Caitlin update. After some ridiculous delays, Caitlin’s body is finally leaving Lurie Children’s Hospital and is off to the flameless cremation center. Michael Thomas & I are very much not well. No parent should have to watch their child die, though thank god she wasn’t alone.

Dear Friends and Family of Caitlin:
Caitlin passed away at 1 am this morning in the Lurie Children's Hospital PICU. We never left her side, and she was made comfortable for her last 10 hours. She listened to David Bowie, Neko Case, and the New Pornographers. 1/4

Caitlin remained unresponsive and seizing throughout. (Our Caitlin was already gone before they removed her from the machines.) @lynnemthomas.com and I are as devastated as you might imagine. We’re home now waiting for all of the cremation arrangements to get finalized. 2/4

Caitlin was the best of all of us-- the most pure, loving, fun, and kind person any of us will ever know. She fiercely loved life and the people who loved her. She brought all of us joy, and will be very, very missed. 3/4

Caitlin update. Things are bad. Three more strong seizures this morning with the last one needing her emergency diazepam to stop it. She has spent days sleeping constantly. Desats still happening. We are exhausted and despondent.

Caitlin update. Well, that sucked. Bradycardia in the morning transitioned to over 20 desats yesterday. Caitlin was just not herself. Very tired and distant.

Caitlin update. Day 35 at Lurie in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Today she is getting a massive MRI on her digestive system looking for answers. She will be under anesthetic, so there are notable risks. As always, good thoughts are appreciated.

Caitlin update. She is still in the PICU. There is only minimal progress over the last 3 days, but Caitlin has avoided any new mysteries or problems. I am taking care of Uncanny stuff.

Caitlin update. As her weight is now only a KG up and she is breathing room air, PICU has decided Caitlin is stable enough to go to the acute care floor. The motility is a major issue still, but that will involve GI. So progress, but also a very stressful day.

Caitlin update. Not a great day. Caitlin was throwing up almost constantly for two hours. We are still working on getting the giant fluid overload off of her. We are all tired and fragile.

Update on the CT scan: they have ruled out internal bleeding or missed infections, but we still don’t have answers beyond that.

Caitlin Update. She remains fairly unresponsive. The doctors are stumped and ordered a CT scan. They are looking into a missed infection or possible slow internal bleeding.

Caitlin update. The hypercalcemia won’t budge, so last night she received another infusion of zoledronic acid. Calcium is still up, and now she is in pain. No desats in a bit, but her weight increased again. Things are very much not great. 😔

Things are now worse. Caitlin has thrown up three times this morning. Please send the good thoughts that she isn’t headed towards another aspiration pneumonia.

Caitlin update. Slow but definite progress. She is more alert and even smiled when we put on some Bowie for her. Still in the ICU, though. We are in a place now where we are a bit more comfortable with Lynne going home for the work week.
