I'm seriously thinking about quitting Duolingo, because the more advanced the conjugations get the less clue i have what the fuck is going on because they literally Never explain Anything.

Ex. In "el" means "from" & "de" means "of"

I came FROM the United States
Mi venis EL Usono.

The House OF Usher
La domo DE Usher.

and yet, it's insisting that when you go FROM France to Germany it's

...DE Francio al Germanio

and that EL Franco is definitely wrong.

WHY?!

As long as I am unemployed, I am trying to be a good house spouse.

The thing is, we long ago determined that am incapable of cooking or preparing food without making a mess. It doesn’t matter how hard I try.

That’s just frustrating. Frustrating to try and be clean, but then make the mess anyways. Frustrating to have to clean it up afterwards.

If we were rich, we would 100% hire a personal chef.

Do any of you know of a package that lets me use slack / mastodon style emoji insertion?

Between Mastodon & Rocket (awesome macOS app) I keep starting to type : foo : instead of going to M-x insert-char

Obviously we can't just use : foo : because programming languages use colons all the time, but surely there's something similar we can do like !: foo :! or whatever.

🤔 I can't remember a language that combines colons and bangs.

I've just pushed a bunch of changes for screen readers to the main branch of FediThready. ( It makes long texts into post sized chunks)

I've run through it with and it seems ok. HOWEVER it all feels like it's "usable" instead of "good".

If there's a geek out there who uses screen readers regularly I would REALLY appreciate some suggestions on how to make this actually feel good for folks who rely on screen readers.

Ted is a snapping turtle and a “threatened” species. We have friends who love turtles and we’re like “You must protect!”

@james was commenting about accessibility on various OSs.

I had a LOT of discussions with Apple's accessibility folks when I worked there. I have nothing but respect for them and their skills.

BUT at the end of the day I'm not sure how much it matters because

  • they can recommend whatever they want, but no-one has to listen
  • I saw no evidence of people writing internal tools ever asking them for advice (or following it if they did)

holy 💩! DAYS after updating the "Social Preview" for - at least 3 - GitHub FINALLY started serving up the image instead of the default stuff.

BUT I made a "it works just give it time" post with a link, only MINUTES after having it work in a DM, and guess what? IT'S NOT WORKING... but ..it is... sometimes?

I dunno what's going on with this.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@jwarlander I linked to a specific line of code in a DM and it worked. Then I linked to the repo and it didn't. I force refreshed. Nothing.

Same browser. Minutes apart.

So ... maybe but also it feels like there's something else at play here.

Well 💩
I just learned that Peru 🇵🇪 signed a law last month that classifies people as mentally ill, despite lots of societal support for them.

Guess we can cross Peru off of the countries USians can flee to in November (if the cheeto gets reelected).

Last night i left a little rant about how 's lack of explanations for anything made it impossible to derive when or why you'd use some observable rules AND that it made it impossible to know if it the sentence was correct or an AI generated fuck-up.

It was Perfect fodder for "reply guys", but instead 2 folks showed why i love They stepped up helped. One dug out a helpful link, another explained things in detail that took time.

Thanks Esperanto folks. 🙇‍♀️

Someone mentioned being at a friends house & their watch warning them about loud env (>90dB) from friends dogs barking.

This is my life 2x a day. Our young dog CAN NOT CONTAIN HIMSELF as I prepare their meal. It takes like 3 mins to prepare. 🤦‍♀️😿 We've been trying to quiet this behavior for 3 years.

Unfortunately, I'm @actuallyautistic & that constant high stimulus first thing in the morning WILL send me into autistic shutdown.

I've taken to wearing shooting muffs.

Welcome to !

You may not know this, but in 2022 the largest survey of transgender Americans happened, and in February of 2024 the early report was released!

So let’s take a look at THE 2022 US TRANS SURVEY RESULTS, part 1 (of 2)!

@tillybridges i'd be willing to bet good money that the 23% who reported they didn't know if they were intersex were also autistic, because everyone else just assumes they're not until proven otherwise , but an autistic person would answer directly with their known truth, which is usually "how would I know? I haven't been genetically tested or had my internal organs checked out"

masukomi, to transgender
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

#Transgender folks:
Do ANY of you have experience with gender stuff via Dartmoth Hitchcock hospitals in #NewHampshire or know someone who has?

Because they literally refuse to give me ANY information that isn't on their web site without a referral. Like not even "we require 2 letters"

Obviously I'm not going to ask for a referral to a place that refuses to answer ANY questions and whom I may not even meet the basic requirements of.

Minor Update re the tool I've been working on for a friend for whom Apple's palm rejection absolutely refuses to work.

We've prototyped the cover + hole shape over the trackpad & it got a 👍. Now I've gone back and added 4mm thick leather wrist wrests & there's an internal cable run for charging the trackpad.

the lighter colored "wood" in the picture is a magnetically attached plate that we can swap out if he / anyone else needs a different hole shape.

I can't get excited about this Kickstarter update at all, because it 100% feels like

We got sick of sitting around for years while Backerkit took all the money we left on the table.

So, we copied all their stuff.

the thing about better surveys is just fucking insulting, because that's been a major problem for creators for years & they just KEPT ignoring it despite it being pretty damn easy to fix.

TIL you can set a "Social preview" for your repo.

It's under settings, and setting one should make the preview of your repo not be completely useless when you link to it on sites like this.

Let's try it out...

[edit...uh. I'm just seeing the normal default preview. Please fill in poll in reply]

I am a naturally loud person. Not just volume, though, I am usually either talking to myself, to the dogs, singing something, or having echolalia with a nearby appliance.

On the occasions where I become aware of the fact that I am currently being loud my mind always harkens back to a moment in The Crying Game where Forest Whitaker is telling the story of the scorpion and the frog. The last line is “I can’t hept it. It’s in my nature.”

I hate the standard stair-step look of a angled surface. Watching a "Need it Make It" video triggered an idea.

By making the surface a shallow sine-wave we can introduce a wavy pattern in something that still looks & feels like a "flat" angled plane.

Second image shows the dimensions I found most visually appealing.

a screenshot of a sketch of the sine-wave. It is 4mm wide & 0.3mm high. That's it.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

i should note that the angle of your inclined plane plays into the look a lot. As with the stair-step look, the more shallow the angle the farther the waves will be spread from each other.

I would suggest that you're probably going to have a lot more value from playing with the width of the sine wave than the height.

If the sine waves get much taller than this, the eye starts noticing the ridges more than the pattern.
