Had a very weird first 24 hours back in Europe until I realized (after noticing this for two different kinds of bottles with screw-off plastic caps) that the plastic caps don't detach anymore from the collar. That's new since last year. EU regulation apparently?

madmoose,
@madmoose@mastodon.social avatar

@pervognsen It caused a bit of consternation across Europe, put I haven’t accidentally dropped a bottle lid on the floor since then so I like it 🙂
Welcome to Denmark!

I was curious and looked up what European languages other than Danish use the Latin 'origo' for a coordinate system origin. It seems like it's just the Nordic languages: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/origo#Danish

madmoose,

@pervognsen @thefranke The ur-prefix is sadly not connected to the city of Ur, as I has once hoped.

I would expect to see old- (as in oldnordisk and oldgammel) more than ur- in Danish.

Leaving for the airport in about 12 hours for a long flight to Denmark. Looks like summer has come early there, too.

@pervognsen Have a good flight! The weather is indeed worryingly nice here already. Spring seemed to pass in a week or so.

madmoose,

@pervognsen Sometimes I know there’s a "better" way to write something but I can't remember it exactly, so I write it the “dumb” way on purpose and wait for Clippy to correct me. Usually something involving flat_map or and_then. It's getting less frequent as I learn from Clippy.

Got up at 4:30 AM to travel 3 hours for a client meeting. I like to think of myself as a morning person, but that’s too much morning for me.

@simonbs My sympathies, or alternatively, congratulations, depending on how you feel about two hour Monday morning meetings.

Either way, sounds like somebody’s got a case of the Mondays!

Had some fun prototyping a measuring tape for the Apple Vision Pro today. Now, if just placing objects in a three-dimensional space in the simulator wasn't so damn difficult... 😄

@simonbs Can you make a level line on the wall and give me virtual screw hole markers a set distance apart, and a set distance above the floor? I might buy an AVP for that.🙂

I recently used an AI upscaler to enhance the hairs on a testicle in an egg cup, and if you recall who my target audience of that image is, I'm sure you will agree that this is the only appropriate use of AI.

I applaud whoever named WebKit's "Web Template Framework", because seeing its abbreviation in source code often sets exactly the right mood for the occasion.

@danielpunkass I remember telling Ian Hickson a long time ago that the WhatWG should have been a task force instead of working group. I believe he agreed it was a missed opportunity.

Adopting XcodeGen is one of the best improvements I made to my development workflow in 2023. Maintaining a YAML file like this is much more pleasant than maintaining a near-unmergeable .xcodeproj file, especially when working in a team of developers.

One of the best things I know is when I write code and hours just fly by. I guess it’s what they call "being in the zone." It's not often that it happens anymore, but I appreciate it when it does.

A demonstration of how the Blade Runner videogame (1997) stored each frame of its "3D" models. A very unique vertically stacked slices technique which the engine could draw from any rotation around its vertical axis.

@dosnostalgic I should update it at some point… the code is very hacky and slightly off in the calculations if I recall correctly. Also maybe an explanation of what’s going on 😛

My favorite boss has evidently decided to finally retire because she started a YouTube channel and her opinions in videos are unfiltered (and very well produced). I'm surprised the games and tech media hasn't picked up on it yet (she's high profile) but it must be a matter of time.

I’ve long enjoyed Neil Gaiman’s graphic novels but had neglected his books. while traveling I’ve had a bunch of fragmented downtime with bad connectivity, and read American Gods which is pretty good! didn’t feel startlingly original or anything, but a nice contemporary fantasy

Cryo's Dune displays its text in variable-width fonts with justified text layout. It has two fonts for latin scripts and two for Fremen.

When you choose the Fremen language, Dune just uses the French localization with this custom font 🙂

The fonts are in the resources DNCHAR and DNCHAR2. Each store a table of 256 glyph widths, followed by 128 8x9 glyphs and 128 8x7 glyphs.

(Font extraction has been added to dune-extract)

There's probably no line in any game – indeed, any written media – more deep, powerful, or weighty than the first in-game spoken line from Cryo's Dune:

"I am the Duke Leto Atreides, your father."

The lip sync system isn't hooked up properly yet, but here's all the lip sync frames for your enjoyment.

@whitequark Our cats are fairly skittish and will usually get out of your way, except when they're lying in front of the bathroom door in the middle of the night…

I have fairly good night vision though, and I can see they're staring me down as I try to step over them.

The smarter one is more skittish, the not-as-smart one less so.

I made a quick utility in Rust to extract resources and sprites from Dune's DUNE.DAT: https://github.com/madmoose/dune-extract

The sprites are exported to png with alpha transparency.

I got tired of hacking my engine every time I wanted to inspect something more closely…

Not all the sprite sheets have a palette so some of them will export in grayscale. Also, there's no way to tell if a resource is a sprite sheet. I'll probably include a list.

madmoose, to retrogaming
@madmoose@mastodon.social avatar

It took a while but I finally found where Dune draws the talking heads. This is 9 sprites put together.

The game builds a list of the sprites (still working on how), and if I copy the list from my emulator, “Duke Leto, your father” show's up.

I spent a long time on how the game reads the lip sync data that's in the .voc-files, but Dune completely ignores that when audio is not enabled – and my emulator doesn't have audio yet…

madmoose,
@madmoose@mastodon.social avatar

@foone I can give you all the face sprites for all the portraits and the starting coordinates for Leto's face. What else do you need? All the faces have varying amounts of face parts, so I think they would need separate setups.
