High-speed design in KiCad is kinda painful, but I will still rather use KiCad than any other commercial EDA package.

My current main sticky point is that I can't (as far as I know) apply different trace profiles based on the layer im on, especially if it's a single net class, this is rough because I need to apply different trace geometry depending on the layer in the stackup I am due to impedance differences

Anyone have any recommendations for fairly long transparent rules with grid markings on them that /don't/ generate a metric asston of static when being used?

I've got one of the westcott brand ones and after using it for like a minute it has a substantial static charge on it :/

am I going to need to make a grounding strap for my damn ruler?

lethalbit,
@lethalbit@chaos.social avatar

I don't have a magnetron sputtering setup so I can't sputter-coat my ruler with a conductive film either :v

I had a sudden burst of brainworms so I plotted the Download size of Xilinx Vivado against it's version, it's gotten thicc

lethalbit,
@lethalbit@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg at least 2, I think it's mostly that the routing databases have just exploded in size due to the Versal and really big Virtex parts.

Plus all the other garbage the bundle in like VItis, etc

Don't mind me, just using the Rds(on) of the PFETs as a current sense shunt resistor :v

lethalbit,
@lethalbit@chaos.social avatar

@thunfisch it is, but you can over-spec the FET to ensure that it won't be too drastic of a change, but as long as range variance isn't too bad and within your measurement tolerance then in theory it's not too bad.

If you really need accuracy you could also put a temperature sensor right near the FET and use that to possibly correct for variance.

shrug

lethalbit,
@lethalbit@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland @thunfisch Oh yeah 100%, I'm likely going to just use normal shunt resistors, but "for the meme" and as a small reminder to myself that I wanted to do this in the first place it's not too bad.

But yeah, lots more to take into account

Time to bring the pain:m:

lethalbit,
@lethalbit@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland Eh, should be fine it's not /that/ bad, plus this is an 8-layer board so shrug

But yeah it's going to be "fun" especially once I get the rest of the nets and stuff all connected and happy :v

I want/need a decent DSO that can do hardware decoding for protocols, but is also just hooked up via USB3 and has a good scripting API.

lethalbit,
@lethalbit@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg In my case, the hardware decoding would let me not worry too much about having to do decoding software side, basically offloading it,

As for USB3 vs Ethernet, it's just in my personal case I only have 1Gbps internally and the 5Gbps of USB3 would be nice, i've found at least with my cheap DS1054 the LXI is just so so so so slow.

but yeah that dreamscope sounds really nice

lethalbit,
@lethalbit@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg Okay true, that's fair,

lethalbit,
@lethalbit@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg Yeah, I've wanted to play with ngscopeclient for a while but my DS1054 is cranky about it, and the (as far as i'm aware) lack or apparent lack of scripting/api support for external tooling is a miss as well.

I could be wrong on both of these aspects, as i've not poked it in a bit but yeah shrug

Anyone remember that/know who it was?

Thinking about if there are any FPGA Accelerated SPICE engines out there and if they would provide any speed improvement at all or if CPU bound simulations are just better overall.
