canadian columnists having a normal one

aris_tgd,

@ami_angelwings This really gives weight to my theory that social conservatism is mostly about having boxes to sort stuff into, and feeling confused when things get moved from one box to another or people try to redefine or get rid of the box.

I obsess way too much about the fact that every book is someone's first encounter with an author. So each book needs to be pretty decent.

Bear in mind, my introduction to Heinlein was "The Cat Who Walked Thru Walls" 🤪

aris_tgd,

@charliejane I mean, if you want one of Heinlein's books that is the Most Heinlein, that's one of the ones that is The Most.

Peter S Beagle makes everyone else in fantasy look like chumps. I love how he purposefully uses an utterly generic fantasy setting so he can just leap right into these beautifully drawn strange characters.

aris_tgd,

@ZachWeinersmith I love Beagle but my first defensive reaction was "but there's so much great fantasy out there, what about the new stuff by T. Kingfisher and N. K. Jemisin and Ken Liu and Max Gladstone"?

I guess I just read a lot of authors who are really good (I mean I read smbc don't I har har ;) )

Just for the record, in my opinion it shouldn't be legal for President Biden to order Navy seals to assassinate Donald Trump, and if he did that, I would be OK with him being prosecuted. Trump and I apparently disagree about this, which is weird.

aris_tgd,

@mattblaze To be fair, Trump saying that Biden should be allowed to send the SEALs after him is the least weird part of that argument. Cosplaying that their enemies have vans full of ninja ready to strike has been part of the conservative big man fantasies since before 9/11. It's not surprising that Trump's willingness to pretend that his fantasy world is reality would extend to that.

aris_tgd,

@AnonymooseGuy @mattblaze Trump's willingness to turn the state against people is also a real part of the fascist fantasy that is easier to understand in the abstract.

Just attended a bystander intervention training where the facilitators said that if you see someone practicing anti-Asian hatred in a forum or YouTube comments or on social media or wherever, it's best to intervene only when you know either one or both people in the situation well enough. 1/

aris_tgd,

@trishalynn If it's a public moderated place, I find saying something like "Can the mods clean up the disappointing anti-Asian bigotry in the thread, please?" can show support and also help alert the moderators to the problem if the situation is moving fast

The problem with well-meaning people stepping in on social media is there are so many variables involved that "what is best to do" is going to depend on a lot and maybe can't be covered in a general training

aris_tgd,

@trishalynn For example, I've got a lot of experience listening to transphobic arguments and responding to them so I feel pretty confident saying something in response to a bad argument. But I might not be able to identify the difference between a genuine critique of Chinese foreign policy and Sinophobia in a rapidly moving situation, and jumping in might just make everyone already involved angrier.

i spoke personally with hamish mckenzie last week, and came out of the conversation with very little faith in the company's approach to moderation. i'm glad they caved on this point (or promised to cave?), but i am not optimistic something similar won't happen yet again

aris_tgd,

@molly0xfff I'm glad social pressure managed to make the bare minimum happen! Genuinely sometimes it feels like it never does anything. I'm also glad the migration process to your new system was frictionless on the user experience end.

I hope that the social pressure working gives people who don't have as much technical skill some time to evaluate alternatives and pick a better one.

Y'ALL
you can vote for Biden in the primaries and November and still protest his shitty policies NOW.

corporatist democrats aren't your friends. they're neoliberal machiavellians who sold us out and killed FDRs' New Deal.

https://monthlyreview.org/2001/04/01/neoliberalism-from-reagan-to-clinton/

don't be an ahistoric buffoon screaming "BUT TRUMP IS GONNA WIN".

45+ years of neoliberal Reaganism wouldn't have gotten us here w/o neoliberal democrats' complicity.

so if we have no choice but to vote for corporatists, we MUST protest them 24/7

aris_tgd,

@blogdiva We can also celebrate when he pushes the system left as we yell at the failures of that system. Shit is complex and white supremacy capitalism is only getting taken down with a lot of work.

There are things he has done that are genuine progressive wins and positive feedback helps to make more.

But I agree, protest now too. Don't listen to people who think you can't protest who you vote for. Yelling at their elected officials when they step out of line is why the right used to work.

Really enjoying this background followup to Mighty Car Mods' movie about their 24 hour endurance K Car race team!

@Dani I didn't know you are also into motorsport and/or tiny cars and/or Aussie mechanics!

... Listen I like the accent what can I say

aris_tgd,

@Dani Excellent! I started idly paying attention when Donut Media started their F1 podcast; now that it's over I'm trying to pick up an ironic-to-sincere fandom for Good Smile Racing's Super GT team.

I, uh, already have some merch.

Been having a spate of creative ideas I've been mulling over as I work to get my life moving again.

Top is a series of edutainment experiences teaching fundamentals of science. Think pressure wash sims for science tasks.

(Hahaha do you think I could sell Perkin-Elmer on an equipment technician sim? If I make one of these I should try.)

aris_tgd,

I am very interested in the idea of a low-vision or no-vision rhythm game.

Using haptics and sounds should be enough to give information to the player; it's differentiation and controls that are the question.

Does anyone know a blind rhythm gamer? Are you one? What do you play?

aris_tgd,

Circling back to my rhythm game idea to mention that I very much welcome input from blind people who would like to play rhythm games but find them inaccessible.

If you dance or play music, I think rhythm games can be fun. I'd also like to explore other kinds of rhythm game accessibility like teaching modes, which is another way players might learn a track besides looking at a piano roll on screen.

Call and follow like in square dance or haptics instead of visuals.

I’m watching the special from 1978. I’m sure I saw it when I was a kid. I’m sure this is the first time I’ve seen it since.

I cannot believe how bad it is.

So far it has been mostly Wookiees going mmrgh and gnrggh.

Now I’m watching the VR porn song they gave grampa wookie. Sung by a real singer who has talent. But like, none of this makes any sense.

As my son exclaims “what the heck?” @steggy says “remember how much people did drugs back in the 70s”

aris_tgd,

@blogdiva The Star Wars Holiday Special is about average for late 70s holiday specials, but people forget just how bad late 70s holiday specials were on average

I keep ingesting information about payment processing online and feeling like there must be some kind of way to set up something that gets around some of the enshittification of stuff?

Like, imagine a payment processor that vets all of the people who use it, so if you see "ArtistCash" you know that there is a real human business on the other end and not an Amazon/Alibaba flipper

Who accepts legal sex work by putting in the legwork of compliance instead of trusting reports

aris_tgd,

A payment system which uses funny money (think robux or vbucks) which can be paid to other artists in the ecosystem and only costs money at payout, so low-income artists can support each other on the platform and patrons can take on the burden of processing when they tip in

Payment processing/payout happening on a regular basis (weekly?) and set ups to allow automatic per unit or per time period subscriptions

aris_tgd,

Basically, can we build something with all the good features of Patreon/Twitch/Paypal/SquareBlock

But with fewer of the shitty aspects?

Also can someone else do it I'm busy

I like that I’m into ‘vintage’ hobbies. I love old people in vintage hobbies. It’s like having an elder with good taste guide you.

An old lady gave me her coffee burr grinder before moving to a nursing home. A really old man sold me his Rega Planar 2 record player, with impeccably selected stylus and cartridge and parts. The cameras I buy, mostly from old men and women. I also love talking to old people, so it’s a win!

Not to sound old myself, but ‘they don’t make things like they used to’.

aris_tgd,

@skinnylatte My theory on "they don't make things like they used to" is that we're getting a bit of filtering happening here. Not all stuff in the past was engineered to last, but we have replaced all of the stuff that broke.

That being said, yes, cheering meeting older people and caring for their much loved surviving equipment!

aris_tgd,

@skinnylatte I agree, there is a removal of a whole level of production there from cost cutting. I am not sure if it's a symptom of materials changing, corporate greed, manufacturing being and older industry and owners getting away with more, or what.

Remember when we let one far-right dude make up the whole critical race theory panic, and then reactionaries passed "anti-CRT" laws that were really anti-diversity laws, so that teachers were afraid to even teach about civil rights and the Holocaust, and then US students' knowledge of the Holocaust dropped precipitously? And it dropped the most where those anti-CRT laws were passed?

Well, what if we let the same dude make up a whole plagiarism inquisition against the Harvard president?

aris_tgd,

@timo21 @KrajciTom @Itty53 @venitamathias @mekkaokereke @mmlvx @valthonis Four Directions! They organize Native turnout in US elections and have been super effective. If you want to bulwark Democracy this season, they are worth your attention.

aris_tgd,

@KrajciTom I genuinely don't know.

I do know that they started their efforts in one state and have been moving out one state at a time, so it may have been a matter of resource targeting. But that is sheer speculation from reading posts on the Balloon Juice blog which organizes fundraising drives for them.

My favorite Batman story is the one where people think his alter ego "Matches" Malone is a matchmaker.

Batman has no choice but to go along with it, and discovers that his true talent is in helping people to find love. He is the world's greatest romance detective! 🦇💞
