The problem with being an old‡ woman (re)starting their transition is that there are so many fucking beautiful young(ish) trans women posting selfies and I'm like "fuck. like ... that's not even 'goals' because there's no way in HELL i'll EVER look that good unless I can get a brain transplant. "

But also, god DAMN does it make me happy to see them getting to be beautiful and happy.

‡ old relatively speaking.

@bardi 's Tusks app is nice, but it's still early days.

I tried making my thread in FediThready because i prefer the way it chooses to chunk up long posts - and lets me control that if i want to - as well as how it lets me review the full thread.

However, FediThready can't post & doing a long thread 1-by-1 with the Mastodon UI is... "sub-optimal"

SO I used FediThready to make & review the thread & Tusks to post it. It worked quite well.

Full disclosure: I discovered a bug in FediThready. I'm guessing there's something I didn't account for in the updated Regexp that finds split points. Might be related to all-caps words, but I'm not sure. I'll look into it Monday if i remember, but if you're an interested JS geek looking for a small Open Source task to help with... I'm happy to have external contributions https://github.com/masukomi/fedithready/issues/3

Keep in mind that any day, Elon could wake up and say "To Hell with Starlink. Shut it down!" And nobody could stop him.

@lauren 🤔 you don't think there's something in the contract that gave them government funding that says "you gotta keep giving us access for N years?"

I mean, he's rich enough that the fine is irrelevant to him, and no-one who works there would stop him because he'd fire them so....

Is there any point in making a contract with a billionaire if there's no meaningful penalty that could be applied to prevent them from ignoring it once they have your money?

@iamada Tooted a bit ago about troubles getting their developers to contribute to a changelog.

I used to be a release manager at one co. I know the pain well, and i have a LOT of thoughts on it.

The short answer is that as much as we wish they would update one with / for each PR they wont, and if you're talking about literally editing a CHANGELOG file then you DEFINITELY do NOT want them to try.
🧵1/7

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

the naïve approach of "just add your changelog message to the bottom of the file" will end with yelling and / or tears because of the CONSTANT merge conflicts it'll generate. It's just not practically possible. Don't go there.

BUT there are multiple bigger problems with developers making changelog entries, even if you had a technically feasible mechanism.
🧵2/7

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

First, they're thinking at the wrong level of abstraction. They rarely have the skill / experience to consider what they did in code, and reframe it in such a way that the person who needs to read the changelog has the right level of detail & terminology. You'll get a changelog, but the stakeholders and/or customers who would benefit from reading a good one will either find it gibberish OR statements about code that they understand but without the context to make it meaningful.
🧵3/7

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

Second, in some cases there needs to be 1 changelog for internal stakeholders and a completely different changelog for customers. Again, each one needs a different level of abstraction because they are working from different contexts.
🧵4/7

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

Third, tooling:
You NEVER want autogenerated chaneglogs (blog post why: https://weblog.masukomi.org/2016/06/30/why-you-cant-auto-generate-your-changelog/ )

If you decided to use ANY Of the tools that have been written (i even made one) that allow developers to record an entry for a changelog that is also somehow tied to the PR you will have a fucking mutiny over getting them to adopt it into their workflow.
🧵5/7

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

AND even if your team is like the unique magical unicorn capable of understand the value of the task, you've still got the abstraction problem.

My best advice for addressing this problem is to (with their input) modify the template you're using for PR descriptions to have a heading that says something like "At a high level, describe what you did in 1 or 2 sentences" followed by whatever details are needed for the other geeks to understand & review the PR.

T
🧵6/7

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

THEN you, the release manager, or anyone on the team who can put themselves in the reader's shoes... sits down, goes through all the PRs in the release, and rewrites all the geeky sentences into something that's more concise and conveys the right level of info for the reader.

It turns out that there's enough solar activity to take a 2nd crack at the tonight.

However, we're covered in clouds, and would have to drive 8hours - not counting stops - in order to get to a potentially cloud-free area that's at a higher latitude.

Unfortunately, I've been tired all day, desperately need a nap, and am the only one comfortable driving our ~12,000lb (5,400kg) 🚑 because it's effing wide & wifey hasn't practiced in it yet. But she's also pooped so. 🤷‍♀️

Seeing the eclipse tonight might be possible if we could cross the Canadian border but our passports are expired. We'll be sending them in for renewal next week though so, SOON we shall be able to revisit Canada. 🇨🇦

We rarely went there, but I did appreciate having it as an option.

I accidentally clicked the poll thing & can't make it go away. So, uh... do you have a valid passport?

Some positive news in the land of Bureaucracy.

Changing the gender on your license in Vermont is just a matter of filling out the form!

That seemed too easy so I kept digging and found a queer & trans support place and they're like "nope. No proof needed"

🤯 I… I… I could just go full "F"⁉️

a screenshot from a VT Pride center document saying: Changing Gender Marker at the DMV: Vermont DMV allows the choice of M, F, or X as a gender marker, which you can self-select; you no longer need to present a letter from a physician or any other documentation to change your gender with the DMV.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT! YOU CAN JUST CHANGE YOUR GENDER ON THE US PASSPORT WITHOUT "PROOF" TOO!!! HOLY SHIT!

I CAN BE "F" ON ALL THE DOCUMENTS!!!!

AND THE Social Security Administration ⁉️

😭 😂

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

for context re the complete freak-out.

This was definitely NOT the case the last time I went down this rabbit hole. There was no "X" option in ANY state, and the ONLY way to change M to F or vice-versa was to have gone through Gender Reassignment Surgery (then it was Sex Reassignment Surgery) and have a doctor's letter attesting to this fact.

I know we're falling into a fascist hell state, but holy shit… I wanna cry this is so amazing.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

OMG. IT GETS BETTER!
My Birth Certificiate is from a state that allows you to just fill out a form and “If NOT using a court order, self-attest to change the sex listed on the birth
certificate, “To match the sex specified on my birth certificate to reflect my gender
identity, and not for any fraudulent purposes.” “

I can do ALLLLLLLLL the records!

alas, I know a pre-op trans person in MA and they DO require surgery to change their Birth Certificates, but - oddly - not their liceneses.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@bumpus I just need to renew my passport which is pretty easy apparently. So, 🎉

And yes, i went down this rabbit hole specifically because of November & the potential killing of all gender affirming things & the possible need to exit the country quickly. (uuugh)

Also, love that you helped your kid get an X. ❤️
