maikel, to fediverse

Big difference between the and commercial social media:

You can lose your entire social graph and give no fucks about it because as this is made of actual humans and not a majority of bots or spammers you know you'll find (and be found) by everyone again in no time.

Compare that to Twatter. Lose your account and it'll take AGES before you're found again because you'd relay on algorithms instead of humans.

maikel, to random

Right, so you're seeing this and wondering what happened and why are you seeing a new account.

I bricked my fedi.maikel.dev instance of Calckey trying to migrate to Firefish using the obsolete and broken ubuntu.sh script on their repo.

After getting annoyed, I went to sleep, woke up today and tried again but with a fresh install. The script is still pretty much broken even for that so I'm taking charge of my online presence by forking Firefish and ensuring this never happens again, there's plenty in the repo I had already changed on my instance like what comes out when I use a search box.

I've lost ALL of my social graph so lots of people won't even figure out where the F did I go unless you boost this and might think I died 😇. So please, for their sake, do boost: I was before @maikel now I am here in @maikel

Thanks you all for helping.

EDIT: Note that I'm adding some changes to the code so expect my instance today to fall a few times before it runs stable.

maikel,

@konstantin somehow I imagined The Witcher entering another little town, fighting a crazy witch who's gone mental because her husband left her for someone younger and then sitting down and typing Rust code with Roach looking over his shoulder.

maikel,

@konstantin and since he's in the countryside most of the time, he's using a ZX Spectrum 48K to do it, along with a catode-tube vintage old telly.

maikel,

@u0421793 I was pretty sure I wouldn't be the only one fucked.

maikel,

@nanode I know but I just wanted to sleep so I said: fuck it!

terraform destroy --auto-approve

zzzzzZZZZ

It's just thoughts.....lucky me I think every day!

maikel,

@nanode well, that has been called for decades creating a staging environment.

That would have been the right choice if I wanted to keep everything. But is just thoughts....and people that always finds me / I find them easily so why bother.

My thoughts last night were:

Fuck it! Starting anew in 3..2...1..zzzzZZZ

maikel,

@nanode you'll break federation for sure.....

maikel,

@u0421793 @nanode my final problem was CREATE DATABSE whatever whatever WITH ENCODING 'UTF8' broke the ubuntu.sh script.

Which is funny because that "with encoding...." was added as a fix, I guess bugs are called fixes now.

So I did a "CREATE DATABASE blablabla....;" without the "with encoding utf8" and it worked. And that was the final bug before I realised I need to decouple from upstream and code a dropin replacement for the backend :)

maikel,

@nanode @u0421793 you're getting to the point I got last night, I didn't just go to sleep I tried everything for an hour before I furiously gave up.

maikel,

@u0421793 @nanode there's this thing:

pnpm migrateandstart

That thing is what made it MUCH easier to me to figure what was wrong.

maikel,

@u0421793 @nanode Redis is an in-memory DB basically. It's used for caches and sometimes chat messages, and stuff that needs to be retrieved very fast.

maikel,

@u0421793 @nanode

the name has to be redis-server

systemctl status redis-server
maikel,

@u0421793 @nanode stop redis with

systemctl stop redis-server

CHECK your own server redis conf because surely you must have put a password on it. YOu'd see it in .config/default.yaml

Add the passwrd in /etc/redis/redis.conf

Just go to the end and add

requirepass YOURPASSWORD

THEN

systemctl start redis-server

You'll get it done after the 10029th attempt, don't worry, resistance is futile.
