A little over a week ago I put my Filament Stackers up for sale on @cults3d & Printables. I'm happy to report a handful of sales 😄

Following @dachary 's morning discovery of the impending enshittification of 1Password I'm giving ProtonPass https://proton.me/pass a test run, because they've always had a great reputation.

1st observation: No VC, 10 years of community supported development!! They definitely could have had investment by now if they wanted it. So Values Alignment ✅

BUT... how hard will it be to migrate > 1,500 items from 1P?

I need shorts. Target suggested these as an option.

Just... no for SO many reasons.

I have avoided shorts for years, but if I'm going to keep overheating like this (evidence suggests yes) I'm going to need some.

Looking through the options I realize i have NO clue what would look good on me, but I'm pretty sure it's "not these" ;)

I'm seriously thinking about quitting Duolingo, because the more advanced the conjugations get the less clue i have what the fuck is going on because they literally Never explain Anything.

Ex. In "el" means "from" & "de" means "of"

I came FROM the United States
Mi venis EL Usono.

The House OF Usher
La domo DE Usher.

and yet, it's insisting that when you go FROM France to Germany it's

...DE Francio al Germanio

and that EL Franco is definitely wrong.

WHY?!

These drives are spinning platters that have served us well for almost 41,000 hours of use, so I can't really blame them for having a hard time.

Can any of you hardware geeks tell me how worried I should be? This is a configured as a Synology Hybrid Raid https://kb.synology.com/en-br/DSM/tutorial/What_is_Synology_Hybrid_RAID_SHR

I guess i've got some research to do today
@dachary

EDIT: Replacement Drives ordered. Thanks for the feedback.

As long as I am unemployed, I am trying to be a good house spouse.

The thing is, we long ago determined that am incapable of cooking or preparing food without making a mess. It doesn’t matter how hard I try.

That’s just frustrating. Frustrating to try and be clean, but then make the mess anyways. Frustrating to have to clean it up afterwards.

If we were rich, we would 100% hire a personal chef.

Audible started allowing “AI” generated audiobooks ( > 40,000 so far ) but provides no mechanism to filter them out.

Voice actors bring stories to life. Computer voices destroy emotional moments and massacre the sentiment with which phrases are expressed.

This is absolutely terrible

Well, I think I have found out why the sizing chart suggested that I - a 35DD - should order a 40A.

Technically, this elastic can stretch to the 36 inch circumference that it claims. However, that is 8.5” (21.5cm) beyond its starting point!

What the actual fuck⁉️ Why would you do this to a person? This thing is SO tight! If I gained even a hint of weight and tried to wear this for a day, I’d have to go to the ER.

I will never buy this brand (Auden) again.

I get that came out before emoji, but they've had A LOT of time to create mechanisms for dealing with them... and haven't.

I say this because 👼💩 is it hard to do a simple thing like make a regexp that can match a series of characters, some of which are emoji. That is to say, something that SHOULD look like this

/[.?⁉️❗❓"]/

I'm not not precisely sure what a functional version of that is, but I'm VERY confident that it involves a metric boatload of 🐄💩

@iamada Tooted a bit ago about troubles getting their developers to contribute to a changelog.

I used to be a release manager at one co. I know the pain well, and i have a LOT of thoughts on it.

The short answer is that as much as we wish they would update one with / for each PR they wont, and if you're talking about literally editing a CHANGELOG file then you DEFINITELY do NOT want them to try.

Some positive news in the land of Bureaucracy.

Changing the gender on your license in Vermont is just a matter of filling out the form!

That seemed too easy so I kept digging and found a queer & trans support place and they're like "nope. No proof needed"

🤯 I… I… I could just go full "F"⁉️

a screenshot from a VT Pride center document saying: Changing Gender Marker at the DMV: Vermont DMV allows the choice of M, F, or X as a gender marker, which you can self-select; you no longer need to present a letter from a physician or any other documentation to change your gender with the DMV.

It turns out that there's enough solar activity to take a 2nd crack at the tonight.

However, we're covered in clouds, and would have to drive 8hours - not counting stops - in order to get to a potentially cloud-free area that's at a higher latitude.

Unfortunately, I've been tired all day, desperately need a nap, and am the only one comfortable driving our ~12,000lb (5,400kg) 🚑 because it's effing wide & wifey hasn't practiced in it yet. But she's also pooped so. 🤷‍♀️

TIL about the concept of an "approximate theory".

An approximate theory is one which works, until you look into it too deeply.

It's like flat earth theory. It's plausible (to anyone who never traveled). It can be incredibly convincing. It is "good enough" for most people's needs. It just falls apart the moment you actually start to apply real scientific study to it.

This has a lot of implications in everyday life. For example...

@bardi has recently released Tusks. it's an iPhone & mac app for posting, and managing your threads.

https://thirdculture.app/tusks

Right now you can pay $5 to get a lifetime license. You should do this. It's not much, and I want this app to succeed. I want to stop poking my decidedly inferior web based tool for this. ;)

HOWEVER there's a GLARING limitation that I'm hoping 🤞 that us giving him money will help address. You can only get photos via the Photos App. So, adding a screenshot is a pain.

Why is it that when I type “thanks” the phone suggests the “praying hands” emoji 🙏 instead of the bowing emoji 🙇‍♀️

Living in the United States, where my phones software was written, I have literally never encountered a human being who did the praying hands gesture when they said thank you. I don’t think I’ve even seen it on TV or movies. However, I have seen Japanese people bow.

A) why?

B) is there a culture that actually does 🙏 when they say thank you, and if so, what is it?

Once upon a time Quark Express was the "king" of professional page layout apps & Photoshop the king of image editing. Then at a conference (MacWorld?), Quark introduced the most incredible "photoshop killer" anyone had seen. It had non-destructive editing with unlimited instant undo, on hardware that's laughably slow by today's standards. The live demo was AMAZING and had a crowd all day long.

And then, it disappeared & never came to market.

What as it called & what happened to it?

In ~10 minutes the only electrician who bothered to return our phone calls will be arriving, after
about 6 months of waiting.

I have to make a choice:

  1. "femme it up" in hopes of increasing my meager chances of passing.
  2. "butch it up" and go through multiple days of trauma as he works on our house.

I'm choosing 1, because "fuck you this is my house". Unfortunately tradespeople have a tendency to be extra trump-loving around here. So, this'll be trauma no matter what.

Yay.

I reached out to the folks who bought my filament stackers on Printables & one of them was like "actually it's too big for my printer". I hadn't specified the dimensions initially.

After a little back and forth the's got a Prusa MK4 which apparently has a max of 210mm in one dimension!

Spools are 200mm! So, now I've modeled one with 3mm walls 🙀 which can't be printed with a 0.6mm nozzle, & has NO space for infill, & teeeny front alignment pins. 😢

I sat down to my computer this morning around 7:30 or so. Dr. asked me to look at 2 providers & tell them which I wanted a referral to.

Since then I've

  • found a potentially significant security bug in Firefox
  • switched back to Vivaldi
  • read Tampermonkey Docs
  • installed a WebDav server on our Synology
  • assigned a domain name to an IP in our Unifi
  • failed to do the same in NextDNS
  • called a game warden
  • made dog food
  • called to have our septic tank emptied
  • NOT done what I sat down to

This morning i asked wifey to take a pic as i carried the cat around while my tea steeped (as is her want).

The photo clearly shows a big cat. My mind refuses to to accept that my cat is a big cat.

Last year someone convinced ChatGPT to make a thing. I've taken than, fixed ChatGPT's stupidity, added some quality of life features, renamed it and am gradually iterating on it as I use it.

I've called it FediThready to separate it from the original "ooh AI" project and because it's a silly name that makes me smile.

"you have passed the test with flying colors"

Makes NO fucking sense. To fly your colors is to present yourself with your unfurled flag (your "true colors"). Which is related to how pirates would NOT show their colors to trick people into letting them get too close. OR how you could fly false colors to pass where you weren't allowed.

So, You have [done x] with flying colors means.... "You did X and claimed to be someone while doing it!" WHich is... uhh... ok?
