I asked ChatGPT to generate C code to covert a string to base64. Who can spot the vulnerability?

(Posted this on LinkedIn but still nobody has found it yet).

malwaretech,

@cafechatnoir Sometimes you can ask ChatGPT to find the vulnerability and it can, but in this specific case it couldn't unless explicitly told what it is and why.

That clip of Biden supporters drownings out protestors calling for a Gaza ceasefire by chanting "4 more years" is some pretty dystopian shit. Between that and Pelosi claiming everyone is a Russian plant, it feel like the options for 2024 are literally just gonna be MAGA or MAGA lite.

malwaretech,

Would be cool if there were an option for "I'm tired of the housing crisis and bombing the middle east"

malwaretech,

@paul_ipv6 Best I can do is bomb iraq

It's extremely funny to see US senators parroting the conspiracy that the Chinese version of TikTok only promotes positive & educational content whereas the US version is addictive and harmful.

The conspiracy comes from the fact that the Chinese version of TikTok has a mandatory "kids mode" enforced for anyone under 14, which imposes time limits and content restrictions, as a result of strong regulatory pressure from the Chinese government.

Like twice a year US congress makes the TikTok CEO fly in from Singapore so they can yell at him and ask why the Chinese version of TikTok (Which he has nothing to do with) is regulated, whereas the US version is not, as if congress isn't entirely responsible for making said regulations, but were instead too busy eating lead paint and being xenophobic.

malwaretech,

Literally in one part of the hearing a congressperson basically ask Mark Zuckerberg why big tech companies don't just regulate themselves so the government doesn't have to. Like...what? How the hell did the dumbest people on earth end up in charge of a world superpower?

I hate that I'm now a frequent user of ChatGPT. It's not that it's good, it's just that Google has become so unbelievably useless that it's near impossible to get usable results. It's like they've reverted to pure keyword based search. I just get results that (sometimes) contain my search terms, but not relevant to the context of my search.

malwaretech,

Like, I really don't want to talk to a machine pretending to be a human, I just want contextual search. Unfortunately, everyone is high af from huffing the AI lead paint, so it's the only way to get a usable product.

malwaretech,

@drfancypantsesq Others where never good to begin with, only Google.

  • malwaretech,

@GossiTheDog It's so dumb. You get to pick which cult you want to be a part of and the options are basically just "drive off a cliff at full speed" or "drive off a cliff while abiding by the legal speed limit"

Why is it so hard to find friends in the US who can afford to do fun things during the weekday and actually want to? Everyone either has a full time job, or has the financial freedom to do whatever they want and then 'whatever they want' just constitutes spending every waking hour trying to make even more money.

Like, I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna be on my deathbed telling my family that my greatest regret in life is not having more money to die with...

    malwaretech,

TikTok is adding a feature that will make every video shopping by using AI to recognize objects and allow you to shop for similar things on TikTok Shop.

This will further the current sense that every TikTok video is now trying to sell you something.

    malwaretech,

@carnage4life The Chinese version of TikTok has has had this for a while. It's similar to how Pinterest and Google Reverse Image Search work.

I actually still can't get over how amazing LA is. The average winter temperature here is close to the average summer temperature where I'm from. It's January and I'm spending most days at the beach surfing the big winter swells, whereas in England I'd have had to decide if it's worth struggling to put on a 3ft thick wetsuit to survive the 8c/45f sea temperature.

    malwaretech,

@shadows_killer Not sure I agree on the food. LA you can find some of the best food from any country on earth.

When the Director of CSIS calls for kinetic responses to cyberattacks, we should all sit up and take note. We should also all be very concerned. The proposed rules of engagement in this article include:

The United States can and will use all elements of state power to effectively defend the homeland against any threat, in any domain. The Department of Defense stated a version of this policy in the context of integrated deterrence, but it is worth a high-level official saying it again. The official should point out that U.S. policy refuses to target civilian critical infrastructure, so a proportional response to a cyberattack on our critical infrastructure would be serious and likely include economic or military measures.

The article directly calls out the challenges of attribution and understanding of intent, but defaults to a retaliatory stance for reasons that are, in my opinion, deeply hypothetical—especially the hand-wavy claim that "AI" is going to make these threats more dangerous. There is absolutely no evidence for that claim.

The cyberwar might be here, but every day the intelligence community and military make de-escalatory choices about how to respond to these attacks. I contend we're better off for them doing so.

    www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-united-states-needs-a-new-way-to-think-about-cyber

    malwaretech,

@mttaggart Oh, that makes total sense. It was giving me a slight banging the war drums kind of vibe.

    malwaretech,

@bontchev @mttaggart WannaCry did cause billions in damages and still didn't result in a kinetic response. Also I can assure you the kind of attribution they are doing before a serious response is not "oh look, it came from a computer in China".

    malwaretech,

@bontchev @mttaggart But yeah, I get your fear. With US politics moving to the extreme, there is a future risk of public/congressional pressure to do something extremely stupid, but I don't think any cyber policies are saving us from that one, sadly.

    malwaretech,

@mttaggart @bontchev The closest I could think of would be the drone strike against that 21 year old British hacker who joined ISIS, but it could be argued the decision was made due to his perceived rank within the organization and not the hacking.

    malwaretech,

@AAKL @mttaggart It's like witnessing someone robbing a bank and assuming the robber was actually there to assassinate the teller at the explicit direction of Vladimir Putin.

    malwaretech,

@bontchev @mttaggart I don't think NotPetya was cyber criminals, I think it was directly deployed by RU intelligence, they only tried to make it look like Petya so it'd just seem like ransomware gone wrong.

    malwaretech,

@bontchev @mttaggart You're assuming that all intel operators are A tier, and that they're trying their best to hide. This was during a time when Russia was sending operatives into Ukraine to stir up trouble and having them "disguise" themselves by removing the name badges on their standard issue RU military uniforms.
