my steam deck ended up getting some fractures in the plastic. To Valve's credit they offered to repair it for free.

Unfortunately, it took a month for them to replace the back panel. I think it's due to needing a new mold and run of them made due to weak structural issues. I can see the new one has additional support around the screw areas in the mold.

The also replaced the audio board without me mentioning that it was faulty before (had a ground loop), and I fixed it myself. My repair was invisible unless they took it out and looked at it under a microscope. The new version is also a new revision with the faulty component of the previous one replaced.

That leaves me pretty confident that the Steam Deck Limited Edition had systemic issues with the back cover and the original audio boards. I'm glad they made it right, but it's still not great.

another way to consider "optics" is to use another common term for it, "gaze". That helps frame the discussion around whose gaze we are talking about.

"Optics don't matter" is admittedly kind of reductive. We don't want to perform things that knowingly will hurt our friends for example. But, "the male gaze doesn't matter", "the white gaze doesn't matter", "the cis gaze doesn't matter", "the owning class gaze doesn't matter", etc are all totally reasonable framings in various situations.

This is what people usually are referring to when they say "optics don't matter". They are saying you are making an appeal to an oppressive gaze.

why do so many people want a digital assistant? I don't get the desire.

I want programs to execute instructions that I input. I don't want a drunk robot that makes Bender look like a savant babysit me as I float through the world in a bubble.

This is probably the closest I've come to eating the forbidden sachets. Fortunately, I translated the fine print on the back, but even then it was not immediately obvious 😅

The back of the ratchet. The small section at the bottom left translates to "do not eat"

one of the big changes in US society during my lifetime was the added regulation to tobacco and the reducing of regulations for cannabis.

It started with the war on drugs, DARE, mass incarceration, and getting chased by cops after we smoked awful weed out of soda cans in the park, and a lot of people smoked, ash trays in every home, smoking section at Wendy's, and more.

Now they are nearly at just about one regulatory step a part. In the next 5 years I could easily see cigarettes being harder to get than a joint.

"I supported them before, but I just can't get behind this new action..."

No, you never supported them or their cause. That requires material action. Patting yourself on the back in your mind theater does not put you on the right side of history.

I thought that the new Beyonce album was pretty good and the new Swift album was definitely not for me.

If people like them, love them, hate them, or don't care, then that's cool. Art is subjective to taste.

The plethora of articles that are opinion pieces with headlines like "why I changed my tune on the new Swift/Beyonce album" seem like stealth advertising though.

Today, artists get paid per stream, and even getting a new burst of listens for 1 more listen in the numbers that these two artists get generates a ton of money.

ActivityPub activities with TTLs. After so many hops they die

I suppose I could just auto-delete them after a number of API queries from unique instances. Boosting only so many hops would be kind of cool though.

A bunch of companies are actively looking at the protests at Google, then looking at student protests and worrying that such protests might spread to their offices.

They are already developing insider threat risk assessments. I would not be surprised at all if we see a further chilling of expression at the workplace, and likely retaliation against employees who speak up in their private lives as well. If you haven't seen a message from HR about "professional conduct regarding divisive issues" yet, then I bet you will soon.

I hope you have a union. If not, you might want to start on that today.

@foolishowl that interview goes into "at-will" employment. Honestly, I think this is a lesson that US workers know too well. Compliance in our personal lives is already demanded lest we end up on the streets.

To your point, now is a good time for organized worker power to start taking a stand on this issue as it might actually be able to stand against this latest wave of speech chilling. And, I think, workers need to start thinking about the next wave and the next wave, because capitalists won't stop until we have absolutely no liberty outside of their cages at all.

Awhile back I met my ex-girlfriend's dad and we started talking about what was possibly our only shared passion, country music

I made some crack about how a lot of my friends were train hopping country musicians and he got real uncomfy. Like. "Whoa I don't know any of those fringes-of-society people"

It was like. What fringes of society? My grandpa hopped trains and so did Jimmie Rodgers. Where I come from, this is just wholesome Americana.

rose,
@rose@503junk.house avatar

@sidereal talking about my past experiences train hopping and dumpster diving are tidbits I like to drop in conversations with normies to test out their ideological constructs. Those seem to be better litmus tests for the values people have than any culture war argument of the day.

OK, so Sam Kerr, superstar footballer and Aboriginal Australian badass lesbian heroine, was charged in the UK with “racially aggravated harassment of a police officer”, which had everyone scratching their heads concerned for a few days

Then it came out that all she did (for better or worse) was call a cop a “stupid white bastard”, which is of course a completely regular and good thing to call a cop, and now she is even more beloved in Australia and beyond
