i found a controller named <CoName>RuportController

I thought it was a typo.

Nope.

> Ruby Reports (Ruport) is an extensible reporting system.

Dear developers. Please stop.

I get why you come up with things like this, and it is kinda humorous, BUT you've gotta think about what it looks like in other codebases.

why would any normal person NOT think that was a typo if they hadn't used Ruport before?

What's that website called where people make cute small sites on subdomains?

@powersource I honestly can't tell if you're joking or if you're just failed to be specific enough to narrow down your request to an answerable quantity of results.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@rtn @powersource wait... neocities is toxic tone or i was?

neocities never seemed particularly toxic.

And there was nothing toxic or negative in my statement. Anything toxic was inserted by the reader.

I simply conveyed that i didn't know how to address the statement because it was ambiguous. Please read the words actually written without inserting your own hidden meanings. Having to deal with other people's BS toxic insertions and assumptions makes life miserable for us autistic folks.

    Keynote is over and i'm honestly unsure how to feel.

    looks amazing, and really looks like something new.

    • i think the price is a terrible choice that will seriously hamper adoption (should have taken a hit on it)
    • I don't know how they expect anyone to develop great immersive experiences if they have to wait a year. Do you... Use a oculus as a test device?
    • They're going to get ripped to shreds on the creepy time-lagged eyes & the uncanny valley avatar.

    As someone with astigmatism I'm assuming i won't be able to use without the optical inserts, which will, of course, be non-refundable even if gives me motion sickness, and you know they're going to be $$$

    I’m seeing people smack-talk Apple’s newly-announced Journal, and a lot of gratitude-related jokes.
    Journal has the possibility to be an amazing accessibility tool. Pulling in the day’s data without having to remember it all - that’s a big deal for some with cognitive disabilities, including brain fog. I hope developers jump on the Suggestions API.

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    @alexisw ADHD means i forget the vast majority of "you remember when we went and did...." events my wife and friends mention.

    tools like these help me to remember ... life. "Moments" type suggestions would be great.

    Why should I switch to ZSH from BASH on MacOS?

    Why not?

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    @funkatron

    ZSH because future Macs will come with a current version and you won’t have to custom install anything.

    HOWEVER if you are going to switch but not particularly compelled to stick with bash-like things, my vote it’s for Fish Shell

    literally every week i receive 1-2 phishing attempts by our system that tries to teach users to not click on bad things.

    The result is that i not only never trust ANY emails from ANY of the tools we use but i ALSO never read them.

    which is to say, alert-fatigue resulting in "i'll never know if there's actually a problem. "

    @mcc re your recent linux config woes.

    I'm appreciative of you sharing them because it helps me know that linux has not progressed to the stage of "just working without geeky mucking about” yet. I keep hoping that has, and then trying and discovering it hasn't or seeing things like your posts.

    geeks As i sat down to work this morning, preparing to give my daily standup, i switch to look at "Work" content and 💥

    after much investigation i discovered that re-using a Pygments renderer in Redcarpet is dangerous and will eventually cause something in the underlying c libraries to go 💥 and take down your app. You can not catch this exception.

    the 💥 does NOT seem to be related to the content of the thing you're rendering.

    Solved with doing this every time:

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    my unverified theory is that some prior rendering set up some bad state in the c lib's memory, which didn't make it go 💥 but DID make it so that some future rendering, or maybe combination of renderings, would cause it to eventually go 💥

    I don't have enough details to file a bug.

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    @randomgeek yup. i suspect everyone hitting this eventually figures this out, works around it, and doesn't bother to figure out the underlying bug because we've got better things to be working on. ;)

    WebDevs... has anyone made the equivalent of Sparkle for webapps?

    I'd think enterprise apps would need this. If your webapp app is installed behind someone's firewall, how does it find out that updates are available? How does it install them?

    I'm just hoping everyone isn't still homebrewing their own solutions.

    Had a sad realization the other day.

    I love occasionally explaining repeating tasks in pseudo . E.g.

    1. do x.
    2. do y
    3. GOTO 1

    No-one learns basic anymore. Most folks can follow what i've said but they don't actually know why i said GOTO. and they don't know why that really would have been written 10, 20, 30 instead of 1, 2, 3.

    geeks. Need your 🧠 for a sec joining modern ruby:

    with pry i could use ~/.pryrc to have custom functions autoloaded.

    I can't find the "debug" (rdbg) equivalent. When i put ruby code in ~/.rdgbrc or ~/.rdgbrc.rb it complains with

    "unexpected end-of-input, expecting `then' or ';' or '\n'"

    which makes me think it's expecting bash syntax which is... WTF?! Also, i can find NO documentation on what anyone is expecting to be in this file or how we're expecting to do the ~/.pryrc equivalent.

    1.0 has been announced
    Ferret is a proxy that sits between your drivers & a db converting mongo queries into postgres SQL and using PG for the persistence.

    https://www.ferretdb.io/

    I am finding myself at a complete loss as to any practical reason why someone would want to use this. The ONLY case i can make for it is that it satisfies people who are zealous about open source licenses and aren't happy with Mongo's.

    What am i missing?

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    @hobs Ferret would make SO much more sense if they'd just pitch it that way, but they're pitching it as "hey this is a great choice to develop apps with" and... I just don't buy that.

    as a very focused niche "help me escape mongo with minimal work" tool it looks incredibly valuable.

    Just because software is free doesn’t mean you shouldn’t support it financially if you can. Until we achieve utopia, money still powers life.

    Go find an open source project you like and use a lot and donate to it, if you have the means.

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    @cda if you don't have the $ means, donate time. Make detailed bug reports that get to the root of the problem. Add clarification to documentation. Contribute fixes and features if you can. Every little bit helps. Saving the devs time is, in many cases, better than $.
