The new Alien: Romulus trailer channels classic sci-fi horror https://www.theverge.com/24170776/alien-romulus-trailer-release-date

@verge big "Alien: Greatest Hits" vibe here

Furiosa is a leaner, meaner Mad Max story https://www.theverge.com/24161853/furiosa-mad-max-review

Soooo, while I still spend time here on Mastodon, I'm spending more time these days on Bluesky. But, with Bridgy Fed, there is now a bridge of my posts on Bluesky that can appear here as well, for folks interested in hearing me blather on over there...

@mmasnick @mmasnick.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy I know you're big on BSky, and honestly, technically I think it may be preferable to Masto?

where I get hung up is, technical capability aside: it's being run by a for-profit company, and I don't understand how they plan to please their investors. I'm not sure they do either, which doesn't bode well.

(not saying Masto will do great as a non-profit either, mind, but at least it's plain what the plan is)

lewdmachines,

@mmasnick @mmasnick.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy like I think the AT Protocol likely has a future, if not as itself, likely a derivation getting incorporated as something W3C-alike down the line

what I don't foresee is a for-profit corporation, uh, working out in this space with open everything. interest rates and infrastructure/resourcing being what they are and all

they've also got a real uncomfortable policy of "submit all images to Hive for AI training" for image labeling, which.. ain't great

lewdmachines,
@lewdmachines@mastodon.social avatar

@fenarinarsa @mmasnick @mmasnick.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy yeah, I understand the plan.

my impression is quite a lot of people went to BSky as "the new Twitter" and honestly didn't care that much about the federation plans.

do you think those people embrace federation and the move to yet another service provider, or they just give up and go to Threads?

lewdmachines,
@lewdmachines@mastodon.social avatar

@fenarinarsa @mmasnick @mmasnick.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy yeah, I mean, I'm with you.. but BlueSky failing or shittifying as a corp will not be seamless for end users

that'll require new app(s), new site(s) to log into, all kinds of things

.. sort of the same stuff people complained about for Mastodon

I just watched Hackers for the first time, and really wish I hadn't.

Great soundtrack though 👌

lewdmachines,
@lewdmachines@mastodon.social avatar

@robyneatseverything it's not a good film but there's a few things I like about it:

  • as mentioned: that soundtrack!
  • the casting punches above its weight class
  • it was dated and weird even when it came out and it has only become moreso
  • I love that the "hacker aesthetic" looks like they're wearing outfits carefully constructed from things they found on the street
