BTW, is the idiom "pound sand" American or British?

ArtBear,

@kotaro
It's American, an older expression, more common mid 20th century at a guess?

Go pound sand.

Go away, go do something pointless, just do whatever it is away from me,

At the end of the day, I believe in people, and in free will. Naivete? Maybe, but the idea that "everyone is awful" just because the folks running our society are definitely awful, does not resonate with me. I'm not looking to lead anyone anywhere, and I don't think it's rational to assume you have all the answers, at every step of the way, and nobody else does.

I take an anarchist approach to everything I do, even teaching; if I arm you with knowledge, you will make better choices on your own.

ArtBear,

@AnarchoNinaWrites
Good thread. In terms of actually doing stuff I find interest in conversations about how we wean people off corporate media, & corporate enshittification social media. It's 1 place to start change.

Platforms & toolsets.
Content & Communities (far more varied).
Outreach & Growth.

ArtBear,

@AnarchoNinaWrites
The other thing I'd love to see is actually using some of the tools of rampant capitalism against itself in a meaningful way.

Consumer pressure. B companies & employee owned companies & collective alternatives.

Hell even a defund-the-fash app. Literally just an app that tries to help busy everyday people easily buy slightly less fascism sponsoring products & services. If it can scan barcodes & or find deals, bonus.

Whatever happened to make mastodon in web browser ignore your preferences and constantly remove the advanced web interface is kinda irritating.

ArtBear,

@bytebro
Cheers, I will try that! Thank you!

Have sent five e-mails this week now in a back and forth about items ordered and whether they are fit for dispatch.

Last week I sent six to follow up on payment being acknowledged, shipping and the delivery address.

I feel guilty for digging my heels in over details, for wanting to know the order status and that items will be shipped in good condition and as advertised.

But it's not wrong to want what you've paid for.

I've almost abandoned all hope of this order not just getting cancelled 🙃

ArtBear,

For certain! I've been repairing a lot of storm damage today, and it's alawys a bit more coplex than it looks at firs assessment, so a lot I wanted to do today gets missed.

ArtBear,

@tokyo_0 Agreed & thanks!

Yall today I saw the first bathtub in the world I do not like.

ArtBear,

@ouinne
Awesome, a functional bath tub.

Totally different reaction here. It's one of the few bathtubs I've seen (that isn't a jacuzi spa hot tub type) that could actually put water on more than just my hips and my feet. ie not pointless.

I might enjoy baths sometimes, but WTAF is the point in the typical short shallow puddle things with knees and body folded up & just feet & hips in water that they put in homes?

At least if you folded yourself in to that some water would actually cover you.

I've decided to live my life as a fatty. Quit restricting my diet. I'm going to be as mobile as possible.

ArtBear,

@kotaro
I agree capability, mobility, stamina, health - are the important bits.

I've lost nearly 50kg from approximately 150kg to 100kg -ish, over an 18 month period. I've also radically changed what I can lift, how hard I can workout and just how many hours I can spend doing physical tasks a week.

ArtBear,

@kotaro
For yourself, take pictures or measurements (not just weight) before you start. Even if it's uncomfortable. It's incredibly motivating for consistency and progress to have that after a while, and if you don't you may regret it later!

I'd like to hear what are some of people's favourite current front ends, whether apps or browser based for the Fedi platforms?

Non-mastodon ones too!

Elk, Icecubes, Tusky, things like that?

I was taking an English lesson on the iOS English conversation app "Speak" a while ago. As I thought, my pronunciation of "L" is not good at all. No matter how many times I speak into the microphone, the AI always recognizes it as "ruh. I always put my tongue on the roof of my mouth and push it forward to speak, but it doesn't work. Too bad.

ArtBear,

@kotaro The linguistics thing that babies who dont hear certain speech components, phoenemes etc when first learning languge will always find it harder to identify & copy correct pronunciation

English babies not exposed to rolling Rs will have trouble with distinguishing & reproducing for example. African languages with glottal stops, clicks etc are v hard when not native. Japanese that develop language without hearing European Ls feel same trouble of it not being a native component sound iirc

ArtBear,

@kotaro
Here's how I do it.
No teeth!
Move tip of your tongue back from teeth, across the flat palate to the ridge where roof of your mouth curves up.
Push the tip of your tongue into that ridge/slope, little bit of pressure so it curls very slightly. Just the tip though not whole width of tongue.
If you flick your tongue tip forward so it uncurls you will already without adding breath produce a very faint L sound.
Add breath in the same way as an R sound, but with that little flick forward =L

ArtBear,

@kotaro it's not physiology, babies developing language in a locale with the linguistic sound components included in use can do the components easily. Second generation kids everywhere show that.

In understanding primitive capitalism and property rights, the fact that "no monopoly can lead to no money transactions" is fundamental. We tend to make the mistake of thinking that people will pay for any worthwhile product, service, or data, which, in my opinion, is a troubling delusion.

ArtBear,

@kotaro
Much of what is going wrong with societies can be partially attributed to people not wanting to pay for quality investigative journalism that holds power to account.

We've got the website back up and running on the newer version of Mastodon. I'm just updating the content processing now and then I'll get the other web server updated so we have our scale and resiliency back online.

Anyone have any thoughts about selling a lot of art design reference etc books in the UK?

I have stacks and stacks of mint condition & quite beautiful art, design, architecture, various reference books. Is anyone managing to sell books these days?

Individual sales via ebay or whatever would take too long, be too much work packaging and sending individual books I think. Some kind of bulk sale would be better.

ArtBear, (edited )

Anyone have any thoughts about selling a film/tv collection in UK?

I have a lot of 4Ks, blu rays and DVDs, physical movies & tv shows on disc. I could ship them, but also if I can get some cash for them that isn't ridiculously low that would be an option.

I'm guessing here, but over a thousand discs?

Some of it will be rare stuff that streams nowhere eg .

ArtBear,

@driusan
considering all the options at the moment. Bulk sales, ideally. Maybe consignment or auction.

ArtBear,

@UkeleleEric
Thanks useful perspective.
