or any other digital subscriptions (no, go away), or a landline (what, is this the 19…
Virgin Media - a UK-based fibre-optic ISP - recently sent me a survey about their potential product offerings. It was desperate to know if I wanted bundled streaming video (no), or Sky Sports (LOL no), or any other digital subscriptions (no, go away), or a landline (what, is this the 1990s?). They even wanted to know if I'd pay extra for priority support.
Here are some of the offerings they proposed. I must not that these are from a market research exercise. Whether they'll ever launch, and whether the prices are accurate, is something we'll have to wait to see.
RIP Kviknet - danmarks mest seriøse internetudbyder med den mest tech-erfarne, hurtige og dygtige support.
De overgår nu til at blive opslugt af EWII - Danmarks måske langsomste og ringeste kundesupport. #RIP#danskertoot#ISP#kviknet#ewii
With the switch to a 1GBps internet line. Also meant I needed to change the infrastructure inside the place from 100base/t to 1000base/t. Now that all the devices on the internal network can access both 1GBps on WiFi as well as while RJ-45. #internet#canada#isp#vmedia
Saw this Xfinity generator to power some neighborhood internet service provider hardware today and started fretting that maybe today's storm is going to be worse than I thought. So far not too windy, though, which is the big power outage risk around here. #ISP#Xfinity#Comcast#broadband#PowerOutage#InternetInfrastructure
Has anyone gone all in on Verizon's 5G home internet service? The clock's started on my 30-day free trial bur I haven't even cracked the box open. I have reservations already and not as much free time to experiment...
The main issue is I've read stories of people like me (who work from home) suffering from intermittent 30-second windows of dropped internet throughout their workdays. I don't have that problem with my current ISP, and I don't know if I want to even bother seeing if I'll have that same issue.
But the price is a bit cheaper and I'm not sacrificing any speed we couldn't live without before (currently paying $60/mo for 500/50, Verizon promises $45/mo for 380/50), and maybe "5G as a path to fiber-like speeds" has come far enough that it's worth it? The theory being it's 380Mbps now, maybe it'll hit 1Gbps at some point?
Anyway I'm hoping someone here can help me understand better what I might be getting myself into if I do try out the service.
any advice on a residential / business #isp with static IP and all ports open for a server in #canada#quebec#montreal? my current provider (oricom) wants me to get a NEQ to get a business package (ugh)
it has been some time since i ran an #isp myself, so i am curious: do today's large volumetric (l2/l3) #ddos attacks still rely on source ip spoofing? have the attempts to implement unicast reverse path forwarding checks got anywhere on a broader scale? #infosec
Not to brag or anything, but I just got native #IPv6 at home. Now I just need to speak to my #ISP to pretty please have them present me a subnetable range so I can avoid having to flatten my home #LAN.
Imagine having a FTTH connection with a huge bandwidth and only CG-NAT without IPv6. It’s just broken #internet right. It feels like having a Tesla shell with a Trabant motor in it… anoying. Do you have any ideas hot to fix this? (besides nagging the ISP for it) #isp#ipv6#ipv4#cgnat#network
Some cybercriminals with [presumably] spoofed IPv4's are trying to #pwnat my @pfSense - box whilst also hammering #telnet.
#ISP#TechSupport is either criminally incompetent or refuses to acknowledge the issue...
And this is why you should alyways block known #Military / #Intelligence networks, because even if they don't target you, cybercriminals will #BGP-hack or #spoof their #IP|s.
