lath,

Think of it like this, we as a civilization stand on the brink of collapse. Can we change it? Yes. Are we trying to? Yes. Is it working? Debatable.

About Lemmy, there’s all kinds of people here. Those with the know-how segregated themselves into particular communities and blocked out all the rest. They’re just quietly doing their thing wherever, with no fucks given about what’s happening outside of that.

Beyond that, in my opinion, are two types of people left to roam the default maelstrom. Those without the know-how and those who thrive in the drama. The former are usually driven out by the dramartists.

I’d see it to be the same as in society. There’s people doing their own thing, trying to be left alone. There’s people just stumbling through life, not knowing what they want or need, nor the means to get them. And then there’s the people who thrive through conflict and making things miserable for everyone else.

Both on Lemmy and in society, guess which ones usually end up in charge…

The answer though is simple. Get involved. Don’t want to deal with the toxic waste? Well tough shit, because the planet’s full of it. We’re at the stage where we all have to clean it up. There’s nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Want to give up and run away? Good luck with that! When there’s no more room left, all that toxicity will just spill all over you, no matter how hard you tried to get away.

As individuals, each of us is a minority. And if we keep running from the issues that plague us as a group, we’ll never be allowed to thrive.

I know most people that were on reddit at the time are fully aware of this and won’t be surprised but don’t dismiss the findings out of hand. It’s important that studies are being conducted and the fact that the finding match our lived experience is still noteworthy.

lath,

People are emotional creatures. And in a place where a type of view is being actively promoted, it’s very easy to align those emotions in that specific direction.

An example here on Lemmy is ACAB. It’s anti-police and it posts the bad stuff that’s meant to show ACAB. They might say it shows the truth and people going through All, watching the videos and reading the articles might start thinking, huh cops seem bad. They keep going, read statistics and articles posted by other commenters and driven by this information, they eventually end up saying ACAB. Suddenly, anyone not saying ACAB is complicit, an enemy, a troll, part of the problem etc.

It’s the same for any politically charged social hub. It’s not just people who had the views but lacked a place to vent them, but people who are ignorant on the subject and are radicalized through emotional outrage. Emotional opinions are the hardest to change because the investment in them is the greatest.

lath,

Their job is to make the sale. Anything beyond that is not their problem.

lath,

Because you’re getting mad at the symptom, not the disease. Without management endorsing it, would sales be doing something like that and still keep their jobs?

lath,

Yes, but how many sales representative can afford to think beyond having their sales numbers up? They might lose their job either way so long term company welfare isn’t really that important to them.

lath,

I want a future where every colour is beautiful. Uniformity is too bland and too susceptible to mass extinction events. Genetic diversity is what ensures our greater chances of survival, so while I welcome ending racism as a concept, i see our common baseline to be as fellow humans.

lath,

An amazing sight i regret not being able to see in person.

lath,

Impossible. We’re much too individualistic not to make a rainbow out of our skin.

How to work with someone that regularly arrives as the wrong answer?

I work with a person that went presented with a problem, works through it and arrives at the wrong solution. When I have them show me the steps they took, it seems like they interpret things incorrectly. This isn’t a language barrier, and it’s not like they aren’t reading what someone wrote....

lath,

Though language is an effective means of communication, it’s not perfect.

To use an example, there was a meme about a literature professor quoting from a book and telling students what the author meant by mentioning the curtains being blue in a scene. As they go on and on about the melancholy and sadness the author was known to experience at the time, Samuel L Jackson busts in through the door and yells “The color was blue because the curtains were blue, motherfucker!”

Or am I remembering it wrong? Anyway, language is open to interpretation and as such, people will interpret it openly.

lath,

Sounds like people should prepare for some vigilantes going all Moby Dick on the orcas.

Maybe Ryan met one of those fabled lonely milfs in his DoorDashing area…

lath,

Nah, it’s fine. We played Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley. We can save them.

lath,

Is this from before Pokemon GO? Or does that have a separate one for public indecency?

It’s like the second coming of Harambe, only the kid is a woman, Harambe is a bear and the guy shooting Harambe is a guy.

I held a baby squirrel today! (lemmy.world)

Story time! We recently bought a rural property with a burnt down house on it and are going up every few weekends to clean it up.
