Only Bad Options (Jennifer Estep) 6/10
Book 1/?

This is a weird one. At its core it's a mismatched couple romance, set in space. But I'm not sure why it's set in space at all, because everyone in the book has magical powers, and it's the magic that's central, not the technology.

There is some political court intrigue, but again, it feels more appropriate for a fantasy setting.

I probably won't continue with the series.

Dare to Know (James Kennedy) 6/10

This is either a 4/10 or an 8/10 and since I can't figure out which I'm splitting the difference.

Told in first person, this is a story of the midlife crisis of a man whose profession is predicting the precise time of death for clients.

The entire book comes off dark, grimy, and more than a little incoherent/trippy. It's on purpose, but is very jarring.

I either liked it a lot or kinda hated it. I'm not sure which.

mapodofu,

@weebdeluxe @bookstodon I read that one last year. Very much enjoyed it from what I remember.

Sign Here (Claudia Lux) 9.5/10

An intersecting story set half in the present day, and half in an eternal Hell.

Hell in this world is darkly corporate, with the damned working their way up to eventually be able to sign away the souls of the living (after being tortured for near eternity). The two main damned souls are a lot of fun.

The other half of the book is a tense family drama with a super-dark twist.

A very unique book - sharp, intense, and human.

No Time Like the Past (Jodi Taylor) 7/10
Book 5/14

Don't get me wrong - I love the Chronicles of St. Mary's series, but this is probably the weakest entry so far, and hopefully not a sign of things to come.

The romp through time felt a little samey, and the overall plot arch really didn't advance much when compared to the previous four books. Ditto for character growth.

Even when mailing it in, Taylor's prose is still a lot of fun.

You wouldn't

mapodofu,

@MnemosyneSinger I absolutely would. Posts like this hurt and don't help. They seek to punish, not educate.

There are better ways to promote what you're attempting to promote.

(Before you jump all over me: yes, I alt-text somewhere close to 100% of the images I post, even when it's a pain in the butt.... because it's the decent thing to do.)

I took Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun for a spin today, and wow - what a blast from the past!

I played the absolute heck out of Doom, Quake, Heretic, and all of those 1990's FPS shooters, and this game is a loving throwback to that time & place.

The piles of gibs everywhere as you blast your way through Chaos Marines & Heretics are simply glorious nonsense.

I'll be playing through the entire game for sure!

My pile of shame is so out of control right now that I've paused all of my holds at the library until September. It usually takes me 10-14 days per book, so I know this is not enough.

@golgaloth Not sure if any of these authors are on Mastodon. I know @marthawells, @ann_leckie and @catvalente all are. Love their novels too!

mapodofu, to android

I'm looking for #Android game recommendations.

No gatcha games, and no games with energy systems, or similar pay-to-grind mechanics.

Happy to pay for quality.

Typically I like: card games, rpgs, strategy games, builder games.

Not really big into frenetic action games or platformers on my phone, mostly because they all control like ass in my experience.

Light from Uncommon Stars (Ryka Aoki) 10/10

A devastatingly poignant and wholly unique book that I'm going to struggle to describe, but will try anyways.

The premise and characters are absurdist (a donut lady/starship captain, the queen of hell, etc) but the execution is raw and beautiful.

The plot orbits around a runaway trans girl, Katrina, who escapes her abusive family only to fall into the orbit of the queen of hell.

🧵 1/3

mapodofu,

The characters absolutely shine in Light from Uncommon Stars.

Each is broken in their own way, but throughout the novel grow and morph in often surprising ways, and redeem each other even as they try to figure out how to navigate a bigoted, racist, transphobic world than feels a little too real most of the time.

The attached paragraph is brutal, but doesn't feel at all out of place in 2023.

🧵 2/3

mapodofu,

The entire novel was flavoured with a very Asian aesthetic that was really great to see represented, especially as a member of a family that cuts across three distinct families (Canadian / Chinese / Vietnamese).

I loved reading about all of the food, customs, and themes that are important to my family in a way that was not simply window dressing.

All in all, Light from Uncommon Stars was a masterful read, and as it wound down I was truly sad to leave the characters behind.

DoctorLURK, to MagicTheGathering

One thing I've noticed since restarting #MTGArena is that some players seem to drag their feet really hard during the first few turns, only playing when their fuse timer is nearly depleted. It's pretty vexing because once you show them that you aren't just going to quit, then they start playing more attentively, but it can take upwards of five minutes to get through the dead time. Does anyone know why people do this, especially in unranked modes? I get gambling on an opponent's impatience if there's a ranked win at stake, but not for a friendly game.

mapodofu,

@DoctorLURK I haven't run into this yet, but it sounds REALLY fustrating.

Hi folks
With all the new folks signing to, remember that your server admins are volunteers and hosting isn't cheap.
If you're on mstdn.social like me, @stux is your admin and has links to help support the server. If $1 a month sounds fair, there's even a convenient Patreon so you don't have to think about it anymore

mapodofu,

@Artemis201 I'll be doing this today as well for my instance. Have already contacted the admin to figure out their preferred payment method (they offer multiple).

We're deep enough into #MTGLTR that I'm going to start my #CommonOfTheDay series for the draft format.

First up we have Rally at the Hornburg, which has the 2nd highest GIHWR (62.3%) on https://17lands.com and the best OHWR (62.6%) but is only being taken as the 11th best common.

The red "make 2 1/1's for 2" card is always playable, and giving them haste in a set that rewards low power creatures is bonkers.

This card does it all, and an easy P1P1.

zenzen, to RedditMigration

Hi! I jumped ship following the #redditmigration lol so I guess here’s my #introduction. Currently a music composition graduate student, just trying cool new (to me) styles of music. I’ve got a pretty wide variety of nerdy interests like #dnd #anime #videogames (#FFXIV and #TOTK are my comfort games right now) and #magicthegathering.

mapodofu,

@yaitorr @zenzen Oh hey, thanks! =)

I'm mostly a limited player (draft). But if you're into Magic, follow the hashtags #mtg and #MagicTheGathering. =) Lots of cool folks here, and more arriving today, it seems. Welcome!

What's the best Mastodon #Android client these days?

Back in the initial #TwitterMigration last November I paid for FediLabs.... but things have (likely??) come a long way.

Fedilabs has felt stale, and hasn't improved since then... plus the notifications don't work well.

Help me find a new Mastodon app!!

An updated #introduction since there are loads of new people today....

In order of importance this is me:

  • I'm an adoptive father of a dynamic teenager, who keeps me on my toes. I have a lovely wife, one #cat, and one #dog.
  • I work in the #software industry, and oversee 70-some excellent developers and development managers.
  • My main hobbies are #ultimatefrisbee, reading (primarily #scifi #books), playing #MagicTheGathering, and playing Final Fantasy XIV (#ffxiv).

The Magic:The Gathering Community on Mastodon really needs to pick a hashtag to stick to so we all can follow it. #mtg #magicthegathering #magic

mapodofu,

@Dunstable @DerMolly @pharmacistjudge Follow #mtg and #MagicTheGathering and you get most of the posts you want.

And then make some clever filters to block all the American politics associated with MTG the politician, unless that happens to be your jam.

yaitorr, to fantasy

Last time I asked for #recommendation the results were amazing so here goes another: looking for chapter books for 5-8yo kiddos!

My kid doesn’t read yet but we certainly have a good time when I read them out loud. So far we’ve read the following:

  • Roald Dahl: Witches, James and the Giant Peach (ongoing), and Charlie and the Choco Factory (lined up)

  • Harry Potter’s Year One: we have two and three but I’m leaving those for later. Probably after she turns 8 or so (she’s 5 now)

  • The Little Prince

Genre-wise, we’ve read #Fiction and #Fantasy but anything different would also be great. I’m up for anything that could continue to nurture interest in reading, empathy, wonder, and a good moral compass.

Even Though I Knew the End (CL Polk) 10/10

This is an astonishingly beautiful novella, set in a 1930's Chicago that has mystical elements hiding in plain sight.

One part sapphic romance, another part supernatural sleuth story, and another "it's complicated" family drama, I simply couldn't put this 130 page book down once I got going.

Darkness is explored - both of the human variety and the demonic - but the entire piece ultimately glows with hope.

MTG3K, to MagicTheGathering

Is it too late to say that The Ring Tempts You is incredibly strong and has no drawbacks? No? Good.

#MagicTheGathering #MTGLRD

mapodofu,

@Sliver_Rider In draft it's nearly the best thing to do for sure. It adds so much consistency to your deck. The first person to get ring level 2 feels heavily favoured. And Ring level 4 is broken.

It's weird design given the lore around the ring.... how are there no drawbacks at all?!

mapodofu, to MagicTheGathering

I have three more deck skeletons for #MTGLTR draft ready to go, but before I post them, a comment:

This set is giving me heavy Zendikar Rising vibes, which is not a good thing.

ZNR was an on-rails draft experience where the draft archetypes were too strictly defined, and there was very little bleed through them.

LTR has similarly strict archetypes, and I'm not finding many generically good or flexible commons as I go through.

I'm worried.

#MagicTheGathering #mtg #mtga #mtglimited

mapodofu,

@BoofTroupe Depends on the cube and my comfort level with it. The more I know the cube, the more likely I am to soft force an archetype that I want to play that draft.

For arena cubes I'll start off watching signals a lot, and moving into open lanes. But once I know the archetypes, I'll look at P1P1, see a card that goes in a deck, and then soft force that deck.
