Filling out the form to renew my passport. They ask for "The date your most recent passport book was issued"

guess what info's NOT in your passport?

🤦‍♀️ how the eff would I know it expired 14 years ago?!

[edit: apparently it is their but their graphic design is crap and made me think it was the date of expiry. Apparently mine expired 4 years ago, which makes a LOT more sense]

are you saying that she thought that the original, with like ink signature and notary seals and such would somehow reconstitute it out the other end, like Star Trek fashion? Or did they not actually CARE about "original" and a copy of it via the fax machine was fine?

I'm kinda surprised you didn't just fax them and let them assume it's somehow magically the original.

So um, if the person is filling out a name change form, do they put the current LEGAL name of the person OR the old name that's being changed?

I assume old name, but that's ALSO a false statement on something I'm about to sign, & have notarized as being a TRUE statement, because it's NOT that person's name.

@Yuki @actuallyautistic yes, and no. There have been so many forms that I have struggled with that my allistic wife has been able to patiently explain what I needed to enter in the field without any real difficulty.

of course, part of the problem is that my brain gets wrapped up in indignant rage at the mind-numbing idiocy and falsehoods that are been forced upon me.

“That’s not what that means! If i answer what they asked i’ll be screwed, but that can’t possibly be what is intended!!!” Etc.

In 1990 Megadeth released an album entitled Rust In Peace.

On it was a song 1 minute and 51 seconds long called Dawn Patrol which was very explicitly warning about the effects of global warming.

It was SO in the public consciousness back then that a fucking heavy metal band sung about it.

Since then politicians have made impossible promises about future dates, and just kept kicking the can down the road until it was far too late.

I am outside with all of the beasts again. Not because I particularly want to be - although it is an absolutely gorgeous day.

No. I am out here because the fluffy cat likes to sit on @dachary ‘s desk, drive her buggy, and prevent her from doing work.

This is literally the only thing we have found that gets the cat to leave her alone and not come back two minutes later.

The black and white dog helps keep an eye on her too. She is currently grazing off-camera

I noticed the cat just sitting there enjoying herself, and leaned forward to take a picture. Black-and-white dog noticed my interest and ran over to make sure she was being good.

I can’t find a manual for this thing and as result am unable to tell if it is broken, or if I’m just an idiot.

There are four LED lights. They are off if the solar panels are not receiving sun. They are all lit if it is. if you give it a teeny sliver of ambient light, one will blink. There are no buttons. There appears to be no reset switch.

I hadn’t tried plugging it into something while it was charging. THEN they indicate they’re receiving power AND the 4 indicator LEDs drop to 1. They instantly jump to 4 after unplugging.

I think the battery just can’t hold a charge any more.

I am cooking dinner. I have reached the portion of the recipe where it tells me to “bring the mixture to a boil”.

The photo shows the mixture. It is a pan of solids. Outside of extreme physics experiments, it is never going to boil.

I have reread the instructions multiple times, and nowhere in the ingredients or the instructions have I been instructed to add any liquid whatsoever. The prior step was to drain the grease and thus remove the only liquid.

I hate recipes.

The next instruction was to add tortilla strips cover and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes until the tortilla strips soften.

I have no idea what the fuck that means because they were soft to begin with. They are tortilla strips tortillas. Tortillas are soft by definition.

I think what they actually mean is “until they become partially soggy” but without any additional guidance that still some questions

My father spent almost his entire life running & quality checking garment factories. Even with all the knowledge I gained from our many conversations about clothing manufacture, I can not explain to you how any sane person would assert that these shorts even remotely an appropriate fit for my body.

I measured myself. I CAREFULLY read their sizing chart, and THIS is what I was sent.

i'm also just ridiculously pissed because i could try on things like this if people would fucking wear masks, but no.

In the US this year alone, COVID has killed ~30,000 people, and hospitalized hundreds of thousands. And 1 in 10 people who get it to ANY degree end up with Long Covid.... but "there's no need to mask. " Even the effing hospital staff isn't masking with sick people coughing all around them.

Like humans crows are conscious, sentient, tool-building communal creatures capable of complex problem solving, and abstract ideas which they pass on to their community as well as future generations.

Like humans they have a penchant for holding grudges against individuals they don't like.

UNlike humans crows don't start wars, commit genocide, or exclude community members for the gender of the crow/person they're attracted to.

Next up on Govt. agencies not knowing wtf they're talking about. Requesting a certified copy of a court doc from MA. There's a field for "Case name".

Guess what doesn't exist on the original OR on the online version (yes i used find). "case name" There's a docket number. There's a case number. there's no Case Name.

In the exceedingly improbable chance that there's a JavaScript developer looking for an interesting open source problem. I just filed a bug in re how it counts the characters in URLs. Sounds simple but HOW we incorporate that into chunking of long texts is interesting.

Back in 1992 & 1996 Ross Perot was a billionaire who wanted to be president.

A large part of his pitch while raising interest was "i'm a billionaire. I don't need to court rich people & be beholden to them, or raise money from everyday people so i won't."

I keep thinking about his campaign vs the Cheeto's.

The Cheeto was like "i'm so rich! I'm amazingly filthy rich! I need you to give me many millions for my election campaign!"
